- Bounding the Global War on Terrorism by Jeffrey Record US Army War College, Strategic Studies Institute December 2003 - Dr. Jeffrey Record examines three features of the war on terrorism as currently defi ned and conducted: (1) the administration's postulation of the terrorist threat, (2) the scope and feasibility of U.S. war aims, and (3) the war's political, fi scal, and military sustainability. He fi nds that the war on terrorism-as opposed to the campaign against al-Qaeda-lacks strategic clarity, embraces unrealistic objectives, and may not be sustainable over the long haul. He calls for down-sizing the scope of the war on terrorism to reflect concrete U.S. security interests and the limits of American military power [PDF 372 Kb]

- Quartermaster Articles from the Field 04 November 2003 - Amateurs talk tactics. Professionals talk logistics. Nowhere is this axiom more true than here in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where logisticians performed a near-miracle by continually sustaining our combat forces despite long supply lines and an extreme shortage of supply and transportation units.
- Marine Corps Reserve Forces In Operation Iraqi Freedom Lessons Learned Marine Corps Combat Development Center November 2003 -- "Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) provided a rare opportunity to understand what works and what does not work in real conflict. To take advantage of this opportunity for learning, the Commandant created a Combat Assessment Team. Its mission was to systematically collect and objectively analyze combat data on critical warfighting issues. Because reserve forces played such a large role in this operation, the Reserve Affairs (RA) department at Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC), Manpower and Reserve Affairs (M&RA), created a reserve forces team to operate as an element of the overall combat assessment team to analyze reserve issues in depth." - Report of The Independent Panel on the Safety and Security of UN Personnel in Iraq The Independent Panel on the Safety and Security of the United Nations Personnel in Iraq 20 October 2003 -- "In the view of the Panel, the UN security management system failed in its mission to provide adequate security to UN staff in Iraq. The failure of UN management and staff to comply with standard security regulations and directives left the UN open and vulnerable to the type of attack that was perpetrated on 19 August 2003. In particular, the UN security system failed adequately to analyse and utilize information made available to the system on threats against UN staff and premises. The security awareness within the country team did not match the hostile environment. The observance and implementation of security regulations and procedures were sloppy and non-compliance with security rules commonplace. Adequate security arrangements may not have been able to prevent the attack against the Canal Hotel perimeter, but would certainly have minimized the vulnerability of the staff and premises and reduced the number of casualties caused by the attack." Fullerton USAFA Discovery Magazine August 2003 - "No Blood for Oil" became the rallying cry of anti-war activists worldwide.[2] Even well-respected news magazines propagated the theory that we were invading Iraq to gain access to her oil fields.[3] But there are far cheaper ways for the U.S. to get oil, and fighting simply to gain access to Iraq's oil is not an economically or morally sound reason for war.
