Les Peaks, c'est chic

YES I know that title should really be Les Peaks, ce sont chics, but that extra syllable throws the rhythm off okay! And as a member of Rhythm Nation in good standing (last time I checked, anyway), it must be prioritized.

ANYWAY, if you are a listener of The Detective and the Log Lady, the weekly Twin Peaks podcast I co-host, then you know that we have recently finished Season 2 of the TV show. Wowzee wow! Time sure does fly.

If you're a-wonderin' what we'll be covering from here on out and when, here's a li'l schedule for you. I'm super pumped!!

PLEASE NOTE that when we cover The Missing Pieces on February 10th, we will also be covering The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer

That's right, The Secret Diary and The Secret History. We are reading for this podcast.

And if you are a Peaks noob like me, FYI The Missing Pieces is a feature-length assemblage of deleted scenes from Fire Walk With Me. It's available in the US (at least) on the Criterion Channel and as an extra on the Criterion FWWM disc. Maybe it's also available in other places! Following the Evolution of Horror socials might give you a tip, as folks like to help each other out with that kind of info.

As always, you can find the podcast on the EoH website or on whichever podcast platform tickles your cherry pie.

I LOVE TWIN PEAKS!

Believe it or not, I was watching all of box-set special features yesterday. I got about halfway through 'The Missing Pieces' before I had to go beddy-byes.

Stacie, I admit I am both thrilled and terrified to hear what you think of THE RE TURN. To say even a word more about it would be a spoiler.

R.I.P. David Lynch. A true original in a business full of clones.

I'm very excited about it! I am just going to do my best to judge what it IS and not what I WANT it to be, should those two states be leagues apart. If nothing else, I'm dying of curiosity over here.

Ooh, thanks for this. I wasn't sure from the end of the last episode if you were doing the Missing Pieces, and if you were doing it separately from FWWM. Guess I need to get on the books as well - they're the only part of the Peaks universe that'll be new to me.

I *just* re-watched Fire Walk With Me last week in prep for tomorrow's podcast, and it was the first time I'd seen it since watching The Return. BOY HOWDY. I am thrilled that you're both covering The Missing Pieces, too.

There are SO MANY beat points in The Return I cannot WAIT for you reach. This is one of the few things I have to look forward to this calendar year.

The day Lynch passed, I watched the documentary Lynch/Oz (which I recommend you don't watch until you're done with The Return; it has some pretty big spoilers) and I BAWLED LIKE A SMALL BEBE.

Thats for the warning about Lynch/Oz...it's been on my list for a minute but I'll definitely wait to check it out. I'm so excited for The Return. This whole journey has been so much better than I was anticipating, I love it.

I'm finally reading Laura's Secret Diary for the first time because of this podcast! It's a huge bummer so far (obviously), but makes me love Laura even more. (Jennifer Lynch... damn.) I'm happy to hear I won't be alone with this read.

As someone else mentioned, I am also very worried about you and everyone else watching The Return for the first time. It's like a trip to Mars, but I'm so excited to hear your takes.

It's pretty much a bummer all the way through, not an 'easy' read but I feel like it's really essential and it's easy to see how it heavily informed FWWM. I loved (?) it. Laura Palmer!!

I also remember having the Dale Cooper diaries as well, which came out at the same time. In there is a lot more about Windham Earle and Carolyne.

Stacie Ponder said...

I just saw a mention of the Dale Cooper book elsewhere! We don't have plans to cover it (as of yet, anyway) but I'll give it a read at some point regardless.

Thank you for giving me the excuse to finally digu out my copy of the two Mark Frost books, which I bought ages ago and then never read!

PS love love loved listening to you two go long on FWWM - I am shocked and awed by your ability to be in the slightest bit coherent about the massive whallop upside the head that that movie is. I did not like the movie the first couple of times I watched it! But now, after several more views of it and of the show itself - and especially in the wake of The Return - I bask in its brilliance. SHERYL FUCKING LEE!!! My god.

My bf and I were talking about how criminally under-used all of the Twin Peaks ladies ended up being -- Sherlyn Fenn is one of the most gorgeous women ever put in front of a camera and her career was a big ol belly flop, I don't get it. I mean BOXING HELENA happened sure, but I am a secret lover of that movie shh don't tell anybody.

But the worst crime is Lee's nonentity of a career post-Peaks. What a talent.

My dude, hang on to those books, the hard copies are pa-RICY!! I had to go digital, which I do not enjoy but that's what I get for being late to the party. I'm not sure if we'll cover the second volume (Dossier), but I'll be reading it. (Though Mike warned me definitely not to until we're finished with The Return.)

I am also confounded by the lack of opportunities for these women. Perhaps part of it was the times? It seems we barely know what to do with women like them even now, but back then it's like the only thing someone who looked like Fenn could get was, like, Two Moon Junction. It's a travesty. I'm hoping Sheryl Lee went back to theatre (I haven't been able to do a deep dive on ANYONE for fear of spoilers and it's driving me nuts!) because otherwise, good lord what missed opportunities for her AND for filmmakers. Mind you it's not too late, she's still rather young in the scheme of things.

This whole podcast started because EoH listeners voted Lee's FWWM performance as one of the best in horror...not only am I so fucking glad they did (because it got me onto this show finally) but lawd, they were RIGHT.

As for FWWM...I'm so glad I had the opportunity to discuss it at length and be sort of forced to think about it. I could see letting it lie with my kneejerk "I didn't love it" reaction, and that would have been a shame. With all the thinking I've done since that convo (and watching The Missing Pieces)...I am well on my way to being obsessed I think?

Sadly, I think Sheryl Lee's most notable post-PEAKS role was getting slapped around and called a "Bitch" for the entirety of JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES.

Stacie Ponder said...

That should qualify as a hate crime! Ugh I scrolled past that movie just a couple of nights ago...I've never seen it, so I thought "Should I...?" Then I saw James Woods listed and thought "I should not." I just can't deal with him anymore, and I guess I should be glad for it.

Sheryl Lee was also in MOTHER NIGHT (Keith Gordon's adaptation of the Vonnegut novel) and is glimpsed in WINTER'S BONE.

L. Rob Hubb said...

Yeah, JC's VAMPIRES was low-grade Carpenter when released; it's pretty much unwatchable now.

Stacie Ponder said...

Ooh, I've never seen Mother Night and I'm always ready to rewatch Winter's Bone so this is a good excuse. Never caught her before, but then she wasn't really on my radar.
