From Talk to Transformation: Proforest's Impact in Africa Action speaks louder than words, and at Proforest, we're walking the walk. In Africa last year, we partnered with businesses to turn sustainability commitments into tangible results. Here's a glimpse of our impact: 1.Responsible Sourcing: Supported South African suppliers in sugar, palm, shea, and rice, with exciting collaborations on the horizon for 2 sugar mills! 2.Environmental & Social Due Diligence: Conducted thorough audits for responsible palm, rubber, and jatropha plantations across Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d'Ivoire. 3.Forest Restoration & Livelihoods: Replanted 80ha in Ghana's Asutifi South, distributed 50,000 trees, built community infrastructure, and supported farmers with a revolving loan fund - Supported by Walmart Foundation, we are making a real difference. 4. Collaboration Power: Joined forces with authorities, communities, and organizations like WCF, GIZ, and Impactum to create a sustainable plan impacting 1 million people across 6 communities! 🌍 Honoured to have interacted with World Food Programme's Executive Director, Cindy McCain, during her official visit to Zambia. In light of the increasing frequency and intensity of climate shocks, such as the recent drought that affected nearly 10 million people in Zambia, the collaboration between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the WFP is more critical than ever. Following the signing of a joint global action plan in March 2024, IFAD and WFP are working together to support countries facing fragile contexts, economic shocks, and extreme weather. This partnership aims to leverage the strengths and expertise of both organizations to enhance resilience in vulnerable environments and improve food security for those who need it most. In Zambia, IFAD and WFP have collaborated on the design and rollout of a livestock weather index insurance, increasing access to insurance for 5,000 farmers under the IFAD-funded Enhanced Smallholder Livestock Investment Programme (E-SLIP). Exciting News: Promoting Climate Resilient Food Security in Jubbaland 🌱 Today, we want to share with you our most recent project of the Madiba Consulting Unit. 🌍🌾 We are thrilled to share updates on our project addressing the pressing humanitarian crisis in Somalia's Jubbaland state. The ongoing drought, exacerbated by climate change, economic challenges, and security issues, has left 8 million people food insecure, with a looming risk of famine in 2023. 🌾 Building on the success of our previous initiative, sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ, our new project focuses on enhancing resilience in vulnerable communities. The peri-urban region around Kismayo is our target, where over a million people displaced by the drought are seeking refuge, and facing challenges in accessing basic services. 🚀 The project's three main action areas include: 1️⃣ Promoting climate- and disaster-resilient food production 2️⃣ Improving access to food in peri-urban areas 3️⃣ Establishing a sustainable drinking water supply in Kismayo 🤝 We're committed to engaging with the local population, with a special focus on women and women-headed households, along with other vulnerable groups. Success relies on comprehensive analyses of agricultural and climate contexts, providing recommendations for climate-resilient production. 🌍 Exciting Developments for Namibia's Future! 🌍 Today Namibia presented its Country Strategic Plan (CSP) for Namibia 2025-2029 at the Informal Consultation of the Executive Board -World Food Programme. 1️⃣ Alignment with Regional Strategy: This CSP is aligned with WFPs regional strategy in Southern Africa. It positions WFP as a key enabler, strengthening systems that govern food security, social protection, and emergency preparedness. The strong collaboration with the government and stakeholders ensures that this CSP aligns with national priorities and truly meets community needs. 2️⃣ Addressing the Hunger Crisis: The effects of El Niño will continue to impact the hunger crisis until the next harvest season in April/May 2025 across Southern Africa. We commend the Government of Namibia for rallying the international community against what is termed the worst drought in a century. 3️⃣ Focus on Climate Resilience: As a semi-arid country with the lowest average rainfall in Southern Africa, Namibia is particularly vulnerable. This underscores the importance of this CSP’s focus on promoting regenerative agronomic practices and building climate-resilient food systems in close collaboration with the government. 4️⃣ Strengthening Strategic Partnerships: The country office had made significant  efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships in Namibia to diversify funding and enhance impact through innovative financing and joint programming. In Tanzania, a number of local companies are committed to ending hunger and malnutrition in their country. These companies - primarily through their core business operations - have put in place projects to help achieve SDG 2 within their communities. ➡ afco investment provides a range of bio-fortified flours that can be used to make porridges rich in the many vitamins, minerals and nutrients that young children and nursing mothers need. ➡ Emeci Technologies works with farmers to plant, grow and sell high-quality seeds in Tanzania. ➡ Kinshaga Food Products produces nutritious fruits-infused biscuits using raw materials sourced from locally based smallholder farmers. ➡ Mamaland Mushroom Farms produces mushrooms and mushroom based products to help alleviate malnutrition. ➡ Nasinya Dairy processes raw milk collected from pastoralist farmers in remote areas of Tanzania in order to make cheeses, butter, yoghurt, and mtindi (fermented milk) which are subsequently sold in hotels, local shops, and restaurants. ➡ Rieta AgroSciences Tanzania Ltd produces and distributes seeds, agrochemicals, animal feed and farm tools. #FridayPhoto 🇿🇲 : A great image from the launch of Hooves for Sustainability, an effort from Solidaridad Southern Africa to revitalize the livestock sector in Zambia’s Southern Province. 42% of the population in Zambia is under 14 years of age. Providing healthy, local food for a growing population is important for communities there. Though 80% of Zambia's meat comes from smallholder farmers, they face threats from degraded grasslands and decreasing productivity. The Hooves for Sustainability programme will help scale up sustainable practices that improve pasture & disease management, soil fertility, and carbon sequestration. The goal is to increase productivity by at least 80%, increase income by at least 30%, and improve access to finance and productive assets for programme participants.
