Peer Pressure

Peer pressure is a good motivator! A number of us have signed up for the One Block Wonder using a panel at Thimbles and Things. Not that I needed to make one, but it was on my list of quilts to make so now seemed like a good time. 

I found those small panels in my stash so I didn't even have to buy anything. I also found some coordinating fabric for the binding, backing, and the filler along the edges. I attended the class two weeks ago and today is class number two. We are supposed to have all our hexagons sewn. 

Hmmm -- I'm a wee bit behind. I still have THREE of five strips to sew together. Well, first I have to cut them into triangles!

However, I don't really care about the class today -- I mean, it's not critical to have the homework done. BUT a few of us are getting together tomorrow to discuss placement of the hexagons and help each other out with the overall visual look, so guess what I'll be doing later tonight? Yep -- I'll be sewing hexagons. 

It's always fascinating to see the three different orientations you can have fore each set. I didn't get too scientific about it -- for many of the hexagons, I just laid them out and sewed them up!

Here's my stack of hexagons. I'll have 60 in total and 24 of them are sewn. That shouldn't take too long. I had started sewing them as enders and leaders, but I don't have a lot of sewing gong on, so I started chain piecing them yesterday. I'll be chain piecing the rest of them once they are cut.

Today is a bittersweet day -- our company is going home. I'll be dropping them off at the airport in a couple of hours. The visit is always way too short, but then you want to get your life back to the normal routine. They just need to live closer so we're not limited to the occasional visit! But I refuse to move to BC just because she is there. You never know when your kids will move. No - I would move because that's where and when I want to move. And that's not reality at the moment!

However it meant that I had to get my butt in gear as they are supposed to take a quilt back with them and as at yesterday morning, the top was done and that was it. No binding made, no backing made. However I got it quilted. It's going to be nice and cozy as it's flannel on both sides and there's batting inside.

The binding got made and appliqed this morning. Thank goodness for machine binding! What ever did we do when all we knew was to sew it by hand? It took about 70 minutes to cut the bindng, trim the quilt and sew the binding to the quilt. All tasks that I could do in my sleep.

And there it is - ready to be packed. I didn't put a label on it -- it has my little tag and well, that's good enough.

I'm not sure where they are going to pack it. My child does NOT pack light. Not my problem!

I did have to laugh when I was qulting that quilt. Guess what I found? Yep -- a gold thread! Now where did that come from?

We are sure gonig to miss this cute little guy. Although he does have his issues with bathroom behavior. But he sure is cute!

I have to walk him several times day or "force" him to the backyard. The hazards of apartment living for a dog! He does love to go for a walk -- but he is so slow. My gosh -- he has to check out every tree and leaf and blade of grass.

I'm happy to report that I got some paperwork done and that felt great to get it off my plate. There's still a "bit" to go through, but the next couple of days are quieter. Well, relatively speaking. I have two presentations today, both in English and one class to attend. But that sort of takes up the entire day!

And I said that the weekend was free. What was I thinking? Sunday is free, but not Saturday. I have one class and a club! Oh boy -- that means I"ll be doing some homework prep on Friday and Saturday. 

Remember the quilt worn at the MetGala?  Well, it turns out the quilt was a find from a thrift store? It looked too gigantic to be an actual quilt. But here's a picutre of it on a bed. Hmmm --- so who was the designer there?

Anyway -- that's it for today. I've got to finish the editing here, get Little Bear ready for his walk - Murphy is NOT going to be happy as she will have to stay home. And then off to the airport and back home to do a presentation.

Urbanologie show and tell

 Let's have a look at some show and tell today. This is from the Urbanologie class. We're almost at the end of this project, and I confess that I still have a few blocks to make. In some months, we had to make five or six of the same block, and I got one made to do the homework, but not the others. The pieces are cut out, but I need to get them sewn together. I haven't had a chance to put the blocks on the design wall, so I have no idea what the quilt looks like. 

I'm using a limited and, for me - totally off-the-wall style of fabric. I wonder what the final quilt will look like? 

It's going to be slow and steady to get all the sewing done that needs to be done. Thankfully, I have some time today. There's only one presentation tonight, and the rest of the day is mine. More or less -- a few quilts are begging to be quilted!

Some people missed the class or didn't get their pictures to me. 


Interesting that they both did positive/negative with the blocks. I suppose that's how the pattern was, but I never noticed that. I must have a look at it and see.

This quilt is made using the Mini Quick Curve Ruler by Sew Kind of Wonderful. EVERY block has curved seams. The class is getting real good at curved seams! Wow -- check out their website, they sure have some interesting patterns, and I wonder how they come up with the blocks as some of them are very creative with the cutting!

I received a box of fabric yesterday for a new magazine quilt. And it took forever to figure out how to cut the tape to get inside! I swear they vacuum sealed the yardages and the pre-cuts as it all fit into this small box.

Little Bear walked the entire route of Murphy's walk, which is at least 2 KM. We were a bit slow for Murphy, but it wasn't the pace that was slow because those little legs can go fast. He has to sniff and pee on every tree! Murphy was not impressed.

Today it's all about working with an Endless Embroidery design. This is so much fun, and the top of the tote bag was a great example to complete the stitching. Check it out -- it's pretty cool.

It's a great way to check out the stuff I did live, and we're going to chat about tote bags and embroidery. If you read Post One, you would have noted the link to make the tote bag. I wrote a pattern, and the link gives you the instructions and a step-by-step account of how the bag is made. It's a culmination of all the best tips I found for making a  tote bag. It's fast to make and simple. Best of all -- the pattern is FREE. I know it's quite lengthy because it's a tutorial. I should find a place to put the actual pattern, which is only two pages. Then you can refer to the tutorial for the pictures. OK -- let's add that to the list of things to do. I MUST review my website and get it ready to publish!

And in case you are wondering, the next Virtual Sewing Retreat is on October 23 and 24. Just so you can have it on your calendars!

Well, I'm off to spin class this morning. I sure wish the cafe was open at the gym. Then I could get a protein shake once the class is over. I really need to get more protein in my body! I could make the shake when I get home, but it's complicated with the dogs, and I can't get to it until they are walked. Yes -- I could make them wait. Well, I'll get it figured out. I'll take some almonds to help this morning. 

I was exhausted yesterday and required TWO naps during the day. That is so not like me. But this week was a tad stressful, and my body just said, "we need a nap, and we need it now!". Thankfully, I had the flexibility to do that. The stress levels are way down this morning, so that will help!

Machine Embroidery

 

How many of you have an embroidery machine? OK -- so how many of you use it? I mean, really use it, so you are learning it. I mean experimenting and trying new things. Do you know all the functions? 

Even though I'm somewhat knowledgeable about machine embroidery, there's always something new to learn. I don't take classes, but I'm willing to make mistakes and learn by doing. I haven't wrecked anything yet! That's what I've been doing the last couple of days.

It's my week to blog on QUILTsocial, and I'll be sharing all my learning with you, so be sure to follow along.

And I'll let you in on a little secret. Even though I'm using the Husqvarna Viking Designer Ruby 90 embroidery machine, much of what I'm showing you can be done on your embroidery machine. 

I get it that many people purchase designs and stitch them out. I'm NOT allowed to do that for the blog posts and for my day job - simply because those designs come from different companies than those that pay the bills. So I'm all about learning to use the VAST array of tools and designs available through the embroidery machine, the mySewnet Embroidery Library, and the mySewnet Embroidery Software. And there's a LOT more information coming this week. 

What you can do with all those resources is endless! And even though everything is done for this week, I still have a huge stack of stuff that I want to embroider! Lots of stuff to play with to prep for the next week of blog posts!

So while I had two machines going yesterday, I don't have any pictures to share with you! At least not of sewing stuff, but here's a couple of the girls. 

Oh, before I say this, I have to laugh. It's amazing how people will ask for advice and then try to twist it around to what they want to hear, not what you tell them. Lately, I've had several questions about the design wall that I use. I'm particular about the product that I use. It's easy to cut, it's relatively inexpensive, it can be set up temporary or permanent, it's thick enough to pin through, and it's sturdy enough that it can be used free-standing. I've had so many people ask, "what about this product?". NO -- use the product I mentioned. "Well, what about this product?" NO - you are NOT listening. We did a bunch of research and figured which was best. If you don't want to listen, then don't ask!

OK -- so no pictures of quilting stuff, but look what happened yesterday. Some of the blocks fell off the design wall as I was juggling a laptop in one hand and trying to show the design wall. I didn't have time to pick up all the blocks that fell when one of the unpinned rows fell, knocking off a few blocks. Before I knew it, Miss Murphy was there sleeping on the blocks!

Look how little this guy is. He is way too small for that dog bed. That bed belonged to Little Sammy, and she is gone, but we kept the dog bed for some reason. Murphy loves it!

I had to laugh when I was at the gym as I had been chatting with someone about people who leave their lockers open when they leave. Do they leave cupboards open in their house?? Is it so hard to close those doors???

Those spin classes are brutal! And then having to walk the dogs right after just about kills me! I need to rejig the morning routine on Mondays and Wednesdays. At least, I think I have the food thing sorted out, so that's good. 

Well, that's it for me today. I've got two presentations today, more writing, and I'm way behind in my class homework follow-up. Then guess what? On Friday, it's the start of a new month, and the process starts all over again! But we are so close to the end of the classes!!! I WILL get them done -- I will. I have some time this weekend and next weekend. And I'm way behind on the long arm. Well, not way behind, but behind!

Fun times at the Virtual Retreat

 Oh my gosh -- we had the BEST time on the Virtual Retreat! You have to LOVE technology!! I had to be absent for part of it as I played chauffeur, but I could connect in the car once I dropped my passengers off, and I got to chat while I drove home.

There are so many things that we can talk about -- why do we need to talk about such a controversial topic like COVID? I have no issues with discussing it or it being a topic of conversation. What drives me crazy is when it gets heated because people lack the correct information or misinterpret existing information! I get so frustrated during these conversations, I could spit! And I think I did yesterday! We have a PERMANENT NO-COVID rule on the Virtual Retreat, and when it starts to get out of hand, I shut the conversation down!

I had one goal in mind for the day, and I managed to accomplish that. The goal was to finish the LAST TWO rows of this All in a Row quilt. I'm happy to say that the row of stars (just above the owls) is DONE! All the seams of those star blocks are twirled, and they fit together very nicely.

If you think those stars were easy to sew? Think again! The center of each is 2". The pieces above are 2" by 2 1/8," and the corner units were 2 1/8" square. You know it's sad when you are sewing, and you can tell that one of the units is 2 1/8" by 2 ¼" without measuring! Fortunately, I only made that one cutting error, and it was easy to rip that out and fix it. Then it went together like a charm. 

The last major goal was to do the stitching on the applique camper row. I've been putting that off for months and well -- no time like the present to make that happen. 

Oh shoot -- I forgot to take a picture of the applique that I prepped for my UFO project. OK -- I just ran downstairs to get that photo. Hmmm -- maybe I could learn to really love applique. I LOVE the look of applique, but it's very time-consuming.

And I'm happy to report that the camper row is now done!!!!  Here are my trees.

I intended to stitch a blanket stitch around the edges, but I decided to do a satin stitch instead. I'm really fast with satin stitch, and I can go around the corners and indents with minimal issues, so satin stitch it was! 

And on the section that joined the two halves of the trees, I used a mossy satin stitch. See how both edges are not even. I LOVE that stitch.

So all that's left is to trim the two applique rows and sew the rows together. I still have to stitch the applique for the two side borders (it's mostly prepped). The last step will be to decide on what final border the quilt will have. I know what I want; I just need to figure out the math. Yahoo!!! My goal is to have this done by the next class, which is not that far away! 

I'm doing not badly with keeping up, but it's a challenge, to say the least, and well, I have a couple of writing assignments that need to be done by - well, let's just say they need to be done ASAP. So that has been the morning's focus so far and will be for the rest of the day. 

I have some sewing to do before I can finish writing, so I'll do that during Monday sewing, but I think I'll have to leave them for a bit as I do some writing.

And at one point, he walked over the keyboard and put me in airplane mode, so I lost the internet and the Zoom call. Silly boy!!!

And then seriously  -- why does Murphy do this? This bed is way too small for her, but she loves it. Her butt hangs over the edge, but she is quite content, so who am I to throw it out?

We have company for a few more days, and it's a struggle with time to be sure. But we'll make it all happen. 

Oh, here's some eye candy for you. Some of the award-winning quilts were announced yesterday for the Quilt Festival in Houston. It's a weird world because normally the winners are announced on the preview night. Even better is that we viewed them as a group yesterday on Zoom and got input on them as a group. That was a fabulous experience, and thanks to everyone for that!! I really enjoyed the "quilt show." We didn't get to see the quilts in super detail, but we oohed and aahed collectively over the workmanship. 

Wow -- some of those quilts are beyond belief! Look at the two pineapple quilts. Those blocks are tiny with many pieces per block, and we were complaining about a 5" pineapple block when we did the Long Time Gone quilt!! How long did it take them to make these works of art? 

It's time to get moving and off to spin class at the gym. Then back to walk the dogs and then sewing and writing for the remainder of the day!

A wee road trip!

 

Another great day! OK -- every day is a great day - it just depends on how you look at it. Positivity is a good thing even though stupid things are happening in the world and around me, but I'm in a very fortunate position, so I really can't complain. 

The only thing I have is a TON of work, and it all needs to be done now. Computer work and sewing and quilting. When I woke up this morning, I just allowed myself to lay in bed contemplating it all but didn't get up! Well, not right away. I'll get to it as soon as I can - that's all I can do. 

Two more great Zoom classes yesterday, and the moment they were done, I did a quick run around the house, everyone got bundled into the car, and we were gone. Even Bear was ready to go.

The picture should give you a huge clue, but in case you don't know -- that's the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. 

I had to laugh as I dropped M, Mattie, and Bear off just at the start of the parking area. As they were leaving to walk around, I realized there was a parking spot, actually two of them right there. So that's how unbusy it was! There were people, but it wasn't really as crowded as I've seen it in the past, and I tried to keep myself distanced from other people. 

That parking spot worked out just fine as we were about equidistant from both falls. Let's just say that parking at Niagara Falls is NOT cheap! It doesn't matter -- it was worth it. 

So they went off to do their own thing, and I decided I would do some geocaching since I needed to get some caches before the end of the month. You know me -- it's all about numbers, and there's a geocaching challenge on right now. Get so many caches this month and get a virtual badge! Yep -- that's me - I'm living my life virtually. 

Well, not exactly as I have to do the work - I just don't have to manually log it -- it's all done on apps on the phone. What did we do before we had our phones? 

I found a cache near this beautiful quiet garden pond. A wee bit larger than our pond. I'm sure Murphy would have jumped in had she been there.

Then I found this one. That's quite a box for the cache to be hidden in. Someone is into woodworking. The box was tucked around a corner, and you would NEVER know it was there unless you were looking for it. I love all this lurking around. These were both in very public places. At the pond, tons of people were walking through, taking pictures of themselves or their group. I'm sitting on the edge of the pond on a big rock, trying to dig the cache out of a crevice and trying to be totally nonchalant about it! And NOT fall in the pond!

While the wolf is tucked away, it requires going down a small alley that's obviously a dead end and trying to look casual about it! 

I tried a couple of different types of geocaches, and look what I found. I had a great time by myself. They got to do what they wanted, and so did I.

We met up at the car, and it was hilarious as we got there pretty much at the same time from two different directions. We got to the car at 4:00. Our parking expired at 3:58! 

We took a quick detour to Niagara-on-the-Lake but didn't have time to stop. Another day perhaps. Back home to get onto the Virtual Retreat. Actually, I really enjoyed the day, and I MUST get out and do that a wee bit more often instead of trapping myself in sewing stuff. 

I managed to get these two blocks sewn together. This is for my All in a Row quilt, and I seriously want this thing to be done! If I really focus, I might have all the rows sewn together today. But not before I have a session of applique.

I did some other work but realized I didn't take a picture. I'll do that another day. 

And LOOK   --  this is the distance goal for walking across Canada. I'm now less than 1,000 KM from the finish!! This was a two-year goal, and I'm GOING TO MAKE IT. 

I'm looking for a good sew-along pattern. Does anyone have a pattern that they could recommend? I know -- lots of you are already signed up for some, but I'm looking for one more. No Jen Kingwell - I think we've got her covered. I'm looking at the Tula Pink Butterfly - but waiting for that pattern to be rereleased. There is the Rainbow Rainforest by Elizabeth Hartman. That's cute. The sew-along will be on Zoom, so you don't even need to be close to me to sign up! This one will be run through a store. 

Well, it's time to get moving! It's Virtual Retreat day, and I've got tons that I want to accomplish. But first -- let's get those girls out for their walk!!  Be sure to stop by and say HI!!! It's loads of fun, and we do not bite!

Keep the FAITH

Yesterday was D  -Day. D for delivery! And while I was out traipsing around, I received an e-mail from that UPS supervisor who is now my superhero. He was following up! You could have knocked me over when I saw that. He said he saw the package was marked as received, and could I verify that. And indeed it was received!! What a huge relief, and what a nice gesture from the UPS guy to follow up!!

Well, I'm a wee bit behind again this morning, but no fault other than my own. I had to prep the homework presentations for this morning's presentations. I'm almost done, and well, the girls will have to wait for their walk today as I was out yesterday, so I did not get done what I was supposed to. It's a bit of a challenge to have visitors and keep up with the workload. 

Never mind that partway through the morning, I zipped off to pick up my MIL. DH was going to go, but he's a bit busy with work of his own, and well, his work trumps mine (strictly monetarily, of course!), and I'm OK with that. So I picked up my SIL, M came for the ride, and we were all good. She seemed her same feisty self, given that we were having a discussion about getting married. The fact of getting married religiously rather than civilly to appease parents. Yep--- the world moves in strange ways. And why are appearances still so important to people? 

Anyway, it doesn't matter; she is home and seems fine, so that is one less thing to worry about. 

Then we bundled ourselves in the car - Bear, M, Mattie, and I and we were off for an adventure. 

Wait -- I saw this on my walk in the morning. Hmmm -- what kind of funny business is going on here? I hope they are married! Whatever it is, I don't want to know.

So we went to Crawford Lake for a wee hike. There was a geocache there that I wanted to find - the end of the puzzle cache that Ronda and I started a while back. I set off by myself to find a couple of geocaches while the others collected the clues for the puzzle. 

It was a frustrating day. I looked for three caches on my own and found ONE. The other two eluded me. The person previous to me also couldn't find those two, so are they missing? Or we just couldn't find them? 

Then we met up by the fishy bench to compare notes.

Those blasted "kids." They got all the answers right! Of course, they got it right the first time!! I swear that Ronda and I had counted the number of fish on this bench MANY times, and each time, we had a different answer. 

Then we were off to find the last part of the puzzle. We were in the right spot -- I double-checked the coordinates, and the description matched the location. But NO cache. That was a very frustrating day! 

Not to let the day become a total waste, I decided I would gather all the information to log the Earthcache. Those are caches that talk about geological phenomena in the area. This time, it was all about the lake, which is special as the water doesn't circulate, so whatever is on the bottom is likely still completely intact due to lack of oxygen! How cool is that? 

I had to figure out how many gallons of water would be in the bottom 9.4 meters of the lake. Yikes -- how do I do that? I calculated the lake's volume and then found out how many gallons of water exist in a cubic foot - I converted everything to Imperial and came up with a crazy high number. I halved it because of the slope of the lake and submitted my answer! 

That's what I love about geocaching -- it's a great walk, and it can be very informational if you choose to do some research. I'll go back another day on my own as there are lots more caches in the area. Right now, we are limited to 2 hours, and they send you an e-mail when your two hours are up, although it wasn't busy yesterday. 

That was a good thing because Mr. Bear wasn't on his leash for part of the walk. He seemed perfectly happy to just scout along the path, checking out things.

However, when M takes his picture, he practically smiles. He is super cute -- spoiled beyond belief, but super cute.

Yes -- only my daughter would wear light-colored pants for a hike. I even mentioned it to her, but I was poopooed. It's a hike in the WOODS, not the catwalk. But I digress.

We thought we would stop at Chudleigh's to get some pie. Before leaving, I had checked the website and knew that we had to pay $15 EACH to enter. I thought we would just head there to try and wheedle our way into the store to just buy a pie. Nope --- NO ONE gets past without paying.

Now I get that they have music and other activities inside, but seriously -- they should allow people to buy something from the store. However, we were directed to The Blossom Cafe nearby, where we bought a fresh crumble for $12, which I had for dessert last night!

And perhaps we'll have another adventure today. That depends on them. It's a challenge with all these people around to plan things. And I swear we had an entire closet of clothes in the car - just in case. Of what? Several years ago, M and I traveled around Europe, but I don't think we could travel together now. I'm a minimalist, and she is ...............well, I don't think she knows what that word means. But it's all in fun.

I'll take advantage of the time that she is here. The quilts and quilting can wait - nothing is more urgent than family. Sorry!  

On that note, I'm out of here and will attempt to get the last bit of homework done.
