Edit: the giveaway has now been closed & winner picked. Comments still open though, in case of question and stuff :)

I’ll be the first one to admit that uh, sketches isn’t really my forte. Not if I *have* to follow it step by step (although in some cases it’s the most simple and actually the best solution). But – if you can allow yourself to handle a sketch quite freely without really feeling you have to do this and that because it’s on the sketch then it can be a wonderful startingpoint. And that’s what it is to me.

It’ll tell me how many pictures and elements I’m supposed to use, then it’s up to me to see during the process depending on what I have for hand if it’s actually necessary having this and that on the layout or if I’ll just ruffle it up and flip and add and deduct and put together and whatever.

Now, that being said – if you’re entering a sketch-contest you might want to double check what’s allowed to do with the sketch – some allows you to flip or mirror the sketch, others are more rigid. If it’s a contest then the rules laid down needs to be followed imho, and you really ought to be able to see on the layout that yeah, it’s the sketch alright – to make it just for everybody.

But if you’re creating just for yourself, just to get your project a flying start – then be my guest – do whatever you want with the starting point!

I’ going to share my process of working with a sketch from start to end. My starting point here is this sketch found at page 88 in the new Pencil-Lines Sketch Book by Anna Bowkis, the founder of Pencil-Lines. (You can purchase the book from here and yes, you can also find several of my layouts in the book so yes, this is a bit of self-promotion :) ) It’s a pretty three-photopager with nice elements which can be interpreted two ways – either with the scalloped border as your 12x12” base, or with the larger frame as the 12x12” base. I chose the latter. You can see from Annas example on the same page in the book that she chose the first.

Here’s the original image of the sketch, courtesy of Anna:

lo1 Picking out my photos from an awesome photo-assignment I had last fall for the job (I got to enter&ride a helicopter to shoot some photos of a couple of oil-rigs) – I decided I wanted a neutral-ish background to allow the colorful photos to really shine. I grabbed one of my favoritepapers ever – the grid one from Scenic Route (which’s gone now – the manufacturer. Bleh, so my stash of these papers are getting thinner and thinner :( Luckily Basic Grey have similar papers though – I guess I’ll check them out when my SR-stash is gone :p) Also note that I don’t really follow the orientation of the photo-elements that closely – I do try to follow the sketch but if the photo I want to use is landscape and the sketch says portrait - well – I don’t let it stop me if I like the photo or the sketch.

lo2 Now that my photos and base is decided, it’s about time to figure out what else to add to the layout. For these kind of photos I had a feeling Hambly would be a better match (from what I had on hand). And as mentioned – I did not want the photos to be overshadowed by the papers & patterns and stuff, so I opted for a transparency.

lo3

And some glimmer mist to add some more interest to the background. But ofcourse :) Grabbed a brush, shaked and opened the bottle and soaked the brush so I could spray larger splotches on the paper with my fingers running through the brush (not sure if I’m explaining it correct, but I hope you understand what I mean. I mean – this is kindergarten-stuff :) )

lo4See? Large, yummy splotches. This is Patina by the way. I't’s a bit lighter than Jazz Blue, but otherwise pretty similar in shade/color.

lo5 For more darker, vivid/opaque splotches I decided I whip up my distress ink reinker (demin blue), soak my (smaller) brush with it some and quickly dip it in a bit of water to dilute and make it easier to actually get the ink to get off the brush :p

lo6

For the square background (the scalloped one on the sketch) I decided to go with an oldie but goldie from Hambly Screenprints – a mini graph transparency in black. It would provide a nice background to the pictures I thought, without really taking any focus from the pictures themselves plus still allow the lovely splatterfun on the background to show through. I also decided to handcut the green “Hanging Heliconias” paper – I cut out three strips of them. I like how the Kelly-green color (note to self: obtain more scrappy papers in Kelly-green! Such a lovely color!) compliments the layout.

lo7 I ended up using two of the strips only though, because it seemed a bit overwhelming with three green strips. Swapped one for orange transparency though – it’s nice sticking to odd numbers when decorating.

lo8

I decided to staple the strips to the transparency before continuing. (I like to use my staples for pretty much everything. Especially when attaching embellishments that I want to still be a bit loose in the ends sort of. lo9

Pulled out my Luxe-labels. lo10

Decided that my title needed help to stand out on the layout, hence the label. lo11One seemed to be a little bit small on the layout, so I ended up layering two.

lo12

Threw a quick glance on the sketch and thought mkay, I can do something indicating the horizontal strip of paper. But I didn’t want it that broad (repeating: because I didn’t want it to steal too much attention from the pictures. I had a feeling solid patterned papers would in this case.) Ended up whippin up my Hambly Kraft stickers for this purpose.lo13

Only, I’m so cheap that I measure and cut stuff in two where it’s supposed to be covered anyways. What can I say. I love my Hambly! :p lo14Time to adhere the rest that hasn’t been adhered yet. Which was when I saw it missed something (apart from the journaling), did another look on the sketch and decided to add an orange strip across the main photo (notice how there was an “empty” space/square between two of the photos and the labels/title, where you could see the background-transparency? It felt like it needed to be covered – and it ended up covered – see below). When satisfied it was time to add the journaling. Which I intended for the right bottom of the layout. Only. Ended up with so much journaling that I think it skewed the whole focal point for the layout in the end – if I had been aware I’d write that much I might have tried to “move” the central focal point (the whole area w/transparencies and photos) a little more to the upper left. Ohwell.

Here’s the sketch again:

sketch07 And here’s the finished result:

whee

I think I did an ok job keeping most of the elements as they were on the sketch. When I work with a sketch I look at it in the beginning, trying to memorize how it looks – then while working on the layout itself I try to not look too much on the sketch, but rather pull the elements from my memory. It feels it’s easier then to not be stuck on something on the sketch that you might not agree with/doesn’t work for your project, and rather than getting annoyed or frustrated, just move on and do stuff on your own.

Materials: Scenic Route, Luxe Designs (labels and alphas), Hambly Screenprints, glimmermist and distress ink.

Hope you enjoyed todays walkthrough on working on a sketch/layout. Figured I’d do such a post on Sunday, as that’s when the Pencil-Lines sketch of the week is posted. And since we split the DT and it’s my Sunday off today I figured I’d post this one instead :)

~~ The Big Christmas Pressie Post ~~

Posted by Ania On Tuesday, December 22, 2009 8 lovely comments

This is my gorgeous littlesis.
And as of today, she’s in her last year of the twenties. Bwahahaha.

Happy birthday littlesis ;) Nyt siste rest av ungdommen din ;p

Miss you – håper dagen din blir superfin med snille unger og greier!! :)

If you’re like me, you may be feeling a bit like a stressed out maniac now these last days before Christmas (having LOTS to do tryin to multitask and getting…like, nada done..). Figured I’d share a bit of what’s been occupying me the last few weeks…(and I promise – this is the last post w/Christmas-pressie-stuff…saved those to go in one huge post so I wouldn’t bore you over and over again w/these sorta. Am nowhere close to done w/the pressies (unfortunately), but well- they’re just variations of what’s been shown already both here and in the older posts this December..)

I found this neat tip from Kimberly Neddo over at the Sassafras-blog, using the yoyo-concept on paper instead of fabric. Such an awesome idea, and a great way to use up those little scraps! :) I made quite a few to accompany the diff. gifts for this Christmas. If you spray the paper w/a little glimmer-mist prior the paper will be more cooperative and it’ll get a nice shimmer on it too – yay :)

More paper-yoyos and stuff…as said – awesome way to use up your scraps and make the pressies look a bit more prettier..maybe? :)

I’ve been mostly creating little bags w/treats inside & decorating matchboxes. Here’s the Hambly-version.

Lovelovelove this lace-transparency!

And really love the simplicity&elegance of this one. Sort of wish I had kept it for myself. Ahwell.

More Hambly. Papers and kraft-stickers. Yay! I’d either go for the elegant version myself, or the cool one. I’m not sure. I need a pretty matchbox to sit on the shelf of the fireplace, that’s for sure!

Remember this paper-flower-tip? Well, while packing the gifts I ended up with several strips of kraft wrap-paper. Instead of throwing them away I figured I’d put them to good use – spraying them w/red glimmer-mist (Candy Apple Red or whatever it’s called…veeeery red. The kind of color that doesn’t go away easily despite washing your hands and sort of looks yucky/gross on the fingers of said hand….say no more..:p). Anyways. It really looks awesome irl and is so simple & quick to make :) Other materials on this one includes 3ndypapir-paper, American Crafts felt-flower, adornit-letters (love these!) and staples :)

More gift-bags. This time I ran outta the paperbags, so I used squares of cellophane instead, wrapped w/ribbon from Søstrene Grene (awesome&dirt-cheap :p). The bags are kind of held together w/strips of Hambly transparencies stapled together at the ends…slapped Hambly kraft-stickers & adornit-letters on.

Look, a group-photo! :p

This time w/the Fancy Pants’ “Christmas Magic” line.

I’ve shared the card before – you can also find it here w/a diagram..(and if I was to be picky I’d mention that the matchbox&bag both have been shared on the FP-blog here. But I’m not picky ;p)

Really like how this one turned out. But the glitter….ugh. LOVE the look – hate the mess (is there any kind of glue that’s better than other for glitter??). Need I say I only made one w/glitter? :P Materials include Fancy Pants “Christmas Magic” paper & rubons, Maya Road snowflake chipboards, Pink Paislee glitter….mm….some inking too w/distress ink (Vintage photo & tea dye).

While I’m on the topic of Fancy Pants – also made this quick & simple garland that’s currently hanging across the walls above the fireplace. For more info on this one, feel free to check out this FP-post. Kinda love the buttons in between the paperpieces.

Look, more matchbboxes! This time w/3ndypapir-paper, lots of glimmermist and stuff (some of the tags has a coat of matte medium finish on them, love the subtle texture when you crackle the paper when the glue is dry).

Right!

I have a few layouts to share aswell, but this post is darn long already so I’ll save the layouts for tomorrow or something like that. Need to space out the scrappy stuff no?

*smile*

Thanks a lot for dropping by this busy Christmastime and have a lovely Christmas if you´re not around until then! :)

Right. *smirk*). Kjempekjekk gaveide til jul!! :D

Første kurs hos Familieminner i Ålesund er også fullt - men jeg holder også kurs på søndagen og mandagen og det er fortsatt muligheter til å være med her :) Sees snart? :)

Hey!

~~ MyStory (and a shitload of photos)~~

Posted by Ania On Monday, November 03, 2008 9 lovely comments
Kinda made Linda pull over and stop (THANKS!!!) just so I could stress-photograph this scenery before rushing to the store......:p

Some things I learned this weekend:
  • If the taxi hasn't shown up after 5 minutes, call. Don't wait until it's been 15 minutes. Especially not if you're gonna hit the airport...(I'm ok, it's all good, the taxi drove to the wrong place and left after 15 minutes (coudln't he have doublechecked the street#??? duh) - luckily hadn't gotten far when the central got hold of him so he returned to the right place picking me up :p)
  • Make sure you don't pack your craft-knife in your craft-bag that you put inside your coffin in case you have to swap bags because of overweight. (Luckily the nice lady at the security-port was all understandable and let me keep my Basic Grey precision file set despite them being more pointy than knitting-thingies which kinda isn't allowed either :p) And thank god it was just a cheap craft-knife from Clas Ohlson and not some expensive brand-knife either :p
  • I'm thankful for nice weather. Especially when I'm sitting in a very small plane for an hour. A small plane that like, shakes for nothing.
  • Norway really is a HUGE HUGE country with lots and lots of vast space where like no man lives at. (I knew that but every time I fly over the country I'm reminded of this fact. So.Much.Snow!)
  • Do doublecheck that your ticket's in your bag before leaving the store. Thank god for small airports with namelists and no real need for tickets :p
  • When you're gonna demostrate a technique - make sure you actually remember the technique yourself so you don't waste everybodys time having to fetch more cardstock cause you made almost everybody do the same mistake as you did while demoing *bluuuuuush!!!!!!!!*
  • Don't stay up laaaaaaate before leaving for a teaching-weekend. For some reason I was sososo exhausted all weekend so I was pretty much no fun in the evenings..wish I could have stayed until 3am and stuff for the crops buuuuut I needed my sleep!!! :p
  • I think people enjoyed my classes. At least the feedback's been nice so far - thank you so much for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed the classes! :D
I had such a lovely weekend at Papir i Hjertet in Porsgrunn despite the minor problems getting to the place ;p Lindas class was so inspirational and so great - I'm so totally in the mood of whippin out my gesso atm -- demoing Glimmer Mist is funfunfun (I *love* talking about Glimmer Mist haha) and my classes went well methinks *smile* Meeting Mona, Linda and Pelle again was lovely and great, helping out in the store with Therese and crap, I forgot her name again *blush* the brownhaired girl *blush* was fun (14 boxes opened & sorted & stacked to the store!!) and I'm so glad Monica and KjerstiKK was there too as that meant I had familiar & friendly faces among all the people kinda (and it was nice to get to know you more :) ), loved meeting new friends like Moni - so cool that she could do some sign-language, HegeALs Maia was like the kindest and cutest little angel ever (so sweet and so quiet letting mommy have her scrappingfun :p), Yasmin was cute and sweet and I look forward to my classes in Oslo with her working in the store & maybe even helping me+?? :) And yeah, just loved being there with all these ladies I *think* I know who might be but still am not quite sure ;p

Anyways. Shitload of photos - I'll just upload and if anyone prefers to remove anything lemme know ;p And oh, the photos are a bit mixed up from "all over" the weekend - cba to fix them atm :p Thanks to Linda helping me taking photos during my classes :)

And to the ladies (and man *wave Pelle*:D) of the weekend - thank you so much for the weekend and for being so nice w/me both during the weekend&the classes!!!! :D :D :D

Me and Pelle :)
We had a birthdaychild amongst us :)

Glimmermist!! (I think this is from saturday)
Yeap..saturday...layoutclass..
Lindas amazing cardclass!! :D
Lindas students :)
I totally forgot to ask for help photographing my Glimmer-Mist-demo, so I hijacked these nice ladies who stayed after the demo to stage some shots *blush* :D (Hey they stayed around for more GM-stuff soo why not take photos too :P)
Mona doing the random drawing for my minibook-class
Minibook-class...(Helle Alice to the left is an amazing glass-artist aswell- she made the jewellery Mona gave to me during the weekend! An owl nevertheless! :D)
I had to take a photo of me with the two Monicas of the weekend :)
Glimmer Mist dirt :)
Winner of the layout-class-drawing :)
Winner of the minibook-drawing :)
Linda, me and Mona :)
Me and Lula :)
The gorgeous little angel...
