SEAL Wolf Undercover Released Today!

SEAL Wolf Undercover Available Now!
No wolf is safe in USA Today bestseller Terry Spear’s new installment of the SEAL Wolf series.
Never be so foolish as to fall for the enemy…
Special wolf agent Jillian Matthews has joined the jaguar-run United Shifter Force to track down a deadly criminal. She’s even willing to work with PI Vaughn Greystroke―until the hot, growly SEAL wolf makes the mistake of getting in her way. Naturally, she shoots him. Who could blame her?
Vaughn Greystroke has always worked alone. But when a string of attempted murders puts him in the crosshairs, teaming up with the Shifter Force begins to sound like a good idea. Even if he has to work with alluring―and potentially treacherous―Jillian Matthews. Vaughn is a trained SEAL, after all. He can surely keep his distance from Jillian…no matter how much she’s getting under his skin.
It all began with SEAL Hunter in To Tempt the Wolf!–Just think: Naked wolf on beach during a storm–beautiful woman who takes him in–what could be better? Except he doesn’t even remember who he is.

Excerpt from SEAL Wolf Undercover by Terry Spear

Jillian couldn’t believe that a lupus garou could be trying to kill her brother. The wolf chasing Miles had to be a shifter. She knew he wasn’t running with Miles for fun. Not with the way her brother had howled, calling to her for help. If the other wolf had been in trouble too, he would have howled along with her brother No, he’d been hell bent on Miles’s trail. Worse, she worried he could be the wolf who had nearly killed Douglas.
She ran through the woods to track where the wounded wolf had gone once he’d finally veered from her brother’s path. Wild wolves had been sighted in Oregon, so at first she’d thought it might have claimed the territory and was chasing Miles out of the area, or worse, planned to kill him. When she couldn’t scare him off with the first three rounds she’d fired, she was certain he was a shifter. She found drops of blood collected on vegetation, the light rain already diluting it, and followed them to the river where the trail ended.
In the misty rain, she glanced in the direction the river was flowing, and thought she saw a wolf’s head bobbing up and down in the water. She couldn’t be certain, considering the conditions: the water was dark, the object was far away, and the day was overcast.
She continued to watch until whatever it was disappeared beyond a bend in the river. Her heart pounding, she ran in the direction of her cabin, hoping her brother was there and could tell her what was going on. If she didn’t need to hang onto her rifle and cell phone, she would have shifted and run as a wolf. Much faster that way.
She was glad the wolf was no longer chasing her brother, but she did hate that she’d had to shoot him. With their shifter ability to heal faster than humans, he would be fine in no time.
As soon as the cabin came into view, she hurried to the front door, unlocked it, and called out to her brother. He didn’t respond, and she didn’t hear him in the back bedroom. She stalked back to the room, but he wasn’t there. Why wouldn’t he have come here? Unless he was afraid of bringing the big, bad wolf to their doorstep.
For now, she had other business to take care of. She left a message for her brother, telling him to call her at once, that she was working with some jaguar shifters. And that Douglas was in dire straits after someone attacked him. She would be staying at the red wolf pack’s ranch part of the time. She considered trying to track down her brother as a wolf, but with the other wolf wounded and leaving this area, she figured Miles would be okay for now.
Teaming up with jaguars was something totally new for her. Never in a million years would she have believed she’d be working with a combined force of jaguar shifters and a wolf; and with another, if they could solicit his help. On the way over to her cabin, Leidolf had informed her about a hardcore Navy SEAL, also turned PI —and from what she’d read about his profile, a loner in his investigative work—who was in the area and was also investigating the attack on Douglas. From a photo Leidolf had sent to the team, he was one hot looking specimen of a wolf and single, though she just happened to notice that information by chance. And he looked a hell of a lot like the guy she’d seen at the Kitty Cat Club in San Diego. The good Samaritan. That meant he had been a wolf all along. She should have known.
She quickly packed a bag and left to join the shifters at the cabin nearby to meet up with the SEAL wolf, hoping she’d hear from her brother soon. She also put in a call to Leidolf for an update on Douglas’s condition.
***
Vaughn bobbed up and down in the icy water, thankful his wolf’s double coat protected him from the chilling cold. He had to take care of his wound first, hoping it wasn’t too bad and he would heal quickly enough. He was certain the gray wolf couldn’t have suddenly armed himself with a rifle, so he was still running as a wolf, and that meant Vaughn could try to find his scent again. What if he had an accomplice? Maybe that’s why he howled. To get help from a wolf shifter friend or pack member who would shoot Vaughn instead of coming to his aid as a wolf. The shooter wouldn’t have been some random hunter then. A marksman lying in wait while Vaughn tried to take down the wolf seemed too damned convenient to be mere coincidence.
***
Okay, so how did I come up with this idea? I wanted to include jaguars and wolves in this venture–and a hot SEAL wolf. That was it. At the end of the previous jaguar book, A Very Jaguar Christmas, I had mentioned trouble in Portland, Oregon, where a red wolf pack lives. I hadn’t mentioned them in a long time, so I wanted to set the story there. And I wanted to have jaguars causing trouble for wolves. I wanted an exciting beginning–but I wanted it to be sexy. But it had to include both jaguars and wolves. But it also had to focus on the romance between one couple. And it had to have shifting. And romance. And conflict.
I’d watched a show about treasure hunters stealing from each other in deep sea dives. The wolf series is so long running, that every one of them has to be different from the rest, and I’d never had a treasure hunting story before. So after much writing and rewriting, I finally decided to make treasure hunting at the root of it.
And that’s how I came up with SEAL Wolf Undercover!

Have a happy, non-conflict-filled day!!!

Do You Multi-Task???

SEALWolfHunting_catalog
I am. Okay, today, I’ve got to start proofing the final copy of SEAL Wolf Hunting. Don’t you love this cover? Besides the guy, I LOVE the wolf. Since I write about wolves, as  in werewolves, but they’re so human and so wolf-like that it seems sacrilegious to call them werewolves–as in a horror version of them, I love to see a beautiful wolf on the cover taking up center stage too. Why? Because the man is not just a man, but a wolf. I love this time with the book–it’s nearly done–just checking to make sure there are no other mistakes, but there are so few, that it’s a time for me to have that one last read that’s more for pleasure than anything, before you get it!

So that’s one of my number one priorities. I also want to continue to work on bears. I finished two last night. I finished making a 3rd, but still need to embroider the paws. :)

Plum large bear (393x640)
Plum bear with plum faux suede paws, 19″
Purple Bear (557x640)
Purple Bear with faux suede paws, 10 1/2″

And I want to get my word count in on She-Wolf. 2500 words a day. I need to be at 8500 today. I’m at 7200 right now. So moving right along. Usually when I get in edits, I have to quit everything and concentrate on only the edits. Then I’m playing a horrible game of catch up. So I’m trying to work on my blogs, word count, then proofing, then bears so I don’t get behind on anything. :)

It’s kind of like playing an RPG, role-playing game. I’m playing Dragon Age: Inquisition for my break time at night once I have all my other stuff done. Yesterday, besides word count, I was critiquing 10 chapters of a critique partner’s book, and while I was playing the game, I was finishing up the bears. Now, I also have to constantly stop to take puppies out, to play with them, cuddle with them, train them, feed them. So I do have other stuff going on. But in the RPG–there’s always a decision to make. Do I concentrate on the Big Boss, the guy with all the strength that is really, really hard to kill, and then work on his minions after he’s dead? Or do I tackle everyone at once? Then once the little guys are dead, I can use all my strength against the big guy?

Well, oftentimes I’ll go after the big guy while the little guys are beating at me too. And when I’m working on my projects, often I’ll tackle the one that needs to be done first–just all day long for every day that it takes to get it done. Then my stack of things to do goes down a little before it goes up a lot again.

So this is kind of a new experiment for me. Working on all things–having a goal for each, and getting each of them done, and not just working on one big project. I think it’s working, so far, because I think when I do just one major thing, I tend to take breaks anyway, and I don’t get as much done. Time will tell.

I want to get half of the proof book done today, and the other half tomorrow. That’s my goal. I need to start sewing up the other bears–4 of them, so another goal. And word count on She-Wolf.
Other than that, that’s it! :)

When you have jobs to tackle, do you go after the tough ones first, or the little ones until you’re ready to tackle the big one? I do that with first line edits. The simple stuff first. Then I tackle the bigger issues. :) When I see a page of issues, I want to reduce the number quickly. Then it doesn’t seem like so much.

Have a terrific Saturday and hope all your issues are little ones. The Big Bosses can be a real chore to deal with.

Guest--Angela Campbell & Book Giveaway

I’m pleased to introduce Angela Campbell, a fellow Carina Press author. Her debut novel Cry Wolf comes out on Halloween. What an awesome release date, huh?

Thanks for stopping by Angela! Tell us a little about yourself.

Thanks for having me here today! In a nutshell, I’m just your typical lifelong reader who always wanted to cross that bridge and become an author herself. For my day job, I’m a newspaper journalist, but I’ve been writing fiction in my spare time for as long as I can remember. No husband. No kids. Just me and one very spoiled cat who surely thinks I’m crazy because I’m always pitching my story ideas to her for practice.

*I have two very spoiled cats and two kids. My cats interrupt me more from my writing than my kids can. My kids don’t sit on top of my laptop for attention. LOL.*

Now give us the dets on Cry Wolf. (I, for one, have been waiting for this one to come out. I love the concept! Can’t wait to read it!)

Thanks! “Cry Wolf” is a contemporary romance that has some suspense and paranormal elements to the story. It’s about a tabloid journalist, Andrea Lockhart, who gets assigned to investigate a series of “werewolf” sightings in a small South Carolina town. Unfortunately, the town’s newspaper editor, Sean Hunter, is her former college nemesis, which irritates her to no end. Sparks fly when they reluctantly team up to report on the sightings. He’s open to the idea folks are seeing something, but she’s convinced it’s all nothing more than a hoax. These two can’t seem to agree on anything – except for the fact they can barely keep their hands off each other.

*I’m going to say it again. I can’t wait for this to come out! And what a perfect read for Halloween!*

What/who inspired the story?

A real urban legend in Wisconsin called the Beast of Bray Road gave me the basic idea for the story, and of course, the fact that I was a huge fan of “The X-Files” at the time probably contributed something to it as well. I really wanted to do something different with the werewolf romance genre, and well, hopefully I succeeded.

*Oh!!! I’m going to have to look up that urban legend. I’ve never heard of it.*

What are a few favorite lines from the book?

I think the opening line is my favorite because it pretty much sums up my heroine’s state of mind throughout the first half of the book: “How in the hell do I get myself into situations like this?"

*LOL. Great line and says so much!*

Tell us about the day you got the call from Angela James.

I was actually on vacation in New York City (my first ever visit there). My niece and I were rushing through Times Square to make it to our tour time at the NBC Studio when I realized I had a missed call. I listened to Angela’s message and practically bounced the rest of the way to Rockefeller Center. I was a basketcase until I was able to check my e-mail and verify that Carina Press really did want to publish my story. Getting that call in NYC made an already exciting trip even more memorable. Nothing could bring me down after that.

*What an awesome call story!*

So whatchaya working on next?

I’ll soon start the second book in a planned trilogy. It’s a paranormal romance about – I just couldn’t seem to help myself – werewolves. And I’m getting a little crazy with my own worldbuilding.

*I feel you on that. Can’t wait for those to come out!*

Let’s get to know Angela the person

Favorite TV show?

At the moment, it’s a toss up between “Castle” and “Supernatural”

*Never seen Supernatural, but Castle? Ohmygod! Don’t you just want to take Castle home and do dirty things with him? I love that man.*

Favorite Vampire? (I have a hard time answering this question, lol)

I’m a HUGE fan of vampires, but I’m going to have to go with a classic, Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, simply because I’m such a huge fan of the horror films from the 30s and 40s and that poor guy never gets his due. He started it all, after all.

*And paved the way to so many more wonderful vampire stories.*

Favorite book?

Ack! Just one? There’s no way….

*Tee-hee. Yeah tough question*

Dream hotty?

Jensen Ackles. I’ve lusted after him since he was on “Days of Our Lives.” I’m a bit peeved he’s become so popular on “Supernatural” because it means I have to share him with millions of other fangirls now.

*I’ve never heard of this guy, but *eyes bulge* um…yum.*

Hobbies?

I love movies and dabble in filmmaking on the side. I’ve worked as a production assistant on such shows as “Bridezillas” and a few short films. I’m also a major comic book geek.

*Holy crap! Really?!?! Bridezillas is one of my train-wreck weaknesses that I love to watch. Those women are awful!*

Day job?

Newspaper reporter, but please don’t hold it against me!

*LOL. No grudge held.*

Thanks so much for stopping by, Angela! It was great having you here.

Thank you!

One lucky commenter will win a copy of Cry Wolf. So start commenting!

Heroes in the Dating Game & 3-D Character Online Workshop

What does a hero need to do to garnish the heroine's attention?
Smile...talk to her about what she finds interesting. Approach her with confidence but not too quickly. Lean in and act interested, but back off if she leans away, her space invaded. Ask her for a date for something she expressed an interest in. Keep eye contact, listen, and lighten the tone of conversation. Be positive and fun.

Sound like a hero? Nope. LOL Sounds like the dating game. So what's wrong with the hero in this scenario? For fiction, NOT real life, the woman wants to be pursued, sought after, approached quickly, not left to linger, and often the conversation is confrontational and not sweet and light. There's no fun in reading about that.

:) So for dating tips, these are great ideas! For writers, forget it. We have to have conflict between the hero and heroine! That's what makes fiction fun to read. I think of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Lots of conflict, lots of fun, and lots of sexy make-ups afterwards. :) For fiction, sure it's great. But marriage? Nah.

So what do you think? Do heroes in real life and heroes in our stories have double standards?

What a Character!!! Jump from Cookie Cutter to Great 3-Dimensional Characters in Your Writing!
How many times have you heard how important it is to have 3-dimensional characters? That the publisher wants character-driven stories, not plot-driven? To show, not tell? But how easy is it to really write characters that come alive on the page? Some writers have a natural ability to concoct terrific characters who are full of life. Then there are the rest of us who need some help. In this workshop, Terry Spear will show the difference between average characterizations and those that will get noticed! In this online class, which features lectures, discussion, practical exercises, and handouts, she'll teach students how to captivate readers with engaging characters.
Terry Spear has published in many genres, including romantic suspense, contemporary, paranormal, and under the name Terry Lee Wilde, young adult paranormal and fantasy romances. She's the author of Winning The Highlander's Heart (Vintage), The Vampire...In My Dreams, Deadly Liaisons (Samhain), Heart of the Wolf, April, 2008, Don't Cry Wolf, April 2009, Betrayal of the Wolf, Allure of the Wolf (Sourcebooks), Deidre's Secret, Relative Danger (Wild Rose Press). She also writes nonfiction for numerous genealogy, WWII, teen, and family magazines, and has had romantic fiction published in magazines. Currently, she's working on her latest werewolf adult novel, Allure of the Wolf.

The End

Why finish writing a project?

I find that every project is different for me. Some I whip through, though most I get stuck on at some point, since I'm a pantser--writing by the seat of my pants. I couldn't plan out a story if I tried. I have lots and lots of story beginnings and some I've finished that need major revisions for one reason or another.

So why finish the story? Why finish more in the same vein? Because you might sell every one of them!!! I sold Heart of the Wolf, but had started Don't Cry Wolf before I sold, but quit, worrying that if I didn't sell Heart of the Wolf, why write another? Even though it was also a stand alone title. When I sold Heart of the Wolf, my editor wanted to see Don't Cry Wolf. It wasn't done! So I finished it and she wanted to see more...and bought Betrayal of the Wolf and Allure of the Wolf. So why finish the story?

Even if you don't sell, you still have them available to sell. And to me, that's the main goal. With every book you write, you hone your skills more. Some get really good at writing the first 3 chapters for contests, but what about avoiding the sagging middle? What about learning to give a compelling end that will encourage readers to pick up the next book and the next one? By writing the whole tamale, we gain more experience. :)

And the best part? We have books to sell. :)

Terry, who is off to work some more on Allure of the Wolf--54K done, 46K to go. Downhill slide!

And Romantic Times Magazine (4 Stars!!) had this to say:
HEART OF THE WOLF Terry Spear •••• HOT A solidly crafted werewolf story, this tale centers on pack problems in a refreshingly straightforward way. The characters are well drawn and believable, which makes the contemporary plotline of this story of love and life among the lupus garou seem, well, realistic. Hmm, from sexy shapeshifters, to guys who definitely need a good soak in a hot tub to remove the dirt and uncover those hunky muscles in 10,000 BC, there's nothing like an alpha male to stir up a girl's heart.

So what do you like? The hero who is all confident, secure, alpha through and through, or a little bit beta--with definite reservations about his hero qualities--like our reluctant hero in 10,000 BC.

Well, Devlyn Greystoke in Heart of the Wolf is not a reluctant hero, quite the contrary, but he does have issues with his ability to best the devil alpha pack leader! But to win Bella Wilder's love, he'll have to fight to the death. And what's not to like about a hero like that?

So what can the "early man" hero do but rescue his blue-eyed goddess against insurmountable odds in 10,000 BC? Love will conquer all, right? At least we hope so!
