δρῶσαν: the partic. expresses the leading idea (‘if thou wouldest know, thou must act’): cp. O. C.1038 n.— γνῶμα, a means of judging, a test: Her.7. 52“Ἴωνας...τῶν ἔχομεν γνῶμα μέγιστον”. (In poetry the word sometimes means merely ‘judgment,’ ‘opinion’: Aesch. Ag.1352, Eur. Her.407.)—The Chorus do not say that she ought to make the experiment; but only that, until she does so, she can have no certainty.
