The great Government sale of railroad material.

--Yesterday the extensive sale of railroad material, iron, lumber, tools, &c., was commenced at the shops near the Orange and Alexandria depot, in Alexandria, at which there was a large attendance of the leading railroad men of the country, manufacturers, capitalists and others. This is the largest Government sale of the class yet entered upon, and it is expected will yield over half a million of dollars. The bidding yesterday was spirited, and good prices were obtained; indeed, some thought nearly full musket value. The stationary engines, some in very good order, brought from six hundred dollars to one thousand three hundred dollars, stoves from fifteen dollars to thirty dollars, bars from fifteen to eighteen cents per pound, rope about ten cents per pound. Much of the stock remains to be sold, and the sale will probably continue at least a week. There yet remains to be sold two and a half million feet of timber, a number of cars, a large quantity of railroad iron, &c., besides a quantity of office furniture.--Washington Star.
