Dreadful Situation of the poor.
--It is not generally known that there are between three and four thousand absolutely destitute persons, who have heretofore been enabled to exist only by the bounty of the General Government, now living in this city. The Government rations will be withdrawn to-day, and unless relief come instantly, the consequences must be such as humanity shudders to think of. We implore our fellow-citizens to come at once to the rescue. Let a town meeting be instantly called. Could not the Legislature do something for their unhappy fellow-citizens?
