Heart of the Wolf--Thriller!

“The thrilling start to a wonderful werwolf series!”

Fresh Fiction Review

Heart of the Wolf

HEART OF THE WOLF is the first book of the series of the Heart of the Wolf
same name and I look forward to reading the rest. I was also pleasantly surprised to get a bonus novella about Bella’s twin sister Serena after finishing this newly reissued title. There was also a sneak peek of the different series based on the white wolves that Terry Spear is writing about also. I look forward to reading all of her Werewolf series in the future. They are definite must-reads on my list of series to complete. http://freshfiction.com/review.php?id=65658

NaNoWriMo--My Highlander!

In the spirit of NaNoWriMo, I'm challenging myself to write 50,000 words for the month of November. I'm working on My Highlander, and hope to have it done, early December and then I'll be working on the next white bear book.

But, I just received word I must do a bunch of blogs for the re-release of Heart of the Wolf for January too!
What's great is that I have a new novella in the story too, so if you read it, but would like to see more of their world, grab up the new copy and enjoy in January! I can't believe it's been 10 years since I wrote it and started with Sourcebooks!

I'm off to get back to My Highlander so you can read it soon!

Beastly

Beastly

I enjoyed Beastly, a new version of The Beauty and the Beast. I liked the idea that the ugly part of the inside of the boy was brought out on the outside of him and he had to find a way to show he cared about someone, to quit being so self-centered and downright mean.

This was a vintage photo of a little French girl. Isn't she adorable?

http://oldphotoalbum.blogspot.com/

Did you know that the French were big on hunting werewolves? So when this photo was taken, they might have been having a trial concerning a suspected werewolf.

My daughter would have said, "That's random, Mom."

Random? Absolutely not! Well, maybe just a little bit. Okay, maybe a lot. But truly, the French did participate in werewolf trials.

And I still have to say the purported werewolves were fake. How do I know this? They would not have given up their secrets. Ever.

The big question is--is the young girl a werewolf?

One look at the expression on her face and I have my answer. What about you?

The End!!! Soon, Hopefully

This is me (well not really, although I have rapelled off cliffs), but this feels like me as I strive to reach the pinnacle...the end of the story. :) I've got the weekend off finally, and so HAVE to meet my deadline on Monday. Have to.

And so that's my post...no rest for the weary...got my word count, have to end the story, and then keep polishing it up. Soon, I'll get back to commenting, to having a life, to...I don't know. The possibilities are limitless. :)
Back to writing and rewriting! Hope everyone has a terrific weekend! :) Terry

Not Here Really

Have to run to work and my mother is still in the hospital, so between working, or trying to, and calling down to the hospital to get an update on her status, I'm really not here or anywhere. argh. *sigh*. But in the meantime, I'm working on The Accidental Highland Hero. What's wrong with this picture? He's got the bare chest right. But somehow the socks and shoes make it look a little too dressy when he has no shirt. Not that I mind that he's shirtless. Just the opposite. But I'm thinking bare legs and bare feet, more of a rough and tumble kind of guy would even be better. But, hmm, the chest is very nice.
Okay, off to the real world....

Sinfully Sexy Saturday Ahead of Incoming Ike

I just finished Deadly Liaisons edits for the new vampire romantic suspense and am in the middle of finishing up The Accidental Highland Hero in a couple of weeks. This guy could be James when he's out of his kilt and taking a dip in the loch. And then it's off to another werewolf adventure.

Hoping Ike won't hit us too bad. The winds have already picked up considerably this morning. Torrential downpours are expected. And I expect that we'll lose our satellite, maybe our electricity as any little storm can do it.

I'm off to work in a little bit. Hope that won't be a disaster. Grocery stores were crowded and the gas pump lines were insane last night. People were stocking up on bottled water--we've made additional ice to help keep our food referigerated. Hopefully, it won't be anything like what Houston has experienced.

Hope everyone has a Sexy Saturday and stays safe in the path of the storm!

I've Been Shipwrecked!

Hmm, I feel I've been in a shipwreck and I'm trying to find what's left of the pieces. :)

I've moved, closed on the house, have a library talk to give this morning, and can't find anything. :)

But otherwise, it's a great Saturday! I woke at 4 am, couldn't sleep and so have been working again on Allure of the Wolf edits. Should be done soon, hopefully this weekend. Just got word that Betrayal of the Wolf is going into edits...AND, it will be a FALL release after Don't Cry Wolf's spring release in 2009!!! Woohoo, no waiting 11 months from one book to the next. So I'm really excited about that.

Allure of the Wolf should be a Spring 2010 release, and have to get to work on the next couple of books. I'm working on Deadly Liaisons edits also--a great vampire romantic suspense, and have to finish The Accidental Highland Hero.

What's really great about writing, is the wonderful fan mail we receive from time to time. I got a letter from a lady who has an incurable illness and is stuck at home, and has read Winning the Highlander's Heart three times, plus bought copies for her friends. It's letters like these that make me love writing so much, despite all the trials in getting the works published. And another, from a thirteen year old girl who loved The Vampire...In My Dreams, couldn't put it down, and is dying for a sequel. Then I had a note from a lady who watched the book trailer for The Vampire...In My Dreams and loved it. This, after I found someone had given it a one star rating.

With all my heart, I thank my readers, for encouraging me to continue sharing my stories.

Right now, I'm off to search for the magazines I have stories in to use in my talk today....if I can find them in the shipwreck. :) Will anyone be at the talk? I envision seven people...the other authors who are speaking, the librarian, and my mother. :) The good thing is we have chocolate kisses to hand out. Chocolate is always a good thing to help cope with adversity.

What do you do to cope when you've been shipwrecked in life???

What to Do When...???

You ever feel that you are torn everywhich way but loose? Have conflicting goals? Not sure what to do first???

With the 107 degree heat here, I have to do yardwork early, but I need to hide in a cave and finish Allure of the Wolf, but I need to clean out my outer building and keep moving stuff in case I've sold the house, but I have to work on online classes, and write up two new ones.

I pretty much have my days planned first thing in the morning. But what do you do when nothing works like it's supposed to? Yesterday I hung screens in the windows for the supposed buyers of my house, but I found that the other owners left me 5 short. My mower is still in the repair shop---over a week, and so I weedeated, but the weedeater kept hanging up and I didn't have time to mess with it before the potential buyers came to look at the house again.

Then I had to run to town to make a counter offer, but I had to stay home because my internet wouldn't work--phone line staticky...but the phone man said it was fine.... Line busy, usually means my line is full of static. Good news, my line is clear, I didn't get charged, and he bought a copy of Heart of the Wolf. Bad news, my internet wasn't working still and I had to get to town before things closed to take care of other crucial business. So I called my internet provider, got a nice foreign person, and guess what? My wonderful internet provider changed the access number. Why not forewarn us??? I asked. I wouldn't have had to wait 3 days to get a phone repairman out here, spend 9 hours catching up on online class lessons with my students at my son's apt--he had that fast internet stuff--wish we could get it out here--and miss calls for items I had for sale in the paper so I can move!!!

*Sigh* Now I'm back online. It's almost like having a car that doesn't run. It's essential to have working!

The good news is--I sold The Accidental Highland Hero, sequel to Winning the Highlander's Heart. The bad news--I have to finish writing it! :)

So what do you do when you need to be outside doing stuff, inside doing stuff, in town doing stuff, all at once???

I need five of me. :)

Shapeshifters!!!

As I'm writing Allure of the Wolf, I look for pictures about Arctic wolves to get me in the mood. Sitting in the 104 degree heat in the south makes it hard to envision cold Arctic weather. So here, my hero has dropped his glove and has shifted into a werewolf. Neat, huh? See the wolf track??? And here he is, protecting the camp in his wolf form.

And then, back in civilization, he's shifted again and getting cleaned up. Hmm, now I can see the story more clearly. Sometimes so many things distract me--things that have to get done, it's hard getting back in the story. So sometimes, creating a photo album of the story can help. :)

What do you do when you're trying to work on a project and nothing seems to be working?

Writing Short

Yes, I'm short, but I don't mean that kind of writing short. :) The other day we had a call for short stories from one of my editors, and I had been wanting to unload my computer of short stories I've already written. But three of the ones I like best--because they're paranormal--have already been published, although I do have the rights back. I just sold "Trick or Treat" to True Romance.

So I was looking at some of my other stories--really great beginnings, however, they already have too many plot threads to turn into short stories. So what makes a short story a good read, but still short? I was just talking to an author friend who says he always has too much story to tell to write them short. And another who said she loves writing short, but can't wait for the day to write long.

I write both because I love the variety. To take a single plot line, a few really great characters and make a story come to life is the ultimate goal for a short story. Or several plots/subplots, lots of twists and turns and write a full length novel.

But I'm lazy. I have tons of story starts, and several short stories. I want one of them to work. After editing Deidre's Secret all day yesterday, editing a partial for another editor, a blurb for yet another, and working on Allure of the Wolf, trying to wrap my mind around another story--and make it short, isn't working. I hate it when I have no control. I'm the writer, right? It's my story.

*sigh*

One that I was working on last night, that's already over the word count for a short story limit--is great. I love it. I've trimmed some of the extraneous stuff and not so extraneous stuff, but the problem is still, I have too many plot threads. Too many, and there's not enough time to tie up all the loose ends. And I love the way I've started it, so, that means it'll just have to be a longer story.

Back to the drawing board. If I'm going to do this, I'm going to just have to give in, bite the bullet, and---heaven forbid, start a new story.

What is Urban Fantasy?

Urban Fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy that takes place in contemporary times. Which means, gargoyles, and demons, and yes, werewolves, oh my, live in our times. Just think, you could be conversing with a werewolf or a vampire even on the Internet and never realize it. You thought some of the people out there were scary? Well, in an urban fantasies, you don't know the half of it.

How can us poor humans face a world like that? In the past, these fantastical creatures were often evil. Now? Lovers. Werewolf lovers. Vampire lovers. Gargoyle lovers? Even half human/half demon lovers. Yep, it takes all kinds to make the world go around.

And that's what's fun with having an imagination and sharing it with the world. No longer are the princes just plain cursed...the prince who is a bear by day, the prince who is a frog...nope...now the princes are vampires, and princely ghosts, stone princes, and well, yes, even frog princes of a much sexier nature.

What are your favorite kinds of urban fantasies and why?

Heroes in the Dating Game & 3-D Character Online Workshop

What does a hero need to do to garnish the heroine's attention?
Smile...talk to her about what she finds interesting. Approach her with confidence but not too quickly. Lean in and act interested, but back off if she leans away, her space invaded. Ask her for a date for something she expressed an interest in. Keep eye contact, listen, and lighten the tone of conversation. Be positive and fun.

Sound like a hero? Nope. LOL Sounds like the dating game. So what's wrong with the hero in this scenario? For fiction, NOT real life, the woman wants to be pursued, sought after, approached quickly, not left to linger, and often the conversation is confrontational and not sweet and light. There's no fun in reading about that.

:) So for dating tips, these are great ideas! For writers, forget it. We have to have conflict between the hero and heroine! That's what makes fiction fun to read. I think of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Lots of conflict, lots of fun, and lots of sexy make-ups afterwards. :) For fiction, sure it's great. But marriage? Nah.

So what do you think? Do heroes in real life and heroes in our stories have double standards?

What a Character!!! Jump from Cookie Cutter to Great 3-Dimensional Characters in Your Writing!
How many times have you heard how important it is to have 3-dimensional characters? That the publisher wants character-driven stories, not plot-driven? To show, not tell? But how easy is it to really write characters that come alive on the page? Some writers have a natural ability to concoct terrific characters who are full of life. Then there are the rest of us who need some help. In this workshop, Terry Spear will show the difference between average characterizations and those that will get noticed! In this online class, which features lectures, discussion, practical exercises, and handouts, she'll teach students how to captivate readers with engaging characters.
Terry Spear has published in many genres, including romantic suspense, contemporary, paranormal, and under the name Terry Lee Wilde, young adult paranormal and fantasy romances. She's the author of Winning The Highlander's Heart (Vintage), The Vampire...In My Dreams, Deadly Liaisons (Samhain), Heart of the Wolf, April, 2008, Don't Cry Wolf, April 2009, Betrayal of the Wolf, Allure of the Wolf (Sourcebooks), Deidre's Secret, Relative Danger (Wild Rose Press). She also writes nonfiction for numerous genealogy, WWII, teen, and family magazines, and has had romantic fiction published in magazines. Currently, she's working on her latest werewolf adult novel, Allure of the Wolf.

The 4th means so much more to me than fireworks and hot dogs--my son is in NYC this weekend with fellow AFROTC cadets taking a break from his AF training and watched the fireworks there. But he and others like him who have served in the Armed Forces, are on Active Duty, or are in training, I salute you. For that's what the 4th is all about--freedom and independence, and our soldiers making it possible. :)

The End

Why finish writing a project?

I find that every project is different for me. Some I whip through, though most I get stuck on at some point, since I'm a pantser--writing by the seat of my pants. I couldn't plan out a story if I tried. I have lots and lots of story beginnings and some I've finished that need major revisions for one reason or another.

So why finish the story? Why finish more in the same vein? Because you might sell every one of them!!! I sold Heart of the Wolf, but had started Don't Cry Wolf before I sold, but quit, worrying that if I didn't sell Heart of the Wolf, why write another? Even though it was also a stand alone title. When I sold Heart of the Wolf, my editor wanted to see Don't Cry Wolf. It wasn't done! So I finished it and she wanted to see more...and bought Betrayal of the Wolf and Allure of the Wolf. So why finish the story?

Even if you don't sell, you still have them available to sell. And to me, that's the main goal. With every book you write, you hone your skills more. Some get really good at writing the first 3 chapters for contests, but what about avoiding the sagging middle? What about learning to give a compelling end that will encourage readers to pick up the next book and the next one? By writing the whole tamale, we gain more experience. :)

And the best part? We have books to sell. :)

Terry, who is off to work some more on Allure of the Wolf--54K done, 46K to go. Downhill slide!

How Do We Get Inspired When....

How do we get inspired to write when everything in our lives can be turned upside down? Turn it into a story? :)

Or, find a visual stimulant. :) This works. Hmm, just finished one of those shower scenes in Allure of the Wolf...

I've got my house up for sale, trying to keep the acre yard trimmed and the house clean, got tile guys here and painters that I decided I needed, and after the painters destroyed my privet, I'm ready for a much needed break.

So shower hunk helps.

I missed posting last Saturday. Missed posting on another blog Wednesday. Trying not to miss too many things I'm supposed to be doing, but what with the upheaval in my life, it's hard not to!

Ever do that? Two days later think, ohmigosh! I was supposed to be at that doctor's appointment Monday?

Have edits due on a YA by end of month...9 days from now, over 1/2 through with writing Allure and teaching a great group of happy hookers....yet, trying to keep up with promotions. I'll be blogging about How Much Realism in Fiction is Too Much on another site Wednesday...and all I've got to say is I'm sure staying out of trouble. Kind of.

Yep. That's the way life is right now. Perfect for a story. Conflict, conflict, and more conflict. Great to read about--that's what makes a story fun. But not real life!!!

*Sigh* One more visual stimulant for when I go back to editing the shower scene
and then it's back to work for me! Have a super Saturday, oh, and a question to ponder:

What do you do when life stresses you to the max? How do you cope? What gets you back into shower, I mean, saddle to keep on going?

Sexy Settings

There's something about water and bare-chested men that is just darned sexy. Bare-backed can work too. I never was much interested in fishing, but this guy would definitely change my mind! Don't you love his...uhm, waders?

I find adding water to a scene can really make it sexy! In Heart of the Wolf--it's the rain. In Don't Cry Wolf, it's the shower. In Betrayal of the Wolf, it's the beach. And in Allure of the Wolf, haven't come to that part yet. :) It's awfully cold in the Canadian Arctic! :)

What do you think? Fishing look any better from this viewpoint?

Sinful Saturday & a Contest

Hmm, in Heart of the Wolf, one of the villains is a wild game hunter and his house was full of animal skins. But the hero was searching his place for clues as to whether the guy is a cold-blooded killer or not. So here Devlyn is, reading through emails on the guy's computer to see if he was connected to the murders or not.

It's fun taking a picture and describing a scene that was in your book, or using a picture to help describe a scene. I did that with a palatial farm in Heart of the Wolf that was for sale in Oregon so I'd get it right as far as the number of barns a big farm might have, cattle, etc. :)

I wanted to share a pictue that my Rebel Romance Critique partners have stashed away in the photo album--hunky Car Wash Guys. They know how to do it right. Keep the clothes from getting dirty--wash without. Hmm-hmm. :) So here's the version instead of Car Wash guy after he finished washing the car, minus the rest of the hunky picture. And I'm not talking about the souped up red sports car either!!

Have a super Saturday and check out my contest at Deadly Vixens!

Settings in Stories!

Next week we're supposed to talk about settings in stories, but I wanted to jump into the topic today. Right now, I'm in the middle of trying to get my house ready to sell, and I've had one trouble after another. Two weeks of trying to get a painter to paint my garage--I've painted the rest of the house on my own, thank the heavens, or it would be ten years before the house was ready. But I go out to check on what the guy has done, professional painters with professional prices--cracks not plastered over, holes not plastered over, and the worst? Peeling paint just painted right over!! I could have done that! And not paid a fortune for it. But the thing is, I wouldn't have done that.

So how does this relate to setting? I would rather be in a different setting right now!!! In another world, just about anywhere. So I've been working on a winter wonderland for my fourth wolf book, Allure of the Wolf, and it's a challenge, but it's a nice break from painting woes!

It can be difficult to write about a place you've never been, but as a writer, it's fun learning new things and taking on the challenge. So, I take all the experiences I've had living through snowy winter storms in Wisconsin, Oregon, Colorado, Maryland, and even St Louis, and ski trips to Colorado, New Mexico, NY, and Pennsylvania, and then do tons of research.

I've learned so much about the Canadian Arctic and it sounds like a fun place to visit, though I'm more of a tropical paradise kind of person, but no wolves in the tropics.

So where would you like to go if you wanted to get away from it all and money was no object?

Hunky Cowboys!

I loved 310 to Yuma and stories like it and was hoping Westerns were on the return...
After painting 10 doors and fifteen door frames, mowing an acre, moving dirt, and weedeating today, I was ready to hire a cowboy to take over all those jobs and more...

We even have room to put up his pony! :)

I'd even provide the tub for a hot soak!
Sigh, I hope Westerns are coming back--the cowpokes at least! :)

The Thrill of the Paranormal

I've always been fascinated in the paranormal from the time when I was a teen and watched the local community college put on the play Dracula and Hansel and Gretal, to ghost stories at the school library and tons of mythology, and fantasies too, like Beauty and the Beast (not the Disney Version) and all the other childhood fantasies, where the man and woman loved each other, but were destined to be star crossed lovers if they couldn't break a spell, or kill off the evil witch. So yeah, I've been in love with the paranormal forever.

It's only been really recently that I discovered the paranormal world of romances with a happily ever after for some of the most unlikely types of stories, from goddesses and demons to ghostly hunks, and, yep, werewolves.
I'd have to say for me, Dracula was the closest thing to a sexy romance, but it was never a happily ever after for the poor vampire. The same with the other stories, the witches and ghosts were not the main characters, but the villains or secondaries. Not as far as romances go at least.

And then there are the tons of psychic detective shows and ghost hunter shows, and fantasies like Narnia and Star Dust, and lots more great stories with paranormal elements.

From werewolves like Heart of the Wolf and Don't Cry Wolf, to vampires and witches in The Vampire...In My Dreams and psychics in Deidre's Secret, I love to explore the paranormal or urban fantasy realm.
So if you could have any paranormal ability, whether it was some kind of psychic ability, or shapeshifting power, what would you want to have and why?
