"I like farming. It provides us with income, it has helped us to open a business and make good progress in life. The biggest issues we are facing here are related to climate change." -Ramesh Rajput, Small-scale Soy Farmer in India 👨🌾 👩🌾 Small-scale farmers – and by extension all of us – depend heavily on natural resources, including fertile soil, clean water, and diverse ecosystems that foster pollinators and natural pest control. Farming activities can take a toll on the environment, and small-scale farmers feel responsible for preserving it. Our #SmallFarmerAtlas found that more than half (57%) of the 10K farmers surveyed felt ill-prepared to deal with a changing climate. 3 out of 5 expressed serious concerns with the quality of soil and access to water. Concerns that continue today as we face the hottest year on record. Dig into the details on the 8 commodities covered & find out how farmers are working to balance their needs with nature. Angélica Paz has dedicated much of her career to supporting #coffee producers in #Honduras. Full of energy and optimism, in this interview - when she worked at the coffee cooperative Las Capucas, in close collaboration with Solidaridad and Fairfood under the RECLAIM Sustainability! programme - Angélica tells us about this transformative work. Solidaridad Latinoamérica This ranges from supporting producers to adopt technological innovations and improving the #traceability of coffee in the value chain, to making great strides towards gender equality and the #empowerment of women coffee growers. 🤠 🇧🇷 Small-scale ranchers in Pará, Brazil, are changing their approach to pasture opting for low-carbon practices that improve soil health, boost productivity & reduce pressure to expand. "With rotational grazing, we can preserve the areas we have, and produce more in the areas that are already open," says Alaion Souza, a rancher from the Tuerê settlement, in the Transamazônica region of Pará, who is taking part in the #AmazoniaConnect initiative. Technical assistance tailored to farmers’ needs via Fundação Solidaridad is helping increase adoption of low-carbon practices that contribute to climate action. We’re currently working with 700 small-scale cattle ranching families in the municipalities of Novo Repartimento, Anapu and Pacajá with more than 23,000 hectares covered by good agricultural practices. Check out this short film with results from the initiative's first year: https://lnkd.in/gyuifR7q Amazonia Connect is a partnership between USAID, Solidaridad Network, Earth Innovation Institute, National Wildlife Federation and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Together with USAID’s Amazon Regional Environment Program, producers, companies, local governments and financial institutions, the initiative promotes and scales low-carbon agricultural production to improve biodiversity conservation and climate resilience in Brazil, Colombia and Peru. *** #AREP #AmazoniaConnect #SustainableLivestock #SmallScaleRanching

⏰ The clock is ticking for businesses to comply with the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR). But what about the millions of small-scale farmers who are at the heart of global supply chains? The Inclusive Regional Dialogues on EUDR is a new initiative that aims to bring together small-scale producers and other stakeholders in soy and livestock supply chains to discuss how to make a fair transition towards EUDR compliance. The project envisions multi sectoral meetings in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay to collaborate on responses to the EUDR with the support of the European Union, the Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. A more sustainable and equitable future relies on traceability, transparency and responsible practices to protect forests and the livelihoods of small producers. 🇿🇲 Taking strides towards sustainable cattle farming in Zambia! 🐄 Livestock farming is vital for communities in Zambia's Southern Province, but challenges with access to sufficient water and unsafe pasture lands pose a threat to many. Solidaridad Southern Africa's Hooves for Sustainability project tackles these issues head-on. A recent stakeholder meeting gathered farmers, government officials, and NGOs to join in a collaborative effort to create a restructured grazing plan that can prevent livestock drowning and promote better land use. The project, funded by the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, aims to reach 2,000 livestock producers fostering collaboration and sustainable practices across the region. 🌳🇵🇪High in the Peruvian Andes, the Amazon River begins its long journey to the Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon region of Peru is a global biodiversity hotspot covering 60% of the country’s total land area. Responsible stewardship of this invaluable resource is critical to ensuring a vibrant future for the entire region. With Amazonia Connect, we align our efforts with the interests of all actors to work towards an environment that supports local livelihoods, protects the region's vast biodiversity, and advances global climate action. Amazonia Connect is focused on the coffee supply chain in the department of San Martin and oil palm in Ucayali. The activity utilizes a multi-faceted strategy that promotes deforestation-free and low-carbon production practices among coffee and oil palm producers, and challenges gender and social norms that hinder rural development. #FridayPhoto: On a recent trip to India, Executive Director Andre de Freitas turned the camera on himself, and the team from Solidaridad Asia and farmers at the Nico Roozen Centre of Excellence for Regenerative Agriculture in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh. He captured the infectious energy at the gathering, and met farmers, like Mahesh Patel, who shared their experience of adopting regenerative farming. The practices are helping farmers reduce their spending on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides — replacing them to a large extent with vermicompost and biopesticides — and restores the quality of their soil. Andre was impressed by the Centre’s impact: “Regenerative agriculture isn’t just a trend, but a necessity for sustainable food systems worldwide. It holds the potential to restore ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and improve the livelihoods of farmers, ensuring food security for future generations.” Read more about regenerative agriculture here: https://lnkd.in/dW3HGXzP **** #RegenerativeAgriculture #Regenerative #SustainableAgriculture #SmallScaleFarming #SmallScaleAgriculture #Vermicompost Shatadru Chattopadhayay, Dr.Suresh Motwani

Traders are an important part of artisanal & small-scale gold mining (ASM) supply chains, but the informality of the sector makes their work difficult. We're proud to partner with IMPACT & Solidaridad North America on this work to understand ASM gold supply chains. Read more below!
In Côte d’Ivoire, traders play a crucial role in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASM) ecosystem, providing financing, equipment, and essential goods to mining communities. Yet, they often struggle within a complex and informal market landscape. Recognizing the role of traders in the ASM gold supply chain, IMPACT and Solidaridad Network, through the Scaling Up project funded by the European Partnership for Responsible MineralsEPRM RVO, are engaging traders to explore what truly motivates them, including: 👉 Are traders motivated to sell into formal, legal international supply chains? 👉 How willing are they to support miners in meeting the expectations of international buyers around due diligence and responsible production? To enhance traders' involvement in responsible sourcing, it is essential to offer clear incentives that align with their operational realities and economic interests. Read more ⬇️
