Illustrated Hair Tutorials

side twist chignon
express beach waves
crown braid
glamorous 40s wave
1960's french twist with flowers
These collaborative hair tutorials by She Lets Her Hair Down and illustrator Samantha Hahn are genius. I'm incredibly lazy when it comes to being creative with my long hair so I'm always looking for easy tutorials. The fact that these are illustrated is simply icing on the cake. Check out all of the tutorials here

Nothing says autumn like a mouthful of windblown hair, right?! Ok, so maybe it's just me that that looks unsightly with my hair whipping around my head. These ladies look downright lovely. Oh well.

Great Hair + Happy Weekend

top knot with pom poms (found via miss moss tumblr)
Are you still rocking the top knot? I know I am and I'm loving this little edition of a bright pom pom. Aside from dealing with my long hair in hot weather, B and I have had an interesting week settling into our new home. We've gone from excited, to worried, to discouraged, to excited, to doubtful, to restless, to excited and the cycle goes on and on. We knew we took a chance moving to a new place sans jobs and we prepared as much as we could, but honestly, I'm not sure anything could have prepared us fully for this little adventure. I'm still thinking of it as an adventure, by the way, because who knows where we'll land when it's all said and done? That's life for you. One big adventure.
Do you have any fun plans this weekend? Besides a trip to the flea market, I think it'll be pretty low key for us. Hope yours is great! xo
p.s. don't forget to enter the Shabby Apple giveaway where you could win any dress of your choice!

Hair Inspiration: Lightly Tousled

where is the cool
Since it's about 100 degrees in North Carolina and over much of the country, I'd like to think that no sane individual would willingly blow hot air on their already boiling head and, therefore, hair dryers are being retired nationwide. If you're anything like me and have long hair, you're either sporting the top knot, or allowing it to dry naturally in a frizzy freaking mess lightly tousled look. Admittedly, I realize these examples probably took plenty of heat to achieve, but I feel better fudging the truth and thinking I can achieve a similar with humid air alone. What about you? Have you given your hair dryer a break?

Hair Inspiration: The Top Knot

aaand, my own (unglamorous) version.
The top knot is undoubtedly my go-to hair style for the summer. Since it's so stinking hot in Georgia, I can only stand to have my hair down when I'm in the office. As soon as I get home, up it goes! It's so simple and can be as tight or as loose as you like. It doesn't get any easier.
How is your hair handling the heat? Are you sticking to a particular style this summer?

Hair Inspiration for Spring

I desperately need to figure out new ways to wear my hair. I recently got bangs (which I love) and my hair is growing, but I am having a hard time getting creative with it. It's either down or in a ponytail and I need a Spring pick me up. I think I'll start with A Cup of Jo's hair tutorials and then maybe I can gain enough skill to move on from there. Or not. Any suggestions?

Photography: Laura Taylor

In a serendipitous stroke of luck, a very sweet reader identified the photographer of the second image in this post which led me to Laura Taylor's portfolio. Laura has a knack for capturing people in what seemingly appears to be the moment the model's guard comes down. I find her Polaroid series especially alluring and beautiful.

Happy Weekend + Bangs

Happy Weekend friends!  Do you have any special plans this week?.  I looking forward to spending some time with B and I have an appointment tomorrow morning (assuming it doesn't get canceled for the third time) to get my hair cut.  I need a change and I think bangs are just the pick me up I'm looking for. I'm crossing my fingers I don't absolutely regret this decision and hate them, but alas, it is only hair, right?  I'll be documenting the hair situation on Twitter of course because what good is Twitter if not to talk about hair and other silly things?.  Hope you have a good weekend.  xoxo

D&OC loves: hair bows

lace rosette bow pin $12; red and cream striped bow hairclip $10; lenton hair bow $12; satin and crochet clip $18; bow what joy hairclip $12.99; heart h $25; fabric bow hairclips $8; mini peter twisties bow clip $8;  full tilt chiffon floral alligator clips $4.99; i am your garden from years ago $15.50tartan bow clip $7; valerie's black bow hairclip $14.99; fabric bow hair clip anchors away $7

I worry that I'm getting too old for hair bows so I figured now is the time to wear them until I'm definitely too old.  I think hair bows are sweet and unexpected when paired with a clean, minimalist outfit.  That's not to say I won't pair a hair bow with a girly ensemble as well, but as much as I don't want to be considered too old for this accessory, I also don't want to mistaken for a 12 year old.  I find people are in two camps regarding the hair bow:  love or hate.  Which is it for you?
