The right place at the right time

It's 6 AM, and where are my retreat friends? Most people know that I go to bed early, but I've been known to stay up later -- I just don't always say that. But I'm pretty consistent on when I get up. Last night, I was working on something (you'll see it later today) that needed to be done, so I stayed up a bit later than usual. As a matter of fact, I was the one that closed the call last night.

And then I was up early this morning and have already got a lot of work done. I don't think those retreat ladies are up yet!

So my nose behaved yesterday but felt all stuffed up. I'm still stuffed up today, but it's probably no wonder with all the dust in Studio B. Let's see how the day goes, and I'm trying to keep myself hydrated!

Lexi was so cute yesterday morning. Halloween decorations are appearing, and those giant inflatables are interesting. As we were walking down the street, I spotted something that made me wonder how the girls would react. When Murphy and I passed, she stopped and barked. Of course, that is Murphy.

But when Lexi and I approached, this was her reaction.

MOM -- something scary!

Oh my gosh --- I was killing myself laughing. It's like Lexi was trying to hide behind the tree. And she gave those little AARF barks that she does, not the big throaty ones we get from Murphy!

And what had them so worked up? A giant inflated cat whose head turned from side to side.

MEOW!!!!

She warmed up to it and even got close enough to sniff it. That's my Lexi -- EVERYTHING must be sniffed.

WAIT -- it's a FAKE cat!

Later in the afternoon, I walked to the mall, and there was good progress on the new Cineplex building. But no work has been done on the inside yet, so it'll still be a while before we can go. Wouldn't it be nice if it were done in time for our annual Christmas Day movie date? We could even WALK there! Well, I could walk; DH will take the car!

Progress on the movie theatre

Let's get down to some talk about quilting. We had THREE very successful classes yesterday. The first one was on Pre-Cuts -- what are they? How to work with them? Why do we have a love/hate relationship with them? While the group does not have to make a quilt (yet!), they have homework, and it's tough. Some of them will find it very hard to do, so let's see how brave they are!

Then in the Scrap class, we had a blast as we checked out some areas of concern in sewing spaces. Oh boy --- some of them, well, they will be a challenge. So again, they don't have to make a quilt (yet), but almost all of them have massive amounts of homework ahead of them!

And the last class was the table runner class, where the focus was on choosing quilting designs. I should post those pictures at some point. I'm so happy with the work the students are doing. This is one of those classes (well, all classes are like this), but the more you do, the better you get. And they are ALL doing the most fantastic job. KUDOS to everyone!

It's all about taking the tools you have, learning to use them, and improving your skills. I have one more session this morning -- Out of the Box and NOPE -- the presentation isn't done. I haven't even started, but it's at 10 AM, so there's loads of time to get that prepped. Besides, I had other stuff to do this morning.

I sometimes sit in front of a Zoom meeting and have nothing to do, and I know many people do handwork. I have a small Sue Spargo kit that I thought would be fun to work on. So off to the project closet to find it. I'm not sure where that went, and it's small. I will find it, but in the meantime, I found this hand-quilting project. It's a panel about 12" by 18", with the quilting motif stamped on it. I could do this -- it would be perfect.

OK -- so where's the thread? There was no needle or thread with it. I dug out my hand quilting thread, and OH BOY -- none of them matched the weight of the thread I initially used.

Thread weight is NOT the same

The original thread seems thicker -- it's the one on top. So I'm tempted to use one of the others and keep going. Or should I rip out what I've done and start over? I haven't done much, so catching up wouldn't take long. My thought is to do some with the different threads and see if there's a difference before I start to rip out the other part.

Only a small portion has been quilted

Knowing me, I'll have to rip it out. I know -- I can't help myself!!!

So this is what has been waiting for me to work on for weeks, and I've ignored it until the last possible moment. It's a customer quilt, and I owe the owner a HUGE favor.

Customer quilt

She is new to quilting and had issues with the piecing, where one of the rows was almost two inches shorter than the others. Yep, the seam allowance is the first thing one checks, and honestly, it appears equal across that row. This stumped me, so I did some finagling last night and strategically added two inches to the row. If I didn't tell you, you would never know.

But as I stood there looking at the quilt to ensure that I was adding the last two rows in the correct spot, I realized that FOUR blocks within the quilt were rotated. ACK!!!!!

Usually, I wouldn't be piecing or fixing a customer quilt, but as mentioned, I owe her a big favor, and all the turned blocks were in the same row, so this is what I did last night. I removed the part of the row that was incorrect.

Surgery on a quilt top

Then I took the blocks apart and put them in the proper orientation. Like a busy beaver, I was up this morning and got the entire quilt back together, and it's lying over the ironing board as it needs to be pressed.

The quilt top is in one piece

The backing is loaded on the long arm, and my goal is to get it quilted today, so I can put the binding on it tomorrow, and it will be gifted this coming weekend. Yikes!!!

So you all know I'm trying to get rid of most of my stuff. Yes -- even my quilting stuff. Well, in a strategic way, and indeed, I'm not just giving stuff away, but you never know when an opportunity will arise. And I will say that I would NEVER have considered doing this in the past.

During our Virtual Retreat last night, we got talking about GO! Cutters and the Qubes. Someone has several of the Qubes, and she uses them! I have a 6" set, which she did not have. Guess what? I gave it away! It was a mistake that I received the darn thing. Several years ago, GO! told me I was one of their ambassadors, and the next day, they realized that I was NOT an ambassador, so to compensate me for the mistake, they sent me the Qube set.

6" Block GO Qube

Not only did I get the Qube set for the 6" blocks, but I was also given the Companion set.

Companion Set

Both boxes are now sitting in the staging area in my living room. The cellophane is still on both boxes -- they have never been opened.

A present for someone

I would not feel right selling those as they were given to me. So they will now go to a good home where they will be used.

When I went to take a picture of the shelf this morning, I found this book. The book goes along with the Qubes!!

A pattern book for the GO! Qube

And now I have some space on that shelf. I could tuck more stuff in there to get it out of the way. I play Tetris with my space and if I can put a labeled box in there to take something else off that current project table or to bring something from upstairs down here, then so be it!!

Room on the shelf!

So you never know what can happen. I will never give away something just because someone wants it. But if I know someone will actually use it, and I will never use it, then I'm happy to part with it - either selling it or giving it away, depending on the item and how I acquired it. It's all about paying forward, and that's how it goes!! I hate to say this, but some people will appreciate a gesture like this, and others will not. I will NOT give things to those who won't appreciate them!

It was definitely a Win-Win for both of us!

Well, I see it's time to go. I'll post more information about my classes at Stitch by Stitch in Kingston tomorrow morning, but there are two for Husqvarna Viking -- Beyond the Basics with Quilting and a second one for embroidery. On day two, there's a beyond the basics with Quilting for PFAFF and then a discussion on mySewnet and all that it entails. So be sure to check out the calendar to get more details.

And today, starting at Noon, is Virtual Retreat. Be sure to stop by -- we met Debbie from Victoria last night, and she's working on many cool projects!!!

It's all about control

I was busy prepping my presentation yesterday and some other urgent work, so there was no time to listen to that remaining bit of the page-turner audiobook. So this morning, as I loaded the next customer quilt, I got back to it. But then it's time to get the day started, and I have 17 minutes left. How is that for control?

I'll probably finish while walking the girls this morning. All I can say is the author has a twisted mind. The plot keeps twisting at every page (or so it seems), and I almost feel like I need to go back and reread it. Yikes!! I'll have to get her other books. This is Paula Hawkins. She also wrote The Girl on the Train, which I've read. All I can say is that most of these psychological thrillers relate to twisted family ties. Need I say more!

Thanks to Gwen, who pointed out the "weeding" tool I discovered on one of my GO dies is, in fact -- well, it's a sort of weeder. It's meant to pull the fabric bits out of the dies, making sense. The fabric stuck in the slots on the dies when I used it the other day, and the weeding tool didn't click until Gwen mentioned it.

A weeding tool for the GO! cutter

So when I was teaching my applique class the other day, I took the cutter in case people wanted to cut some shapes.

Using the GO! cutter

Because I'm frugal, I have a box of leftover fabric bits that have fusible on the back. I run them through the cutter to cut small flowers, hearts, or circles. They are great practice bits for classes.

Bits to be trimmed down into shapes for applique

And here's my box of shapes - ready to applique.

Completed shapes!

Yes -- I know that's a piddly little job and who can be bothered? But I enjoy that kind of puttering, and I think that kind of puttering is what keeps me sane. If I'm always rushing to the next bigger and better job or fabric, my brain has no time to sit back and deal with the mundane. I think our brains need the ordinary to recharge! If we're always GO GO GO, it's not good. At least not for me.

Here's another example of control. I saw this gorgeous collection of fabric when I was at K&A, and I decided to think about it rather than rush and have them cut one meter of everything, which I've been known to do in the past.

Gorgeous fabric collection

Look at those vibrant colors. That makes me very happy, and this is the kind of thing that I'm more attracted to than cutesy tiny prints or big flower prints, and I like the monochromatic stuff with vibrant colors. What a change from when I first started to quilt!

More of the collection

This is the name of the collection, in case you are wondering.

The name of the collection

I may still get some, but I've decided that until I have a specific quilt to use it in, I'm NOT going to buy it. I do NOT need it -- I have lots of other fabrics that make me happy, and I should make those fabrics happy by using them up! Then I can get more!

What would make me really happy is to ditch a ton of fabric in that stash room that will likely never be used. And I will do that -- it will get donated to the community projects pile, but I have so much ahead of me that I want to get some of that caught up first. Then color by color, I'll go through my baskets. That will be a traumatic experience, but if I start with one basket at a time -- it will be done! When it's time to downsize, I'll have practically nothing but UFOs! And quilts to quilt!

I have a small bag of bodkins that I use with the serger when I want to tuck the end of a seam into itself. The bag had been "lost" for a long time, and I had no idea where I had placed the bag as I am usually very good about putting things back where they belong.

So when I taught the applique class the other day, I pulled two demo boxes off my shelf. One for applique, the other for fusible. As I unpacked the boxes and sorted through them when I got home, guess what I found? YEP  - that little bag of bodkins!!! I've been using a yarn needle, which works, but I wanted these metal ones.

My metal bodkins are FOUND!

The bag is sitting on the ironing board right now as I contemplate a new location for it. Where I used to have it isn't really a logical place. I should put it with the serger tools as that is when I use it most. Or do I put it in my hand stitching needle box? I've got to contemplate that a wee bit.

My sad little tulip garden! But I've got blooms, so the rabbits and squirrels didn't get everything. I'd better enjoy it as this garden won't be there next year! More on that coming up in a couple of weeks.

My tulip garden

When I moved that desk in the office, there was room to put the SECOND of two toy boxes on the floor for Murphy. I know -- she doesn't need two, but she has two. Lexi couldn't care about toys if her life depended on them. Too juvenile.

Within minutes, this is what the toybox looked like.

Murphy's toyboxes

Yep -- I heard Murphy ruffling around in there and pulling stuff out. She is not content unless there is a mess.

Speaking of Murphy, the rest of today is all about her. I now -- I'm catering to her ego! She's cute, and she knows it!!

Pinecones are dropping, and she adores carrying them around. And not just one -- but she managed to scoop two of them the other day. This is nothing, as I've seen her carry 5 around at once. Oh, Murphy!!!

Murphy and her pinecones

The next couple of pictures are ones that I snapped when she was trying to find her ball that I successfully threw into the bushes. This is her FAVORITE activity.

WHOA --- who put that tree there?

MOM -- I can't find the ball

OH - it's in there -- I'll get it

Mom -- I'm caught in the bushes - help!

Mom -- I won't fall in the pond - I'm very nimble

MOM -- I'm exhausted. Let's do it again!

And then she goes and sits in a muddy spot near the pond, and she is happy!

The perfect muddy spot for Murphy!

I had a big adventure yesterday, which you will hear about tomorrow. I know -- why do I do that to you?

I had to pop into the dollar store on my walk yesterday. This store is very close to two high schools, and I am sure that the mall and all the shops in this area must HATE their location because of the high schools. I was standing in the line for the self-checkout when two boys with backpacks came from the opposite direction. Excuse me! Excuse me! OK -- so at least they were polite.

Next thing you know, Excuse me! Excuse me! as they pushed through to the front of the line. What the heck is going on? OH -- so two other friends were waiting at the self-checkout.

There was a tiny woman as the attendant, and she reamed them out for holding that self-checkout hostage while the other two went off to get whatever. So the four boys crowd around the self-checkout with their backpacks and chattering away. I was ringing my stuff through, and I heard them get ready to leave. The small woman demanded to see their receipt! I was very impressed with her!

As I was leaving, about 20 other kids entered the store -- all with backpacks. I can only imagine how much gets lifted in that particular store.

What are they buying? Well, I would guess it's not kitchen stuff! They sell a ton of junk food at this dollar store -- chips, chocolate bars, pop, and I suspect that is what they are buying.

Why they installed self-checkouts at this location is beyond me, as it sounds like a recipe for disaster for the bottom line. I'd also get rid of the junk food, but have you noticed how huge that junk food section is?

I must remember to NOT go near any stores when school lets out. I've seen some stores limit the number of students that can be in the store at a time.

And when I popped into Indigo (book store), there was a service dog getting some training. I didn't stop to watch, but those two dogs were so well behaved! Now, if only Murphy had one smidgen of their control!

There is a lot on the agenda today, and I've got to get myself organized to make it all happen. And this weekend which was supposed to be quiet, is now jammed with activities all day, both days! But that's OK. There is an end to the chaos -- I hope. I keep saying that it does ease up, and then the deadlines come back again.

Have a super day!!!

Ciao!!!

On doing nothing................

I tackled some paperwork yesterday morning. I had a bunch of e-mails that needed to be sent to my group classes. After running around the house to collect photos of stuff and the patterns, I managed to get everything up to date!  OH - I still have some homework photos to post. And I'm happy to report that so far this year, I've been able to keep up with all my projects.

  • Lilla - 3 different blocks each month (4 of each for a total of 12 blocks each month)  - up to date. I cut the new blocks for May this morning.
  • North Stars - two blocks made. One of the two blocks for the coming class is partially made. Once that is finished, will start on the second one.
  • Ultimate Quilt Block Book - all homework is done! Just need to prep for the next class.
  • Hello Sunshine - I'm just a wee bit behind in that one, but not much. Then I need to get the homework prepped for this coming month.
  • Jingle all the Way - way ahead in that one. It needs to be quilted before the next class.
  • Stitcher's Garden - this is my UFO project. All the batting is cut for the remainder of the blocks. And I cut the background fabric for my two commitment blocks this morning. All the fusible applique is traced.

Oh yes - I'm on a roll to keep everything up to date! I need to be working on some samples as well. It feels nice to be up to date! It's all about focusing!!

However, I'm happy to say that yesterday after I got those e-mails out - I did NOTHING. The weather was amazing. I suppose I could have gone for a bike ride, but I was content to sit in the backyard. I dug out my lounge chair and sat on the "upper" deck. It was kind of HOT and I was in the direct sun, so I moved to the gazebo.

I ate lunch out there, I listened to my audiobook, read some magazines, napped. Between the girls and the fish pond, I was totally entertained. Just a slight breeze to get a tinkle from the wind chimes every once in a while. Seriously - it was a glorious day.

I chatted with my Dad as it was his birthday on Saturday but when I called, he was napping. We had a grand conversation. I heard my brother is retiring this year. Yikes - that got me to thinking. Well, I'm not ready yet, but I need to plan for that day. I think I'll retire from my four freelance jobs one by one. Not all at once - that would be crazy. However, if there isn't a buyer for those magazines, I might be out of that job very soon.

I'm still making quilts for them and no idea that I'll get paid. Unless someone coughs up major cash, I won't get paid.

OH - I should ask - how many of you checked out the settings on your SmartPhone???  Normally I wouldn't care, but now I'm happy that everything is as it should be. Next technology to tackle is the audio system in my car.

I'm trying to finish another project and I needed some circles. Lots and lots of circles. What's the best way to get lots of circles? Why the GO! cutter of course. I put fusible on the back of that burgundy fabric.

Running the fabric through the GO! cutter
To make the process even faster, I folded the fabric in three and layered it under the cutting mat.  Ran the whole thing through the cutter and LOOK - lots of perfect fusible circles.

Lots of fusible circles

Now one of the reasons, I wouldn't consider getting a GO! cutter in the past was the waste. Don't yell at me - it's the pioneer spirit in me!!!  I couldn't bear to throw out those bits. Sometimes, I don't think it so much about throwing out, it's about seeing what you can do with what others would throw out. I've got a great story for later this week about scraps.

So I cut apart that initial scrap and laid the bits on the smaller circles on the circle die.

Using the scraps to get even smaller circles

I ran that through the cutter to get smaller circles. I have a tin with circles and other shapes that I've cut from my scraps. I have a plan - it's just not time to deal with it yet.

Lots of small circles cut from the scraps

Have you ever noticed that we tend to put up with lots of small things that could be fixed with minimal effort? Take my backpack. Two of the zipper pulls had fallen off a while back. I used safety pins to open the zippers, but safety pins are not good zipper pulls. They pull the zipper offside and it's difficult to open.

Safety pins as a zipper pull - not a good idea
When I was at Lens Mills, I found zipper pulls. So I bought one on the first day I was there. It worked perfectly so I bought another one when I went back the next day. I'm not sure where that darn second zipper pull is. Let's just say that I can't wait to use my backpack again! It's my portable office whenever I travel.

Zipper pull instead of the safety pin

If you're a dog lover, you'll cringe at this next story, but there's an important message here. I was walking Murphy yesterday morning. She is ALWAYS on her leash. Both of my girls are always on their 6 foot NON-retracting leash so I have control over them (well as much as I can with Murphy). As we approached the soccer field in the local park (across the street from where we were walking), I saw two people with two dogs. They looked like bulldogs or something like that. They got near the center of the soccer field and took their dogs off leash. They continued to walk away from the street while the dogs played behind them.

In other words, they were NOT watching their dogs even though the dogs were off leash. Guess what? One of the dogs saw Murphy and made a beeline to her at the same moment that a car came down the street. I stood there paralyzed - what could anyone do? The dog got hit. I don't know how badly. The driver of the car did not stop. I know it was a white car. That's all.

The dog ran back to its owner so it was still alive. I'm not sure how bad it was hurt. I was so mad that I yelled at the people that they need to keep their dog on a leash and that the soccer field was NOT a leash free zone. I hope their dog required LOTS of medical care for them to realize that a public soccer field is NOT a leash-free zone for dogs. At the minimum, if you're going to take your dog off the leash, you better watch that dog like a hawk!!!!  Stupid people. Poor dog.

I think it's good to say that there are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners. Oh dear - where does that leave me with Murphy???

On that note - it's Monday!!  I don't have to leave early today. Yeah! I'm so excited and with all the stretching and shoulder posturing and the acupuncture, my neck is starting to feel much better. Yeah!!!! It's supposed to rain almost all week. Good - I need to stay inside and get some work done!

Have a super day!!!!

Ciao!!!

On your mark, get set, GO!

There's nothing like a good workout at the gym to get those creative juices flowing. I cranked out 32 K this morning on the spin bike and I feel great. I think the more we learn to push ourselves, the more we believe in ourselves and the more things are possible.

This morning I thought I would share my new toy with you. Joyce - please do NOT laugh. I've resisted this tool for a long time. I truly felt it was wasteful, too slow, expensive, and well, I wasn't interested in getting one.

I've chatted with many people over the last year or so and had the good fortune to borrow one of these tools from time to time over the past year.

What is it???  It came in a box like this.

I think you know where this is going.......

I find this inside that brown box. This box is much more exciting.

GO! cutter
I love that it's super easy to set up. Take the cutter out of the green carrying bag. Open the two sides and you're ready to go. Couldn't be easier than that.  Sorry for the mess on the cutting table - there's a LOT going on right now in the studio.

The GO! cutter is set up in mere seconds and ready to cut

I'm fortunate that I'm able to borrow a fair number of dies so I didn't have to go out and make a huge investment in dies right away. Yes, the cost of the dies can add up so if you have someone you can share them with, that helps a lot. I was sharing a cutter, but that was becoming a nuisance to carry that back and forth. Now we can just share the dies (although I've got a wee little stash of dies already).  A HUGE THANKS to accuquilt for their part in making this a reality.

Why did I break down and get a cutter? I teach applique and I want the students to be able to get right to the stitching as that's the critical part of having beautiful applique. Now I can prepare kits of pre-fused shapes for them to stitch. Isn't that a brilliant idea? BTW - I'm teaching an applique quilt this weekend at The Hobby Horse so if you want to be the first one to dig into my pre-fused shapes to practice your stitching - you'd better sign up fast! The quilt is a Kimberbell pattern called Hello Sunshine.

I fused a piece of Steam a seam to the wrong side of a chunk of fabric. I just grabbed something that I knew I wasn't going to use in a quilt. (or so I thought!). I cut the pre-fused fabric into strips that coordinated with the size of the first die I used - the heart. There are three sizes of hearts. I fan folded my strips and I got two big hearts in mere seconds. Now, how cool is that. I also learned that it's better to fold the fabric sides together, not the Steam a Seam side! Oh yes - I'll go into my hints and tips in another post.

First two shapes cut on the GO! cutter

Here's a shot of running the die and the fabric through the GO! cutter. You need a plastic mat to put on top of the die and the fabric. The mat protects the cutting blade, it provides a cushion to make the right thickness as it goes through the cutter and keeps the fabric from shifting. Anyway - you NEED that mat. Give the handle a crank and the die rolls through the center and you get shapes on the other side.

The die is partially through the cutter

One of the other reasons, I wasn't keen on the die cutter was the waste. So once I had cut my two large hearts, I cut a medium heart and then I managed to cut three small hearts. This is what was left of my strip.

Leftover after cutting my hearts

I cut a few more strips and cut more hearts in various sizes.
More hearts in various sizes

I had this scrap leftover. And I threw it in the garbage. I thought to myself who would keep this small of a scrap or what would you do with that. So yep, I threw it in the garbage.
Scraps from the die cutter went in the garbage

WAIT A MINUTE!!!!  My pioneer spirit just couldn't let me do that. There was still some fair sized pieces. Not big enough for the smallest heart, but I have other dies.

I pulled the scrap mess from the garbage and I grabbed a due that had circles and leaves/petals on it. I cut and cut and this is what I had leftover. There was literally SCRAPS leftover.  Nothing of any size was left.

Now this is what I call scraps
I know - you're asking yourself why I would do that. Well -- because. I like to make stuff from what others would throw away. I thought the circles would be great to offer the applique class to practice their stitching on. Also, the leaves/petals will be good for practicing the points. They are small - so what - a point is a point.

This is what I managed to cut from the smaller than a fat quarter chunk of fabric. I didn't count how many there were of each shape. I also used a large flower shape which will also be good for applique practice.

All the shapes were cut from LESS than a fat quarter

Now I have to find a place to store those shapes. I found a tin, but I'm going to put each shape into a plastic bag so they are easy to find.
Temporary storage for my applique shapes

Here's a picture of the three dies that I used to cut those shapes.

Dies used to cut the shapes

I have a lot more dies to try out. Now it's just to find the time, but I'm rummaging through those fabric baskets to find other bright colored fabric that I won't likely cut up to use in a quilt. Oh boy!

Now as I was cutting those shapes, TWO other uses for those shapes came to mind. Not one, but TWO. It's just too easy for those creative juices to flow at my house. My brain never stops and even when I'm supposed to be huffing and puffing on that bike in the morning, my brain is still working in the background thinking up things to make.

Will I share those two projects with you? I will when they get done!  I need a few extra colors before I can start either of them, but I can't wait. There are a few deadlines ahead of me at the moment. This week is shaping up to be totally crazy.

I had better write those ideas down because I've been known to forget things! Not only are there those two projects, but there's a magazine quilt as well that is made using the die cuts. You'll have to wait a bit to see that one as I haven't even started making it yet, although the fabric is in the studio.

The GO! cutter comes with a die that cuts a large square, a small square and two half square triangles. I didn't think I would use that die, but you know what? This will be perfect to cut squares to add to the applique practice kit.

Hmm - a matter of fact, I've just come up with another idea. And I might put together kits so that the students can try the same shape, same color fabric, but use different stitches and different colored threads. OH YES!!!   Anyone want to buy a kit? I've been wanting to do that forever but didn't want to take the time to prep the pieces. Well, that won't be a deterrent anymore.  Bring on the applique kits!!! HEY - I have to make this very type of thing for my other job as a freelance educator for SVP (Singer, Viking, PFAFF).  OH -  my to-do list just got a whole lot longer.

And just like that, I have a new project to keep me entertained for a long, long time.

On that note, I'd better get myself moving for the day.

Have a great day!!!

Ciao!!
