40k - Terrain - Ruined Aquila Showcase
Here are a few pictures of the original terrain piece showing what it looks like on the table top. The picture above is of my Aurelius Legion Rhino, in an old colour scheme, pulling up behind the Aquila ready to disembark its troops.
Here the Tactical Squad has crossed over the Aquila and taken cover in a crater.

40k Terrain - Ruined Aquila Finished
Here are some pictures of the original piece I did and you can see how they differ.
So how did I finish the terrain?
I painted the Aquila up to Bleached Bone and added washes to the ground and rocks then added static grass.
Next was to paint the Aquila up to white. I used a thinned down mix of paint as I wanted the colour below to show through for the marble effect.
I then added the marble 'veins' by using first a brown then a black wash.
Lastly I glued some sand onto the Aquila to show it has been there for a long while and painted that up to match the grey/black rock.
Hope you enjoyed the tutorial.

40k Terrain - Runied Aquila Part 2
So onto finishing the base. I used my trusty quick drying filler that is used for repairing cracks in walls etc. Spread across the base and worked into shape with my finger, use a spatula if you don't want to get dirty.
After letting the whole thing dry properly I cleaned up any unwanted bits.
Primed the piece in black. Note Do not prime if you don't want your foam to melt!! I primed from a fair distance away so as to have a little melting happen as it is supposed to be ruined and laying there for a long time. Then I painted the ground with Scorched Brown and the Aquila Black.
Next was to drybrush with successive lighter colours to reach Bleached Bone.
I painted the rocks a dark grey then drybrushed up to Codex Grey. The Aquila was painted Scorched Brown as a base because I want to have a marble finish.
Next up the final part.

40k Terrain - Ruined Aquila
About three years ago I made a piece of terrain inspired by The Honoured Imperium set from GW (see above). Unfortunately my blog was not in existence then and so never recorded the process. Towards the end of 2011 I made a second Ruined Aquila for my blog and recorded the process but 'lost' my pictures when I got a new computer and moved my stuff across etc. Anyway, I have found the folder that was saved in some obscure location and now I can show you how it was done.
First I prepared the base by cutting the basic shape out of hard board, that's what we call it here, and sketching the Aquila to get a rough idea of its size.
The next step was to trace the Aquila, from an image on my computer screen, onto a piece of paper. the benefit of doing this is that I could enlarge the image on the screen to fit the size of my base. Then I placed the image over a piece of High Density Foam Board and redrew the image pressing quite firmly to leave an impression on the foam.
Then I collected some left over bits of foam to build up the rubble on the base that the Aquila would rest on.
Next was to cut out the Aquila from the Foam Board. Don't worry if you break some bits off or damage the edges, its meant to be a ruin anyway.
Then I did a few dry runs of placing the Aquila on the rubble to get the best fit.
Once I was happy with the fit I used white glue to glue the loose rubble onto the base, once that was dry I glued the Aquila onto the rubble.
Next I will show how I finished off the ground on the base.
