a day in Hoorn ...

Weavers market in Hoorn
only once a year on a Wednesday in July ...
Many "textile-friends"
have that date fixed in their calendar !

Daughter and I were going by our friend Caroline's car,
a one and a half hour drive from Rotterdam.

A warm and sunny day
(though the weather forecast wasn't that pleasant for the afternoon ...)

There were already lots and lots of people when we arrived !
We split because Caroline waited for some more friends
that were coming from other places.

colours !

peg loom and wooden printing blocks

"Kantha" (inside of a jacket)

"Kantha" (outside of another one)

Soooo much to see ...
sooooo many goodies ...
I know there were others (that I know) on the market
but I hardly saw a familiar face,
only lovely "STUFF"

The five of us had a good lunch near the harbor ...

(no ... no eel ...
they were just bringing these inside, from the "IJsselmeer")

... on a (wobbly) boat, with a view on the harbor mouth
where lots of sailboats were seeking refuge
for the foretold bad weather)

(bad weather that didn't come)

Then back to the market !

Where there was some lady, that makes beautiful shrouds out of felt, for burial

And more stalls with more lovely items.

In the end of the afternoon it was so hot again
that we went home before it all ended.

At home Man waited with hommmme mmmmmade Lasagna !!!
Mmmmmmmmmmmm !

Time to see what goodies the two of us had

A hand dyed shawl, cotton scrim, wool with silk,
silk hankies, labradorite pendant, drop spindle and some
special closures for felted bags.
Abundance !

HAPPY

Because of the sweltering heat in the afternoon
the toads (eight or nine) came out for diner ...
probably flying ants.

What a day !

silk floss

On the Weavers Market in Hoorn last Wednesday
I met again Ien Rappoldt.

Always when I see her on markets
I admire the wonderful things she brought
from her travels to south-west China
particularly from the Miao and Dong people
("click" ... sorry, only in Dutch, but the pictures speak for themselves)

She not only collects beautiful embroidery items,
she learns the techniques from the local people there !

I once bought an original old sewing case
and we have her book about the Miao.
In the old sewing case were still some silk threads left,
but this time I bought a variety of wonderful colours in silk !

Mmmmmmm ...today I started stitching with it.
I had began with a lot of blue scraps
(invisibly basted on a thin backing fabric ... I started even two pieces !)

The small one
(15 x 15 cm)
Love the "dotted" kantha stitch !

This time Ien Rappoldt also had these lovely
hexahedron good luck charms the Dong people make.

There was a little booklet,
strips of paper and some yarn went with it
so you can make your own !

My first !

(the hexahedron is an origami one,
that was lying around, made by granddaughter)

weavers market

WOW, WOW, WOW !

What a wonderful day we had !
Thanks
daughter, Caroline, Pauline, Jolanda, Margriet and Helma !

But oh my, it was
WET
in the early hours of the market !!!
The rain came pouring down
and that was no fun :
we had to take refuge
under stalls, in shops and restaurants !
Just too bad for the many stall holders
who had to protect their goods with large plastic sheets
and hope for the best !

But eventually it stopped raining

And then, it was gooood  ;-)

Just a colourful impression of some of the wonderful goodies !
(click on the pictures to see them bigger)

Of course daughter and I took some of the goodies home

Yes, some very special things !

Jacket : daughter's ...

belt : mine ...

and lots of stuff for felting, spinning (knitting)
and embroidery.

One of the felting-exchange friends couldn't come
so I had to take one of the felt pieces home with me again.
I'll wait with those pictures
till that one arrived there via the mail.

weavers market in Hoorn

I was very lucky today :
my friend Caroline (of the felting-exchange) had told me
she was going to the "weavers market" in Hoorn
and when I asked, I could go with her !!!
Yippeeeee !
(I had never been there, but heard a lot about it)

A steady drizzle accompanied us to Hoorn
and it only grew worse.

(We met another felting-exchange friend,
Paulien, who lives in that neighbourhood
and much later Anneke who came by train)

Umbrellas up, but it got only wetter,
so after the first few stalls we stopped for coffee !

Mmmmmmmm
these colours make you happy !

"Rest in Felt"
Does that say what it looks like ?
Yes, this lady makes winding sheets (graveclothes) out of felt !

This particular one she has made for her mother,
still very healthy ... and 84 !
The mother explicitly asked for it
and wanted lots of flowers.
So special !

Here we had lunch,
waited for number four of our party,
and I also found my long-time-no-see blogging friend Siets !
It was dry, so on we went.

There were many more lovely stalls
but ... I was too busy
(feeling all the goodies
and buying some)
to take more pictures !

Thanks ladies, especially Caroline,
for this wonderful day !
