The Difference Between Night and Day

You never know what will happen in the dark of night when a park closes.

When writing a book, the scenes in it truly can be the difference between day and night. I had picked up some Halloween books for my granddaughter and one was about what the owl sees and hears at night. Usually the books are all about babies and animals spending the day doing something and then going to bed at night. At least that’s what we want the children to get from the bedtime story–we had fun, now it’s time to sleep.

The nocturnal animals aren’t out during the day, and the diurnal animals sleep at night, so even this has to be considered when writing about night and day.

The other thing is people can’t see at night.

When I was writing one of my Highland stories, I realized they really couldn’t see each other in a room without light. lol So I had to make a light source. With my shifters, the animals can see well at dusk and dawn because their wilder animal halves can.

It’s the same with doing photography. Where is the light coming from? What is highlighted and what is in the shadows? How can the photo pick up anything in the dark without some kind of light?
At night, you can’t go to many of the stores because they’re closed. You can’t get hold of certain places in the dead of night. Some stores aren’t open until later in the morning, some restaurants only open in the evening.

So what happens with an ordinary set of stairs leading up to the maze gardens in the Arboretum at night when the center is closed? You’ll have to experience it for yourself because at night, the world is a whole different place.

I wrote 1,000 on Cougar Magic last night, despite baby wearing me out. But I also brainstormed with one of my beta readers on an issue I need to resolve in the story. Now I need to figure out how to bring that part of the story out. I still need to work on SEAL edits, but I needed a fresh mind to figure out how to change the opening–my editor says I have too much stuff packed into a couple of days and trying to change that is going to be a nightmare since everything is connected. I think all the stuff is doable. I could do them.

I might have to show that time frame better. Her flight is only 1 hour and 15 mins, but delayed by 15 mins, and then she gets lost driving from Denver and that could add another 15 mins. So she’s half an hour late to the rehearsal…and I said dinner, but I can change it to luncheon. Yay! And now I think I can do everything I wanted to do like I had it! I think my editor was imagining like a 3 1/2 hour flight and an hour delay, etc…. I just have to make it clearer.
Okay, I’m off to get busy! Have a super day/night!

Bear Shifters, Anyone?

Holly Black Bear, picture I took in Minnesota

Of course! I started out with Loving the White Bear, but I also have a confrontation with a grizzly.
I started to have a grizzly in one of my wolf shifter stories, but it seemed like too many characters and I was afraid my editor wouldn’t like it. He was just adorable too. But I went ahead and cut out all the scenes pertaining to him, and every time I re-read it for proofing, I missed him. So he will have to be in his own story too.

For now, I’m back to working on cougar shifters. I reached 30,000 words last night, not sure I’d make it because I had baby all day, had to take her to the doctor and then to the grocery store to get medicine for an ear infection.

I'm also working on Taming the White Bear and hope to have it done this year.

This weekend, I hope to make it to the halfway point!

Have a great day!!! We might get rain. Yay!~ We got some yesterday, twice, both not predicted at all and much appreciated!

Memorial Day is a Day to Honor Those Who Died…

…in all the wars while serving in the American Armed Forces.  Memorial Day started as Decorations Day in 1868 to honor Civil War soldiers who had died. That’s what Memorial Day is all about. Not just a 3-day weekend holiday off from work, government agencies and banks are closed, and we don’t get mail, and lots of folks are having barbecues.

But it’s nice to take a moment to remember what the day stands for. Thanks to those men and women who served during the time of war and sacrificed their lives.

And I’m off to work! Need 2,000 words on SEAL Wolf Surrender, just for minimum word count, and my publisher is changing the title from the other book: Her Jaguar Protector to You Had Me at Jaguar. I thought that was cute.
Have a great weekend, whether it’s a 3-day holiday, or just the same old thing. I’m off to write.

Writing and Gardening

I’ve been working on the cover for Claiming the White Bear. It helps me to visualize the characters. I added a little word count to that book yesterday (up to 12,000+ now), and to SEAL Wolf Surrender. I’d prefer a conflictive couple for the cover of the new white bear book but couldn’t find any. Conflict is better! For a book that is romantic suspense.

Anyway, I started Claiming the White Bear at Christmas time while visiting my son and DIL. He was playing a game and I was watching it and giving direction (lol) and writing. Perfect vacation. But then I got a new contract for 3 more books and had to get down to writing deadline books.

Oh, and my daughter claimed the Sunshine ligustrum that volunteered next to the house. So I’ve got to try and dig it up for her.   I love being able to share plants!
I’m back to the word count!!! Have a great day!!!

Between a Wolf and Hard Place $1.99!! And How Does $1,000,000,000 Stack Up?

 $1.99!!!

Alpha werewolf Brett Silver has an ulterior motive when he donates a prized family heirloom to the Silver Town hotel. Ellie MacTire owns the place with her sisters, and he’s out to get her attention.
Ellie is even more special than Brett knows. She’s a wolf shifter with a unique ability to commune with the dead. Ellie has been ostracized, so she protects herself and those she loves by revealing nothing—not even when strange and dangerous things begin to happen in Silver Town. And especially not to the devastatingly handsome and generous wolf who’s determined to win her over…

So I was trying to figure out how big a stack of $1,000,000 would be in $100 bills. Hey, it’s doable. You can put it in a briefcase, no problem! You can stick $10,000 worth of $100 bills in your pocket, easy. That bundle is 1/2″ thick if it’s all new dollars. If it’s old bills, it can be up to 1″ thick. You can do it!

Research is fun, but time-consuming. I end up reading all kinds of things that I don’t need for the story. Sometimes, I discover something else that might really add to the story. Sometimes, I learn I can’t do what I envisioned because it wouldn’t be feasibly possible. Now, if I wrote strictly fantasy, then I could stretch the bounds of reality, yet I still would need some constraints to make the fantasy world seem real. Even though my world isn’t exactly straight up real, I mean, if werewolves didn’t really exist, I need to keep the world as real as possible.

I learn all kinds of amazing things when I do research for a book. Who would have ever thought you could keep $10,000 in your pocket without any problem???

Have a super fun day!!

Time for Flowers! Four-Leaf Clover! Dragonflies! Butterflies! And Jaguars!

The jasmine is growing wild in the woods behind a neighbor's house.
I found a 4-leaf clover while pulling weeds in my garden!
 Wood sorrel oxalis in bloom.
Grape hyacinth in bloom in front of the gourd fairy house.

Sleepy gerbera daisy. And an awake one.
 Baby blue dasher dragonfly.
I can't remember which butterfly this is. :) It was on some purple weed vines.

I've been taking care of my daughter's corgis in addition to my two havanese, so it's been a dog's world, still keeping up with word count, working on the next jaguar book, Howard's story, doing gardening, planted a whole bunch of flower seeds, some new hollies, and some more daylilies.

And photographing everything! Hope your weekend is super fun!

Have a super, green, flowery day! Even if you just make it up in your dreams.

Eilean Donan in a Fantasy World--Sale on Dreaming of a White Wolf Christmas!

A picture of Eilean Donan in a fantasy world. I added cliffs reflecting in the water on the Isle of Skye (just love how glassy the water can be and the beautiful reflections that can be captured in Scotland!)…so that it looks like the fairy mushrooms are now a long distance from the castle, and the castle is no longer floating in the sky. I love both, but this just gives a different story.

Here is a picture of a snow leopard I captured in a shot at the Omaha Zoo. In Loving the White Bear, a polar bear shifter story set in Alaska, three brother snow leopards also live, and this is Simon. He and his brothers are on vacation in a nice fantasy spot. It appears he is grooming himself after he went fishing. Do you think the koi will catch the dragonfly? Nope! He makes a narrow escape. And that’s my story!

Easter Bears with Free Lambs and Demon Hunter is Now Available!

Not only do I love to write, and photograph anything and everything, but I've been making award-winning teddy bears for a millennium. I had a couple of orders, and that always inspires me to make more. So here are the ones that sold:

And I have another one to finish this morning.
More for sale:

But I also received a contract for three more wolf books, well, one is the jaguar Howard's story. Which I started on yesterday.

And I finished the Demon Hunter, a teen demon guardian's story, the third one in the series.

Demon Hunter
Demon Guardian Series: Book 3
The Demon Guardians are back…
Hunter is half a Matusa demon, determined to help his human-raised demon friends return to the demon world to find their families. And to help Alana learn a way to keep portals from pulling her to them, and getting herself into all kinds of trouble. Not that she can’t handle some of the trouble on her own. She’s a half demon too, and half witch. Jared is looking for his parents. Celeste is looking for hers. Samson is there to protect Alana, though Hunter keeps reminding him Alana is his to protect.
It was a simple mission, but nothing for the demon guardians is ever simple. Between dealing with a demon who is organizing demon hunters—who go after Hunter and his friends, a major train wreck, and all sorts of havoc, it’s no wonder the demon gate guardians end up calling in reinforcements this time.
As long as Hunter can get Alana to agree to be his mate, he can save the world. Alana will never give up her hot demon, but she believes he should work a little harder to prove he is the one for her. And he’s not going to give up trying to convince her either. But they still have one little problem: staying alive long enough to do it.

Off to write on Howard's story, finish another bear, ship bears, feed puppies, and all that!
