Pre Heresy - World Eaters - Dirt and Grime

Adding some weathering or dirt and grime is the last little addition to making your potentially bland colour scheme stand out a bit more.

As with the battle damage 'less is more' is probably the best way to go so with that thought in mind I watered down some Agrax Earthshade wash and carefully applied it to the recesses of the white parts of the armour where I thought dirt and grime may collect.

This wash wont really show on the Blue armour so I used a Rust pigment from Secret Weapon and also applied it carefully to the recesses of the backpack and shoulder pads. After a short wait to let the dust settle (joke) I wiped off the excess with a dry cloth and Voila! a nice looking mini that started off as a tabletop paint job only.

Hope you enjoyed the mini series.

Pre Heresy - World Eaters - Battle Damage

So painting battle damage on your models is not for everyone but I for one do like the look and in some instances I think it makes the paint job even better, what do I mean, well some colour schemes can look a bit boring or plain and battle damage can add that touch of variation to the scheme and make it stand out.

On the white parts of the model I painted Codex Grey to the areas that I thought would be prone to wear and tear and battle damage. On the blue parts of the armour I painted black, the reason for this is to create that  3D edge to the paint chips. Having the dark colour on first followed by a lighter colour gives it that depth and realism. Next on the Grey and Black ' chips' I painted Boltgun Metal for the final effect. You can then go even further and apply some washes to these chips to darken some with black wash  or add some dirt with brown washes.

As I am going one step further and adding weathering pigments to this model I will leave it there for now.

So stay tuned for the next part and leave some comments and let me know what your thoughts are on the battle damage look : yes or no?

Pre Heresy - World Eaters - On the Painting Table

If you didn't get a chance to see this post on The Horus Heresy Blog link

These guys really have a striking colour scheme but with myself painting white has proven difficult in the past, mostly due to the fact that I don't have a white or light grey primer. This means I have several layers of white which can get pretty thick and messy quickly.

After priming the model in black I used a mix of codex grey and white as a base colour.

I then painted in a black wash to add shadows etc. I was a bit too messy here and it meant more clean up after ward so try and be careful with the wash.

Now I painted in the rest of the white armour with Skull White, trying to leave the wash in the recesses. Next the blue armour, I used a base colour of Regal Blue, followed by a mix of Regal Blue and Enchanted Blue leaving the recesses in the base colour. Once dry I washed the areas with Asurmen Blue to smooth it all out. The red details were painted up with a base of Scab Red followed by a highlight of Blood Red. the world symbol was based in Scorched Brown and a highlight of Graveyard Earth, the sea was the same mix as the Blue Armour.

Here is the finished model.

Here is a another picture of the side of the model showing the icon I sculpted with greenstuff.

You can keep going with the layer and wash etc to add even more depth to the model but as a table top model its pretty good as is.

What I would rather do though is add some battle damage and weathering to take it to the next level, so stay tuned for the next post to see how that turns out.
