The Tower fortress in Weesp was built in 1861 and is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. This was a defense line, located 15 to 20 kilometers around the center of the Dutch city of Amsterdam. The Defense line is 135 kilometers long, contains 45 fortresses and was constructed from 1880 to 1920.

The fortress was twice in state of defense during thr mobilisations of 1870-1871 ( the French-German War) and 1914-1918 (First World War). At full occupation, the fortress housed 232 men.
After the Second World War the fortress lost its defensive fuction and after a renovation it is since 1992 in use for Creative Groups, as painters and musicians.
