Our #RECLAIMSustainability! Tea project has initiated discussions with the Tea Board of Kenya to establish an Information Management System for sector traceability. The information system is envisaged to enhance transparency and accountability across the value chain, contributing to more sustainable practices and fair value, especially for smallholder tea farmers. The Women in Tea Uganda ., recently secured a partnership with PUM Netherlands to drive #economicempowerment for women in the sector through value addition and #marketaccess. The partnership comes after the Association's participation in the #HarvestMoneyExpo in Kampala earlier this year, where they forged crucial connections. In a recent joint visit to tea estates in Zombo, Kanungu, and Bushenyi districts, Eva van den Brink, the PUM consultant and Nyabuhara Julian Rugyereza., the Association Chairperson identified critical needs, including tea processing facilities, fairer payment structures, and value addition training. PUM’s support will facilitate the acquisition of tea processing machines, access to advanced training, and markets, and financial empowerment through a women-led tea #SACCO. This partnership will also contribute to the #sustainability of our #RECLAIMSustainability! Tea project outcomes - which ends in 2025. From #local workshops to #global exhibitions, Gerald's journey from a small-scale farmer to a successful coffee entrepreneur highlights the power of digital pathways. Today, he produces high-quality coffee products, has expanded his market reach, and even engages with decision-makers, all thanks to the digital empowerment facilitated by Solidaridad. Creating sustainable palm oil value chains through credible global standards! Under the National Oil Palm Project, funded by the Government of Uganda with support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Solidaridad has launched a four-days capacity-building training for selected oil palm farmers on Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). This training, aimed at Trainers of Trainers (TOTs), focuses on the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil standards for independent smallholders and best management practices for oil palm cultivation. Through this initiative, farmers will gain critical knowledge on minimizing the environmental and social impact of their operations. The training is focusing on #RSPO impact areas including prosperity (competitive, resilient and sustainable sector), people (sustainable livelihoods and poverty reduction. Nankanja Teddy, a smallholder oil palm farmer from Nairambi Sub County in Buvuma District, Uganda, shared her thoughts: "Once this training is cascaded to smallholder farmers, it will significantly enhance their knowledge and open up more opportunities, ultimately benefiting the environment." Solidaridad has also provided comprehensive training manuals and workbooks to the TOTs to ensure effective knowledge transfer to fellow farmers. The project will support over 10,000 farmers to attain #RSPO independent small holder standard and offer them a chance of the credits related to #RSPO. #Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) provides livelihoods for millions of people worldwide. Despite its economic importance, the sector is fraught with numerous health risks and challenges. Meet Eunice Atieno, a small-scale artisanal miner from Migori, Kenya, who narrates the challenges she and her spouse have experienced as mine site workers.
