Those writers who wish to be read must introduce stories and fables, which are as popular as games and contests. This accounts for the popularity of Homer and the Tragedians. Homer told tales of the battles of gods and heroes, and the Tragedians brought actual contests before the eyes of their audience. The writer who can only offer good advice cannot compete with such attractions.
