Face '83: New Edition

One last push, and we can forget we ever eased the lid off the box marked 'Face best-of 1983'. If you've remained aloof so far, the general idea was I'd post a load of videos from 1983 and try and slap a veneer of science over judging if the records The Face magazine thought would be historic markers for the year actually were as timeless as they'd hoped.

At the moment, The Face has scored 22 good choices; the harsh judgement of history has won 17 rounds.

Next up is New Edition:

New Edition, famously, launched the careers of Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Cyrus Vance, Andrew Bridger MP, The Backstreet Boys and that bloke with the head like an egg off this year's Apprentice.

What's really scary about this band is not that they were so young, nor that they were so obviously the first serious attempt to clone and update the Jackson Five model, but that by the time of Candy Girl, they'd been going for five years already.

Five years.

After their first tour, following this massive hit, the boys made $1.87 each.

To be fair, their management did cut them a cheque for this amount - they didn't just get a letter telling them they'd receive a payment once their earnings had reached $25 - but it's all a bit disgusting.

This track, then, isn't young people having fun. It's kids being ripped off.

The Face 22; History 18.

[Part of The Face's best recordings of 1983]

Gordon in the morning: Giggling at the bereaved

How awful it must be for the friends and relatives of Whitney Houston, suffering from not just the weight of their loss, but also worrying about her daughter, Bobbi. Bobbi's father, Bobby Brown, has flown to be with his daughter as she remains in hospital, apparently under suicide watch.

So why does Gordon think it's time for 'witty' puns?

Presumably they'd had a "Brown bread" headline ready to roll if the worst happened.

Brown: It was all Whitney's fault

There have been some self-serving autobiographies, but Bobby Brown's book is so full of self-service it's like a restaurant with a buffet bar, a salad cart, and a help-yourself desert trolley that also expects you to bus your own table:

In a new book, Brown, best known now for his frequent run-ins with the law rather than his onetime Grammy-winning music career, writes that Houston fueled his appetite for drugs and used him to tidy up her image.

Well, if that was the plan, that worked really well, didn't it?

Brown insists that he never used cocaine before he got together with Whitney, and that Whitney used him to try and dampen down stories that she was gay. Yes, even his tell-all book makes him sound like a Family Dollar Ike Turner.

According to E!, Brown also tells stories against himself:
According to the tome's blurb copy, it notes he dated Janet Jackson and Madonna, "sle[pt] with thousands of women," and nearly died from a drug overdose. For boy-band completists, it promises to reveal "the real reason he left New Edition." And for fans of author and music-video star Karrine "Superhead" Steffans, it offers this critique: "Yes, I've spent several nights at her house," Brown writes. "But she was only good for what her nickname stood for."

It does sound as if every segment is going to end "needless to say, I had the last laugh."

Bobby Brown: there's only fake reality left

Bobby Brown goes country and western? Really?

Why would he do that?

He tells MTV he wanted the challenge:

"My dad was a big country-music fan, but I felt it was something I could conquer," said Brown, who can tell you stories about hanging out in Nashville "every other weekend." "I've been through R&B and rap, television, movies. It just brings it all together, country music."

Except, of course, this is less to do with a desire to make a country album, and everything to do with having to accept any humiliating job offer that comes his way. In short, some godforsaken reality country music show. Genre swap, perhaps:
He's one of seven celebrities to hook up with Big & Rich's John Rich for the Country Music Television reality show "Gone Country." The contestants, including Sisqo, Twisted Sister's Dee Snider and Julio Iglesias Jr., are competing to be the next big country star.

There's apparently one of the Brady Bunch in there, too. But then there probably would have to be, wouldn't there?

Still, the attention gives Brown a chance to talk about his recent heart attack:
"I did not have a heart attack. No. I went to the hospital, they pushed my stomach, I farted, then they sent me home."

You'd have to wonder at a man who is now so damaged he requires medical intervention to part his sphincter, wouldn't you?

Brown appeals to cop's discretion; fails

That Bobby Brown has been charged after being caught with a bunch of cocaine is hardly surprising - indeed, many American police stations keep to hand a rap sheet with Brown's name and 'cited for: cocaine possession' pre-printed.

But we do salute Brown's attempt to keep his powdery nose out of trouble:

According to Trooper Eric Benson, cops were called to the hotel shortly after midnight on December 1 to attend to a disturbance, and were directed to Brown, who was waiting in his car outside the building.

Upon questioning, Brown was found to be in possession of cocaine, but attempted to convince the trooper to "use discretion" and not charge him for the drugs.

We're not quite sure why Brown would assume that the trooper would think 'yes, why should I make a fuss about this one? Why, it would get Mr Brown into trouble'.

Brown, Houston lose interest in own divorce

What if you appealed a legal decision and nobody was there to hear it? Attempts to revise a change in the terms of the crackhead divorce between Whitney and Bobby Brown came to nothing when neither party, nor any lawyers, bothered to show up. It's most surprising Brown wasn't there, as he'd requested the chance to call for a revision in the first place, but then as the mothers of Brown's kids would attest, he's quite a record for not being around.

Brown's heart appears, wobbles

Crack-daddy Bobby Brown has gone off to hospital after suffering a heart attack scare. He was allowed home after a doctor explained that the thing he was feeling in his chest was the seat of love and emotion and passion, and not some alien beast or something.

Bobby Brown suddenly wants to be Father Of The Year

Thus far, Bobby Brown appears to have spent longer in prison for unpaid child support than he actually has under the same roof as any of his children, so it's something of a surprise to discover he's suddenly seeking custody of Bobbin Kristin Brown, his daughter with Whitney Houston.

And it is sudden - Brown hadn't contested the couple's divorce, which was made final in April. This gave custody to Houston. So why the sudden change of heart?

Apparently, Brown is trying to convince the court he wasn't aware of the divorce proceedings:

Phillips said Brown believed the pair were working on their marriage and that Houston had told him not to worry about the divorce proceedings. She said the two had made an agreement.

"Who is he going to rely on the most?" Phillips said. "The woman he loves. He thinks they're working on their marriage."

Now, it might be that Brown is telling the truth - that he didn't bother about any of the legal notices saying 'you are being divorced by your wife' because she was saying 'don't worry, petal': in which case, he's probably not the sort of person who should be left in charge of a picnic table, never mind a teenage girl. Or he's just lying and that's the best reason he can come up with for not having responded earlier - which is even weaker.

Wonderfully, though, Brown has actually asked for the divorce to be set aside, and then reworked. This leaves the judge the power to simply undivorce the couple, and throw them back into their marriage. That, as my great-grandmother apparently would say, will larn 'em.

Brown in fear of Bin Laden

Despite Bin Laden probably being dead, and if he isn't, being hooked up to cranky old dialysis machine in some sort of cave somewhere, Bobby Brown is in fear of Osama, god help us, because of the claim that OBL loves Whintey Houston:

Come on, if anyone is threatened by al-Qaeda they’d take it seriously. I figure if Bin Laden wants me, and everybody is looking for him, it won’t happen. But if he wants to try and find me for something so stupid, then he can if he wants. I have to leave it in the hands of a higher power.”

Brown seems to have missed that if Bin Laden really wanted to get close to Whitney, he'd have an open run at her, what with Houston filing for divorce. And that if Osama did fancy a romp with Whitney, the existence of Bobby Brown might prove to be less of a stumbling block than his part in the nasty deaths of thousands of people.

Brown: I'm the Daddy

Having clarified yesterday that Bobby Brown has no sense of humour when it comes to suggestions of even the mildest boy-on-boy action, we today discover that he does like a good laugh, nevertheless.

Despite his seemingly constant periods spent in jail for falling down on fatherhood when it requires little more than sending off a cheque every month, Bobby is suing Whitney to get more access to their daughter, Bobbi Kris.

Brown is keen to beat down the suggestion that he's a deadbeat dad. Although his reasons for seeking a change in the terms of the custody agreement don't entirely inspire confidence:

After Whitney and I separated, I had nowhere to go and very little money to live on. I was, for all intents and purposes, homeless." That's why he failed to respond to Whitney's petition for custody in time, and why she was ultimately deemed the primary parent.

Yes, his case is "sorry I didn't say anything at the time, but I was living like some sort of tramp in a lay-by". That'll work.

Bobby Brown: Not Humpin' Around

You'd have thought that a man who signed up to spend twenty four hours with Jamie Campbell for an ITV programme had no standards at all. But it turns out Bobby Brown does have a line he won't cross, after all.

He doesn't hold with any of that gay stuff.

Campbell, it seems, made a remark about putting "sex moves" on Brown. Brown didn't take it well:

“What the fuck do you mean, sex moves? Are you gay? On live TV I will fuck you up.”

(It isn't live TV, which has given ITV a chance to circulate some preppublicity gold.)
“You should have laughed, because I didn’t laugh. Do you know how I could fuck you up in here? Do you know that? Are you gay? I think you’re less of a man for not answering.”

“You know what would be more of a joke? If the 24 hours ended right now. I will whoop your ass in here, thoroughly.

Then Bobby seemed to remember that, by not getting a desperately needed cheque signed by Michael Grade, the joke might wind up being on him, so he stayed.

Uncoupled

No more will the phrase "Whitney Houston's husband has been remanded in custody" drip from journalists keyboards. Not because Bobby Brown has cleaned up his act, but because the divorce has finally come through.

Whitney gets custody of the daughter; it's not known under the deal if the couple will continue to share a dealer.

Thursday, April 05, 2007

That must have called for judgement of Solomon

As a judge tidies up after the Houston-Brown divorce, the question of what to do with child came up on the to-do list.

Presumably a coin needed to be tossed to decide the lesser of two evils. Whitney's come out on top:

A tearful Houston told the court that her estranged husband is "unreliable".

Whereas, of course, you can rely on Whitney. Not entirely sure you'd trust her, but... boy, you can rely on her.

Brown's saviours

We'd not hold our breath if we were WIHT - they apparently stumped up the cash to get Bobby Brown's ass out of jail, thinking they'd get something in return:

In a statement, the station says the deal was brokered by morning deejay Kane and Brown's lawyers. Kane says Brown will work at Hot 99.5 for a week, beginning Monday, discussing his trangressions onair and promoting the station off.

"Bobby deserves a clean slate," said Kane. "He has agreed to be a positive role model for the Washington, D.C., community and we look forward to welcoming Bobby to the staff at Hot 99.5. This is something positive, and while he is in town with us, we will be giving back to the community."

Except, of course, he's doing the job because you've paid his child support for him. Assuming he turns up - he's not entirely known for keeping to his side of the deal.

Brown and out

Having sent someone out to sell the CD machine and raise a few quid, Bobby Brown has paid off his child support and been set free.

His lawyer has basically admitted that Brown is a nobody stuck with a somebody's bills:

"Although this agreement was put in place when he was Bobby Brown the star, this agreement is being enforced when he is not always able to find work," [Phaedra] Parks told The Associated Press. "He hasn't made an album in quite some years."

You can almost hear her thinking "I'd better get my bill in quick."

Bobby Brown arrested again

Bobby Brown has been arrested - yes, again - for failing to provide child support. Ironically, the arrest came while he was offering support for his child during a cheerleader contest in Canton, Massachusetts.

(How does one show support during a cheerleader contest? Do you have to form a football team to stand at the side to offer encouragement? Or do cheerleaders have other cheerleaders to lead the cheers for them?)

Soulobit: James Brown

We've just heard, further to our posting earlier, that James Brown has died.

Brown was born in South Carolina in 1933 into extreme poverty - at the age of seven he was living in an Atlanta brothel, helping make money through shoeshine and busking.

At the age of 16 he had his first serious run-in with the law when he was caught stealing a car, a crime that saw him spend three years inside. He would go on to be dogged by combinations of cars and cops, winding up inside again for an incident when he fired on police during a car chase. Other blots on his record included an unacceptable habit of spousal abuse, and signing up to Reagan's War on Drugs, a battle he appeared to fight undercover, behind (and doing) enemy lines.

On release from prison, he developed the musical act he'd been working on inside into a gospel revue. His big breakthrough came with 1956's Please Please Please, his first million seller - albeit one for which he was only paid $150. A combination of onstage flair and a determined attitude (it wasn't unusual for "the hardest working man in showbusiness" to turn in 350 gigs in a year) saw him build a steady fanbase and run up a string of hits.

While his temper, attitude towards women and willing embrace of hypocrisy can't be overlooked, it's equally impossible to take away his achievements both as a singer and a businessman. Having said that, the Grammy committee did do their best, never acknowledging Brown until he'd provided Living In America for one of the Rocky soundtracks. Papa's Got A New Bag not worthy of a Grammy; saccharine over-emotive flag-flying bollocks for a pumped-up B-movie is.

James Brown spawned anecdotes as fast as he spawned legal actions. His manager floated a rumour that Brown was planning a sexchange to be able to marry singer Bobby Byrd; he was well-known for fining band members who turned up late for rehearsals. In 1992, he was prematurely obituarised by a TV news broadcast. And, apparently, his eyebrows were tattooed on.

Brown is probably the definitive mess of contradictions: repeatedly in trouble with the law, but in 1968, Brown's Boston gig was given an unexpected live nationwide broadcast as an attempt to calm down the atmosphere following the murder of Martin Luther King. And for every run-in over unpaid tax bills, there was a charitable initiative or sponsorship of food stamps for the poor. A shrewd businessman (he owned radio stations and car dealerships) he also made some astonishingly poor decisions.

But most of all: he was the Godfather of Soul.

Brown beat prostate cancer in 2004; severe pneumonia finally took him at 1.45 on Christmas Day morning.

Blige: I ate Billboard, now I'm coming for the Grammys

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas comes another great American ritual: The Grammy Nominations. Still seen by some as a reward for musical excellence, the shortlist of names for the key prizes are usually little more than what you'd get if you shook a Clear Channel playlist by the neck.

British hopes are being led this year by - oh, the national shame - James Blunt and Corinne Bailey Rae, although (perhaps more surprisingly) Pet Shop Boys, Arctic Monkeys and Goldfrapp have also at least postioned themselves for consideration in a couple of categories. Imogen Heap is in with a shout for best new singer, although there is a sense that this list has been scraping around this year - Carrie Underwood, anybody?

The biggest pre-winner winner is Mary J Blige, fresh from ordering a U-Haul for her nine Billboard prizes. She's being considered for eight; the Red Hot Chili Peppers are up for six and - in a further blow to George Bush following the loss of both houses, Rumsfeld and Bolton - the Dixie Chicks have been offered the prospect of five prizes.

As ever, the full list of nominations is somewhat long; if you don't want to scroll, you can leap to the bottom:
