MTV Networks Latin America Wins Miami-Dade County's First Filming Grant For Nickelodeon's 'I Am Frankie' Season 2
Florida - The first production to gain funding under Miami-Dade County’s new film incentive program is a 20-episode MTV Networks Latin America television series continuation. The incentives are geared to fill a gap left when Florida dropped its own film incentives system, a change that sent filming activity and employment in the state into a tailspin.
County commissioners acting on a committee’s recommendation approved the maximum incentive, $100,000, under the new county program created last July to Nickelodeon's I Am Frankie Season 2.
The commission’s Economic Development and Tourism Committee recommended the grant award on Thursday, December 14, 2017 and commissioners in a late addition to their agenda approved the grant five days later.
A second MTV Networks Latin America series, 75 one-hour episodes of Club 57, was also recommended for approval and was to have come before the same county committee in December but before the meeting withdrew its application.
For the second season of I Am Frankie, the network, a subsidiary of Viacom, is projecting 50 production days for the half-hour show with a total expenditure of $5.4 million. The network proposes to produce 80% of the productions in Miami and employ 96 county residents, beginning this month, with principal photography starting Monday, March 12.
The show, Deputy Mayor Jack Osterholt told commissioners via memo, centers on Frankie Gaines, who looks perfectly normal “but harbors a big secret: She functions as a high-tech computer, complete with internet access, extensive memory and more.”
“There’s a lot of interest out there for 2018, especially from independent film producers. We urge them to apply” for the incentive program, county Office of Film and Entertainment chief Sandy Lighterman told Miami Today before the grant award.
Citing the loss of millions in revenues in the county “in the absence of state incentives,” Commissioner Sally Heyman proposed the program in June.
To be eligible, companies must spend at least $1 million, film at least 70% of the production here, and hire at least 80% of vendors and contractors locally to receive a tax rebate not to exceed $100,000 per production.
Each year between 2010 and 2016, when Florida had a strong incentive program, film, television, digital media and other productions spent $160 million to $406 million in Miami-Dade, Ms. Heyman’s ordinance said. But after refusing to add new funding to the incentive program for four consecutive years, the state Legislature allowed it to end in 2016.
The grant application for I Am Frankie season two said approval of the tax rebate would be a determining factor in whether to film here or elsewhere. It listed Los Angeles and Atlanta as competitors for the project. In their application, MTV Networks Latin America also said that I Am Frankie season two would be photographed in various locations around Miami-Dade County, if successful.
In I Am Frankie Season 2, Frankie (Alex Hook) finally is fitting in and exploring what it means to be human with the help of her best friend, Dayton (Nicole Alyse Nelson). Things quickly become complicated when a new android arrives at Sepulveda High and the world learns that androids exist. And when WARPA comes back with a new threat, Frankie must struggle to keep her true identity a secret and keep her friends and family safe.
The Club 57 series that withdrew its application had listed alternative locations in Colombia and Mexico. Its application cited an expenditure of more than $6.8 million, employing 110 Miami-Dade residents for the projected nine-month production period and producing 80% of the project in the area.
Both series will air on Nickelodeon: Filmed in the new state-of-the-art Viacom International Studios in Miami, I am Frankie was originally produced as Yo Soy Franky by Nickelodeon Latinoamérica in Colombia. The series is created by renowned Argentine writer Marcela Citterio. I am Frankie is produced by Paradiso Pictures and Nickelodeon Latin America, and airs on Nickelodeon channels worldwide; and Club 57 will be made for Nickelodeon Latinoamérica and Nickelodeon Brazil (Brasil).

Nickelodeon's 'I Am Frankie' Season 2 To Begin Production During Early 2018
Florida - A 20-episode MTV Networks Latin America television series continuation heads the line to become the first recipient in Miami-Dade County’s new film incentive program, approved in July 2017.
Nickelodeon's “I Am Frankie Season 2” is to come before the county commission’s Economic Development and Tourism Committee today (12/14) to seek the maximum incentive, $100,000. The county administration has recommended approval.
A second series by the same network. 75 one-hour episodes of Club 57, was also recommended for approval and was to have come before the same committee today but before the meeting requested a withdrawal of its application. The future of the project, which was slated to begin production in January 2018, is currently unknown.
For the second season of I Am Frankie, Nickelodeon, a subsidiary of Viacom, is projecting 50 production days for the half-hour show with a total expenditure of $5.4 million. The network proposes to produce 80% of the productions in Miami and employ 96 county residents, beginning in early January, with principal photography starting Monday, March 12.
The show, said Deputy Mayor Jack Osterholt in a memo to commissioners, centers on Frankie Gaines (Alex Hook), who looks like any other human girl “but harbors a big secret: She functions as a high-tech computer, complete with internet access, extensive memory and more.”
In Season 2, Frankie finally is fitting in and exploring what it means to be human with the help of her best friend, Dayton (Nicole Alyse Nelson). Things quickly become complicated when a new android arrives at Sepulveda High and the world learns that androids exist. And when WARPA comes back with a new threat, Frankie must struggle to keep her true identity a secret and keep her friends and family safe.
“There’s a lot of interest out there for 2018, especially from independent film producers. We urge them to apply” for the incentive program, county Office of Film and Enertainment chief Sandy Lighterman recently told Miami Today.
Citing the loss of millions in revenues in Miami-Dade “in the absence of state incentives,” county Commissioner Sally Heyman proposed the program in June. To be eligible, companies must spend at least $1 million, film at least 70% of the production here, and hire at least 80% of vendors and contractors locally to receive a tax rebate not to exceed $100,000 per production.
“Everyone wants this done,” Ms. Heyman told one commission meeting before the incentive was approved. “My colleagues and I kept waiting for the state to step up and entice the industry back, especially to South Florida.”
Each year between 2010 and 2016 – when Florida had a well-funded incentive program – film, television, digital media and other productions spent $160 million to $406 million in Miami-Dade, her ordinance said. In addition to local crew salaries, auxiliary spending benefitted hotels, restaurants, suppliers and other businesses.
A 2012 study by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau found that television shows and movies filmed in the region reached more than 1.5 billion viewers, for an advertising value of $405 billion.
That same year, a study by the Visit Florida tourism board revealed that 23% of people interviewed reported that seeing a movie or television series filmed in the state guided their decision to travel to Florida.
But after refusing to add new funding to the incentive program for four consecutive years, the Florida Legislature allowed it to end in 2016
“This program is intended to reverse Miami-Dade County’s fortunes by increasing the number of television, film and entertainment productions shot and produced in Miami-Dade County,” Ms. Heyman’s ordinance said. “It is anticipated that this will ultimately stop many of the remaining jobs supported by the industry from leaving to other locations, and also create new job opportunities.”
The application for I Am Frankie says approval of the tax rebate is a determining factor in whether to film in Miami or elsewhere. It lists Los Angeles and Atlanta as competitors for the project.

Nickelodeon Studios Construction Update - November 2015
Check in on the progress of the brand new Nickelodeon Animation Studio! Set to open in Fall 2016, the new Nickelodeon Studios will be a state of the art creative complex in the heart of Burbank, California...and best of all, it'll be open to the public!:
The new Nickelodeon Studios will be a state-of-the-art five-story glass structure that will unite the entire Nickelodeon family in a single facility and will be a hub for the entire animation industry.
As the new site will house both live action and Nicktoon productions, the studio will also officially change its name from Nickelodeon Animation Studio to simply Nickelodeon Studios.
The opening will coincide with Nickelodeon Animation's 25th anniversary in 2016 - the networks three original animated series, "Rugrats", "Doug" and "Ren & Stimpy" premiered on Sunday 11th August 1991 - and one of the goals for the new facility is to draw upon that history.
The creative campus is designed as an open and inviting space where employees feel the freedom and inspiration of an artists' retreat. Among the perks will be an on-site restaurant and coffee shop, a central courtyard with designated lecture space and a music room.
A Nickelodeon Studios app will include a rundown of events for the day including guest speakers, tours and screenings, and allow for easy communication and scheduling across all departments. Observing that creative ideas spring more frequently from casual interactions than forced meetings, Nickelodeon wants to seize the opportunity for greater collaboration and mobility between Nick’s various production arms.
More than just a base for Nickelodeon, Nickelodeon will open the studio up to the community with tours and programs targeted at aspiring animators, aficionados of the form and industry professionals.

Nickelodeon Animation Builds New Facility Just in Time for 25th Anniversary
Nickelodeon Animation Studio has big plans for the future.
With 31 titles currently in production, including live action, movies and shorts, spread out across various L.A. areas from Glendale to Santa Monica, the company aims to unite the entire Nick family in a single facility opening in Burbank next year. And the studio hopes the new state-of-the-art five-story glass structure will become a hub for the entire animation industry.
“This will be the first time all our creative teams are actually together,” says Russell Hicks, Nickelodeon’s president of content development and production. “Currently, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ is being done in Glendale, ‘Dora the Explorer’ in downtown Burbank and ‘SpongeBob’ is housed at the animation studio. It will be the first time these major brands and creative hubs come together under one roof. I think it’s going to create a very exciting time and help next generation of creativity.”
Since the new site will house both live action and toon productions, the studio will also officially change its name from Nickelodeon Animation Studio to simply Nickelodeon Studios.
The opening coincides with Nickelodeon Animation’s 25th anniversary in 2016 — its three original series, “Rugrats,” “Doug” and “Ren & Stimpy” bowed in 1991 — and one of the goals for the new facility is to draw upon that history.
“We will tell our story throughout the whole building,” Hicks says. “When you walk in you’ll see the first creators. Our philosophy is creator-driven content, they are the ones who have a vision and we wrap a studio around them to support that vision.”
The creative campus is designed as an open and inviting space where employees feel the freedom and inspiration of an artists’ retreat. Among the perks: an on-site restaurant and coffee shop, a central courtyard with designated lecture space and a music room.
A Nickelodeon Studios app will include a rundown of events for the day including guest speakers, tours and screenings, and allow for easy communication and scheduling across all departments. Noting that he’s observed that creative ideas spring more frequently from casual interactions than forced meetings, Hicks wants to seize the opportunity for greater collaboration and mobility between Nick’s various production arms.
“We’ve had a lot of success with people going into live action from animation and vice versa,” he says. “We just want to increase that. And increase our student outreach to our internships. To be housed in one area of Los Angeles is the ultimate goal.”
More than just a base for Nickelodeon, Hicks vows to open the studio up to the community with tours and programs targeted at aspiring animators, aficionados of the form and industry pros.
“We want to be a hub of the animation community in California, with lecture series and open houses,” he says. “No matter where you’re from, you can come to Nickelodeon and see a lecture series from one of the greats talking about what they’re doing.”

Dan Schneider Unveils "Henry Danger" Logo, Filming Location And Shooting Schedule
To help raise money for Children Mending Hearts, a charity dedicated to empowering disadvantaged youth through educational and arts programs that build empathy and global citizenry, Dan Schneider's production company Schneider's Bakery Productions, Inc. recently gave Children Mending Hearts a very special gift to auction on Charitybuzz for people to bid on - a trip for four people to visit the studio set where Dan will be filming Nickelodeon's upcoming brand-new crime-fighting comedy series "Henry Danger"!
As part of the auctions listing, Children Mending Hearts and Dan Schneider have unveiled new information about Dan's all-new sitcom, "Henry Danger", as well as the shows planned logo, above.
According to Children Mending Hearts, Nickelodeon Productions and Schneider's Bakery are due to start shooting "Henry Danger" at a location in Burbank, California, and that production for season one is currently scheduled to start in August 2014 and finish in November 2014.
Created and written by hitmaker Dan Schneider (iCarly, Sam & Cat) and Dana Olsen (George of the Jungle, Inspector Gadget), "Henry Danger" is a brand-new crime-fighting comedy features 13-year-old Henry (Jace Norman) who lands a part-time job as Danger Boy, a sidekick-in-training to super crime fighter Captain Man (Cooper Barnes, The Perfect Host). Their colorful adventures throw Henry's otherwise ordinary life absurdly out of balance, yet he must keep his new job a secret from his best friends Charlotte (Riele Downs, The Best Man Holiday) and Jasper (Sean Ryan Fox).
