Unlawful shooting.
--A white fellow calling himself Augustus Smith, was arraigned before the Mayor on Saturday last for having, on Friday night, attempted to take the life of Charles H. Epps, by discharging sundry pistol balls in the direction of his person while he was passing along Second street. As the parties were strangers, and no cause had been given for the commission of the outrage, it is thought that the offender mistook Epps for another man.--The recipient of the strange salute had received two balls through the side of his coat, and his assailant was in the act of giving him another broadside, when Mr. Epps advanced and seized the would-be- assassin and dispossessed him of his pistol, when, with other assistance, he was safely landed in the upper Station House. The felonious intent being apparent, the Mayor committed Smith for indictment by the Hustings Court grand jury.
