German Grenadiers - Flames of War - Open Fire Set Finished

So all done, completed the wash and highlights. I am happy with the end result but can say that I don't want to see a 15mm figure for a while.

I have taken pictures of the figures arranged by the type rather than how they are represented in the rules.

Here are the Officers and NCO's

The Panzerschreck Team.

The multiple LMG sections

Finally the Rifle sections

Hope you like the way they turned out and leave a comment if you do.

German Grenadiers - Flames of War - Open Fire Set

So trying to stick to my plan which is to finish this amazing Open Fire starter set. As you can tell from the picture above I attached the figures to the bases first then added the sand, primed them with grey then started to paint the base.

I then painted all the infantry in the base colours which I have used the closest GW colours and for the uniform I made my own custom blend.

Progress is slow with these miniatures as the scale prevents fast painting compounded by the immense detail on them. Very nice figures but the scale is starting to worry me!! don't know how much more of these guys I can paint without my eyes going squint..lol

American Paratroopers - Flames of War - Open Fire Set - Finished

So here is the finished result. I added highlights after the wash and finished off the bases with grass and herbs.

Here are some pictures of the individual sections.

The Leader with Mortar and Bazooka.

The rifle section.

The MG section.

I found them to be very fiddly to paint because of the 15mm scale otherwise they turned out pretty well.

American Paratroopers - Flames of War - Open Fire Set

I decided to paint these models already stuck onto their bases and based. I hoped it would be easier than sticking them individually onto little cocktail sticks!

I based them with plain model sand and primed them grey.

Next I painted the base colours which I used form the GW range as time is an issue and I am not spending more money on paints..lol

After all the base colours were painted on I washed the entire model with a wash mix of 50/50 brown and black

Just need to apply the highlights and finish the base.

Flames of War - Pak40 Ammunition Crates and Shells Press Mold Finished

Well here it is!

All I had to do was add some highlights and attach the pieces to my Herb and Pepper base.

Below is a picture of the 2 guns together.

I am pleased with the end result considering that the castings were far from perfect.

Flames of War Pak40 Ammunition Crates and Shells Press Mold

As it was my intention to base my army on my thin plastic bases I also didn't want to add heavy metal pieces to the bases. The ammunition crates and shells are made of metal in the Open Fire set so the solution was to make a greenstuff press mold and use the cast pieces.

Above you can see the molds and the casts after a bit of cleaning up. Unfortunately the stacked ammo crates didn't come out as well as I expected, maybe because the mold isn't quite right or I didn't push the greenstuff into it well enough.

Either way I hoped that filing the cast to straighten up the edges and a decent paint job would conceal any flaws.

I started to paint everything with a base coat of Scorched Brown, then a 50/50 brown/brass colour mix on the shells.

Next I used a lighter brown on the crates and a brass on the shells.

After everything was dry I gave them a heavy wash with Agrax Brown wash.

Just need to add the details and some highlights.

Next up the finished pieces on the bases.

Flames of War - Pak40 - Base Comparison

I wanted to show the different look between the standard base you get with the Pak40 and the one I did with Herbs and Pepper.

The picture above shows the gun on the base as you would assemble it normally.

Below is the gun on the thin plastic base with Pepper and Herbs. It is my intention to base my force on these type of bases.

Which do you prefer?

The other item of note here is that I did a press mold of the metal ammunition box and shells to use on my new base. I will show that on the next post.

Flames of War Pak40 - The Gun

So onto the gun, I started with a black Primer, which turned out to be a bad choice as my custom Middlestone mix didn't have good coverage.

I needed two coats.

Next was a heavy brown wash, then clean up with Middlestone again.

The camouflage was as per the Open Fire video guide on the Official website.

The base brown camouflage was a 50/50 mix of Middlestone and Chocolate Brown and a 70/30 Chocolate Brown and Middlestone mix for the center part of the camouflage. The green was a 50/50 mix of Reflective Green and Middlestone as a base then a 70/30 mix of Reflective Green and Middlestone for the center of the camouflage.

Last a drybrush of Middlestone, followed by another drybrush of  Bone or Ivory.

 Next post the complete package.
