Modern Art/Moderne Kunst

I spent today visiting a local museum (Museum Ludwig in Cologne) that has quite an impressive collection of modern art. There's also a current exhibition by the artist Cosima von Bonin titled „Cut! Cut! Cut!“ that features a huge amount of textile objects – from fence elements covered in Laura Ashley fabrics to cute and strange fabric softies and embroidered wall hangings, combined with all sorts of other materials. She even included zippers in some white slipcovers covering her objects, presumably for laundering?! You can watch a video featuring the exhibition here (scroll down a bit).

Ich bin heute ins Museum Ludwig gegangen, ganz unbedarft um moderne Kunst zu gucken, und fand durch glücklichen Zufall die Ausstellung „Cut! Cut! Cut!“ der Künstlerin Cosima von Bonin vor. Bei Frau von Bonin muss die Nähmaschine heiß laufen, fast jedes Objekt enthält irgendwo Stoff, sei es ein Zaun mit Laura-Ashley-Stoffüberzug (ich Banausin hab daraus nur Vorhänge gemacht!), Stofftiere und -Wesen oder wandgroße Stoffbilder. Sogar Reißverschlüsse in weißen Überzügen habe ich entdeckt, wohl für die Wäsche? Sehr ordentlich. Ein Video über die Ausstellung findet Ihr hier.

I'm not very versed in the arts, but I have always felt that there is a distinction between „artists“ and „textile artists“. I was surprised and happy to see an artist working so much in fabric exhibited in a museum along with Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns.

Ich kann mich auch irren, bin wahrlich keine Kunstexpertin, aber mein Eindruck war bisher immer, es gibt „Kunst“ auf der einen Seite, „Textilkunst“ auf der anderen, und nicht viele Überschneidungen. Umso größer meine Freude, so viel „Stoff“ neben Werken von Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns zu entdecken!

I didn't bring my camera (and didn't buy the catalog which I may come to regret) so I don't have a picture to share, but I would recommend the exhibition to textile lovers in the Cologne region. It's only on until the 15^th, so hurry!

Leider hatte ich keinen Fotoapparat dabei und war zu geizig, mir den Katalog zu kaufen (was ich bestimmt noch bereuen werde), deshalb gibt es heute kein Foto. Allen Textilinteressierten lege ich die Ausstellung ans Herz, sie geht allerdings nur noch bis zum 15., also Beeilung!

Re: Art and sewing, I have made a dress in a fabric reminiscent of Monet's Waterlilies. No picture either, I still have a self-fabric belt to finish, but I did wear it today and was happy to wear something me-made to the exhibition!

An meiner persönlich Kunst-Stoff-Schnittstelle habe ich ein Kleid aus Monet-Seerosen-artigem Stoff fertiggestellt. Auch hier fehlt das Bild, da ich erst noch einen passenden Stoffgürtel nähen möchte. Trotzdem hatte ich es heute schon an und war froh, passend zum Thema der Ausstellung gekleidet zu sein!

Artistic Pursuits – Kunstsachen

Hallo Nähfreunde! Ich hoffe Ihr hattet ein schönes Osterfest, soweit Ihr das feiert. Die Kinder haben noch Ferien und hier herrscht fröhliches Tohuwabohu. Leider keine Zeit zum Nähen.

Is sewing an art? Claire has a fascinating series on this and other sewing themes; if you haven't checked her out you should! I've always felt that sewing is more of a craft than an art; on the other hand it fulfills my need to create, to think up and make something. Is that art?

Ist Nähen Kunst oder Handwerk? Für mich eher letzteres; andererseits brauche ich es für mein inneres Gleichgewicht, mir ab und zu etwas auszudenken und mit meinen Händen entstehen zu lassen. Ist das Kunst? Claire diskutiert das und viele andere Nähthemen in einer interessanten Serie, leider auf Englisch, aber lohnenswert.

When on vacation, my need to create doesn't go away. I usually take lots of pictures and try to involve the children in some sort of creative project. We just went away for a week and inspired by Elsie Larson's art diary and Spottedroo's series on painting, I bought a handful of acrylic colors and we went to town.

Im Urlaub nähe ich zwar nicht, aber ich fotografiere viel und versuche, mit den Kindern etwas Kreatives zu machen (und wenn's nur Kneten ist). Wir waren gerade eine Woche weg, und da ich kurz zuvor bei Elsie auf die Idee eines Kunsttagebuchs gestoßen war und Spottedroo eine kleine Einführung in Farben und Malerei gegeben hatte, habe ich mich getraut, ein paar Acrylfarben besorgt, und im Urlaub losgelegt.

Do you need to be „good“ to be an artist? I used to think so. Having children made me reconsider my position. Children have this un-selfconscious way of singing, dancing, painting, crafting for their own joy. I don't want them to lose that and express themselves and be creative only if others validate it, if they're „good“.

Ist nur der ein Künstler, der „gut“ ist? Früher dachte ich das mal (und hatte überhaupt keinen Spaß an Kunst). Die Kinder haben mich eines besseren belehrt; der Kontrast zwischen singenden, tanzenden, malenden Kindern und den Erwachsenen, die sich das alle nicht mehr „trauen“ ist so groß und so traurig, dass ich viel dafür tun würde, dass meinen Kindern ihre Freude nicht abhanden kommt.

I try to be a role model. I feel like painting so I paint, regardless of practice, technique or what ever the result looks like. I had so much fun.

Also versuche ich, ein Vorbild zu sein. Ich habe Lust auf Malen, also tu ich es, egal ob ich irgendeine Ahnung habe oder wie es am Ende aussieht. Ach ja, und Spaß hat es auch gemacht!
