The Washington correspondent of the New York Herald says:‘ "It is thought that troops will have to be kept in Washington always now, even if the present crisis passes. This secession business has kept Washington back ten years, and people cannot feel the same safety as before the reports that the Capitol was to be seized. A lot of columns and heavy masses of stone, lying near the White House, and to be used on the Treasury building, attracted the notice of Government officers, for they would make excellent barricades in case of attack, and some people are foolish enough to expect one even yet."
