Radio Academy Awards: Jamie Cullum is the best music show in the UK

The Radio Academy Awards - which used to be known as the Sonys - were announced last night. Is there any other awards show where Nick Clegg and Danny Baker would walk away carry prizes?

Zane Lowe took best music broadcaster - or at least he shouted at the panel until they gave it to him; more interestingly, in a year when Radio 4 didn't win very much, it was the speech network who picked up best music feature (for an episode of the Soul Music series).

But, really, let's just give it up to University Radio Bath, and their bronze prize recognising their Responsive Radio and Unified Station Management.

No, I don't, either.

BBC Tees, BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Radio 2 are the stations of year in order of increasing size.

Gordon in the morning: Robbie Williams is not happy

1990s pop star Robbie Williams - check your grandma's Wikipedia edits if you don't recognise the name - has finally joined Status Quo and Cliff Richard in the day room to moan about the young people at Radio One:

He branded the Breakfast Show host a “b******” for not playing his tracks – because the singer’s too old.

During his set at London’s Grosvenor House, Robbie said: “I did the Brits and started singing, ‘Hey-ho, here we go’ to a bunch of industry people and they were all just like, ‘F*** off, you’re fat and you’re old. And Radio 1 don’t play you no more – you’re fat and you’re old’.”
He then looked at Nick and said: “Isn’t that right Nick, you b******?”
It would seem his beef would be more with his peers rather than Radio One itself, but... oh, hang on, there's more:
After the singer performed Candy, and filmed himself on a punter’s phone, he returned to ribbing Grimmy, saying: “That’s Candy. How four-year-old do you want it, Radio 1?”
Yes, nothing makes your argument like pointing out you're an old man singing a nursery rhyme.
Leaning on his microphone stand eyeballing the DJ, he then popped a piece of chewing gum in his mouth and said: “Those aren’t drugs by the way. Nah, Radio 1’s not something that keeps me up at night, not at all.'
That doesn't make any sense.

He even tried a Yewtree joke:
Rob said: “I came here and looked around and thought, ‘I’m the only person I recognise here tonight’. It’s like looking at the cast of Operation Yewtree 2014. Ooh – too soon, too soon?”
Why would being too old to recognise anyone at a Radio Awards mean that everyone there would be arrested for sexually abusing children next year? It's not "too soon", it's just meaningless. You could do the Yewtree joke without the lead in; or you could use the lead-in of "I don't recognise anyone here" to do a "I guess that's the risk you take when your radio event clashes with the Yewtree staff party" or "presumably the old guard like to get an early night in case Yewtree wakes them up at four in the morning".

Robbie Williams is 83.

Huey and cry

Huey Morgan's snide twitterage aimed at Lauren Laverne was well-documented yesterday. Obviously, the gentle riposte from Laverne pointing out that, in effect, far from not programming her 6Music show, it's actually more that Morgan isn't trusted or thought capable of putting together a daytime show was a highlight, but this is the bit where Morgan really stepped over the line:

Fuck that shit. Kenickie? Please.
Really, Morgan? You're going there? Appealing that the Fun Loving Criminals somehow outranks Kenickie in terms of quality?

You're suggesting that, on some sort of scale in your head, Scooby Snacks is better than Punka?

Pfffft.

Sony Radio Awards: Cotton on

Really, Radio Academy? With all the hours of radio programming, most of which is dedicated to music, you've decided that the gold standard of music broadcasting is Fearne Cotton? That is the pitch to which all other music broadcasters should be aiming?

In other prizes, Danny Baker won a broadcaster prize, which feels right and proper - although he's so far ahead of his peers, you do wonder if they should do a second gold betting without him. Sony Awards 2011: The winners

Congratulations to Jeremy Vine, who adds 'interview of the year' from the Sony Awards to the distinction of being the only thing on Radio 2 ever to have been the inspiration for a joke on The Daily Show. That Gordon Brown interview was quite a thing.

(There's room to debate if the award was really for the interview of the work of the webcam, of course.)

Prizes tonight also to Danny Baker - let's hope people don't fall into the trap of thinking this is a sympathy vote for having had cancer, but truly a recognition that there's no finer broadcaster in the realm. He managed to make the slim conceit of a month of programmes from the roof of Broadcasting House work, dammit.

Ronnie Wood took the Music Radio Personality prize. Typical, huh, pop stars coming onto the radio and forcing out people like, erm, silver prize winner Jarvis Cocker.

Radiobit: 'Big' George Webley

George Webley - known as Big George - has died suddenly.

George had two long-running stints with BBC Radio London, in its GLR and 94.9 incarnations - he was currently presenting overnights on weekdays - and a spell at Three Counties Radio on breakfast. He was 2002's Sony Music Presenter of the Year.

His time on GLR had come to a dramatic halt when he had a heart attack during a programme - although he finished the show, he took a long break from radio to recover; he also became patron of the Milton Keynes Community Cardiac Group as a result of his experience.

His other career was as a producer, arranger and composer - he worked for EMI producing chart hits during his 30s; a move into television came as bandleader for Derek Jameson Tonight, the short-lived attempt to turn Derek Jameson into a new Michael Parkinson.

Webley would go on to become a go-to guy for programmes in search of a theme tune or arrangement; his work still graces Have I Got News For You and the residuals from having done the version of Handbags And Gladrags used by The Office must have been quite nice.

George Webley was 53; the cause of his death has not been announced.

Sony Awards 2011: The shortlist

Interesting that the Gordon Brown/Jeremy Vine interview has made this year's Sony Radio Awards shortlist - it was a great piece of political theatre (and certainly the only time Radio 2 has made it onto the Daily Show), but the real story was in the webcam image rather than the interview itself - presumably this is the first time a Sony Award shortlist place has been won by pictures rather than the audio? Oddly, the interview doesn't appear on the best use of multiplatform shortlist, which would appear to suggest that Absolute Radio's iPhone apps are better than any interview which appeared on radio last year.

I'm sure Stuart Maconie bears no ill-will, but it seems a bit unfair that Mark Radcliffe makes the music personality shortlist and he doesn't; especially since Nicky Campbell and Sheila Fogarty are jointly nominated in the speech personality category.

Danny Baker pops up in the speech section, despite still effectively doing the same programmes that he was doing when he won DJ awards. Let's put that down to him being uncategorisable, shall we?

And for those of you keeping count, it's TalkSport's turn to be listed in the Best National Station in the 'look, it's not all about the BBC' slot.

Sonys for 6 and Asian Network

The idea that Frankie from The Saturdays presented Jarvis Cocker with a rising star award is no more strange than the suggestion that it is, somehow, in the national interest for George Osborne to be in the Treasury with a booster seat and a talking calculator.

Yes, it's the Sony Awards, and although there are prizes for Adam And Joe (comedy) and Jarvis (aforementioned rising star), there wasn't very much applause for 6Music, and doesn't really conjure an image of Mark Thompson putting his head in his hands and asking "what have I done?" Good at comedy and giving Jarvis a show - while both good things - aren't quite what 6Music is primarily designed for, and not really the focus of the save the network campaigns.

Nihal's prize for the Asian Network - best speech programming - has a bit more heft to it, because it treats AN as really having a bit of breadth and influence.

Mind you, the whole awards ceremony is suspect, given that the Bono Elvis poem thing won a prize - despite everyone in the entire world having had their ears removed in shame after hearing it.

Zane Lowe won two prizes, and not for the first time, and Scott Mills is apparently better than Chris Moyles.

Winners in full over on the Sony site.

Sony Awards honour 6Music, shames self with nominations

First, the encouraging news: 6Music has received seven nominations in this year's Sony Radio Awards. Amongst the shortlisted names are Jarvis Cocker, Lauren Laverne, Adam & Joe, Huey Morgan and Steve Lamacq.

It's a nice acknowledgment of the high regard in which the station is held. And only slightly undermined by Nick Ferrari getting five nominations for his rotten show. And - oh, sweet jesus - even nominated that toe-curling Bono poem about Elvis for something.

The recently downsized Radcliffe and Maconie show has been nominated for best music programme.

Here are the nominations in full - deep breath:

Sony Awards: The winners

So, we know that Chris Moyles was mocked - mocked - by being told that he's one of the very best broadcasters in Britain. But who else won Sony prizes?

Vanessa Feltz won speech personality of the year, although she beat Ian Wright on TalkSport to that one, so maybe not quite so unusual. Nick Ferrari won speech broadcaster (a subtly different category), which was more surprising

David Rodigan's Kiss programme won best specialist music show, Chris Evans took both music radio personality and the entertainment award, which seems to confirm the theory that Evans does his best work when he's not trying to be "Chris Evans off the telly".

Radio 3 was, as Gordon Smart pointed out, station of the year. Kerrang was best station broadcasting to an TSA of a million plus, somehow being specialist and general at the same time according to the judges (no, us neither.) BBC Hereford & Worcester won the station prize at the next tier down, and Beacon Radio in Shropshire picked up the best small station award.

Fun Kids - perhaps the most godawfully named radio staion in the entire world - picked up digital station of the year.

Music broadcaster of the year went to Mark Radcliffe, which is well-deserved. Although you have to feel sorry for Stuart Maconie who seems to have been inadvertently labelled a sidekick by the Sonys. Which isn't fair at all.

Gordon in the morning: When entertainers clash

Having made himself look a bit stupid by running a "Moyles to leave Radio One" story that wasn't entirely true, it looks like we're now in for a period of fighting between two men who do their best to turn morning entertainment into a tiresome round of self-obsession.

So it is that Moyles getting the Sony Bronze prize in the Best Breakfast Show category is portrayed this morning not as a near-miss, but as some sort of horrific snub:

I just wanna mock DJ

And the loudmouth DJ can now add a new, glittering honour to his CV... he hosts the third best breakfast show in the country.

A new jingle must be in order for that landmark achievement?

The lardy Leeds host was the biggest casualty on a bad night for the station at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.

I'm sure it's frustrating to miss out on a prize, but it's hardly mocking someone to put them on a shortlist, is it?

Mind you, Smart doesn't really know much about radio at all:
UK Station Of The Year went to stuffy BBC Radio 3 ahead of their young, cool neighbours. [Radio 1]

Radio 3? Stuffy? And you really think that Scott Mills and Vernon Kaye are cooler than Verity Sharp and Fiona Talkington? Seriously, Gordon?

Still, this isn't really about radio, is it?
Chris seems to think I have it in for him.

I’m more worried about the way my poached eggs are cooked at Sun HQ every morning.

Ha! Dissed you, Moyles. Like, Gordon couldn't care less about you. He's more worried about his breakfast than your breakfast show. Although, oddly, Smart isn't running obsessive knocking copy about his eggs whenever he gets a chance.

In another part of Smart's obsessions, Liam Gallagher has been thinking about solo records:
Talking in Brazil during the group’s world tour LIAM said: “If everyone starts going off doing solo records then you might as well just split the band up, know what I mean?”

Yes, yes, it sounds good in theory, but it just means we'd end up with five useless records instead of one.

Maybe four. There might still be some hope that Andy Bell has a bit of something left about him.

Sony Awards: Freak Zone up for the cup

The Sony Radio Awards is one of the few meaningful awards ceremonies which manages to nominate surprising and deserving entrants most years.

So it's brilliant to see that Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone has been given a consideration for Specialist Music Show, especially in a year when it's had half an hour cut off its time to make room for Huey Fun Loving Criminal's show.

Although that gets a nomination, too, in best music show. Where - oh wonders of irony - he's up against Maconie and Radcliffe's Radcliffe And Maconie show. And then Radcliffe is fighting Maconie for Music Broadcaster Of The Year.

Shaun Keavney and Chris Moyles are both nominated for best breakfast, though: presumably the judges like to sleep in.

These are those nominations, in full, like:

A slice more lamb

MediaGuardian reports more deeply on George Lamb's victory as a "rising star" of radio at last night's Sonys:

Announcing his win, the Sony Radio Academy praised Lamb's blend of "surrealist humour, irreverent interviewing techniques and tongue-in-cheek antics".

"Although attracting listeners with his engaging banter and quirky approach to presenting, George's diverse music tastes form the heart of his show, taking in dancehall, rap, rave and beyond," the body added.

The trouble is, this sounds like someone desperately trying to explain why something won rather than a description of the programme. Unless we've missed the redefining of "surrealist" to mean "fifth-generation copy of late period Vic Reeves". And "tongue-in-cheek antics"? Antics? Are they hoping to have Nev The Blue Bear co-host?

It's the "irreverent interviewing technique" that's the real problem, though. Okay, if you're talking to Paul Daniels, fair enough. But a lot of his interviews are with the bands who play the Hub sessions - who, yes, are well chosen and probably account for much of the show's audience (doesn't everyone just spool through to 1 hour 43 and listen for ten minutes?). Why do I want an irreverent interview with a young band who I might not yet have heard an interview with? Okay, you might not want The Ting Tings interviewed as if they were senior clergy, but it would be nice to find out something about them rather than hearing Lamb's piffle-panted queries. And even if you like his line of questioning, his style is poor - he'll ask a question, get a reply, which he'll then repeat back slowly to the interviewee like a confused Brit asking for directions in central Luxembourg, before clucking and doing a Lee Green style "Awwwright".

Sure, there's a time and a place for George Lamb's style of presentation, but it's not on 6Music. The sooner his spiritual forebear Steve Wright retires and Lamb can move off 6, the better.

Not that it matters. You can just put last night's Gideon Coe on the listen agains.

No sauce for Lamb: Sony Radio Awards

Last night the Sony Radio Awards - the radio industry's chance to claim "they're a bit like the Oscars" - were handed out at a glittering occasion that was only nearly entirely overshadowed by the Sex And The City premiere.

The good news - having somehow got onto the shortlist (why, yes, controller of 6Music Lesley Douglas did help choose the names), George Lamb didn't win anything.

Chris Moyles won the best breakfast show prize, a recognition he accepted with his trademark good grace:

Moyles was presented with his prize by his parents, Vera and Chris, who said: "Eight million listeners know he deserves it."

Despite winning, the DJ dismissed the Sony awards as "rubbish" and "boring".

Accepting his prize, he said: "Radio 1 won nothing until now. I should get a pay rise.

"Before all of us got together the Radio 1 breakfast show... oh, it was dreadful."

Was it? Was Sara Cox's programme really so much worse? Or is it just that when the competition is now Johnny Vaughan and Dr Fox, it's a bit easier to get the audience in, even with a honking narcissist in charge.

Station of the year went to Radio 4; in what we're choosing to interpret as a bitchslap, GCap Global's threatened Planet Rock was handed the Digital Station title. That won't save it; only someone with money can do that.

The winners in a list which doesn't look quite full:

Breakfast show Chris Moyles, Radio 1
Music programme Dermot O'Leary, Radio 2
Specialist music programme Friday Night Floorfillers with Krystle, 97.3 Forth One
News & current affairs Newshour, BBC World Service
Speech Saturday Live, Radio 4
Entertainment Russell Brand, Radio 2
Music broadcaster Andi Durrant, Galaxy
Music radio personality Jonathan Ross, Radio 2
Speech broadcaster Simon Mayo, Radio 5 Live
Comedy Down the Line, Radio 4
Digital station Planet Rock
Station of the year Radio 4

Update: Thanks to Simon T for pointing out that, actually, Lamb did win - it's just neither the Guardian nor the BBC reports mentioned his "rising star" award.

Too much gravy: Evans wins prizes

No wonder this morning's Today sounded a bit ragged: they'd have been out celebrating their Best Breakfast Show prize at last night's Sonys. If anyone can explain to me how you can effectively weigh up John Humphrys interviewing Tony Blair over decisions to invade Iraq against Chris Moyles "pretending" to be a "big black man", we'd love to know.

Chris Evans won a prize - the entertainment award - just like it was 1999, and as if he was entertaining. The now-defunct Mark Radcliffe show picked up best music programme; even John Peel managed to get a gong - although that was a venerable, Broadcaster's broadcaster type prize. Having said which, we doubt if Peel would have nominated himself for such a prize.

Colin Murray was garlanded as Music Broadcaster of the Year; Christian O'Connell (who is Colin Murray with adverts) won for best competition.

These are the takey-home prize winners in full:

They're like the radio Oscars; or at least the radio BAFTA Craft awards

They stole Danny Baker's iPod during the course of the announcement of the nominees for this year's Sony Radio awards.

Amongst the highlights are Mark Radcliffe, Charles Hazlewood and Zane Lowe battling it out with, erm, Emma B's Heart Drivetime show for Music Programme of the Year; interestingly, Popworld Radio is up for the same prize - a podcast, if you please.

Radcliffe's new partner, Stuart Maconie, is up for specialist programme with 6Music's rather fine Freakzone - he's going eye to eye with Bobby Friction's Friction and Westwood (really? in 2007).

Our old mate Pete Price has got a nod for Radio City's phone-in (the "interactive award" now); Kershaw and Radcliffe are up against the slightly more glitzy Jonathan Ross and Chris Evans for the personality award. It's wonderful to see BBC London's coverage of the London tornado up for "breaking news coverage" - hopefully, if they win, Danny Baker will pick up the prize for his essential commentary on Sky News' desperate bids to turn a mild weather surprise into a national crisis ("a caller says they've seen a plastic bag blowing down the road...").
