Dolly Sods

This past weekend we took a little trip to Canaan Valley, West Virginia to see the fall leaves.  Last year we drove up early on a Saturday morning and came home late that night.  This year we decided to stay at the Canaan Resort for the night so we could have more time to see all of the sights.  We had planned that we would go to Dolly Sods on our way home Sunday.  Much to our surprise it was extremely foggy once we got there.
And it was raining...  We have never been up there in these types of elements.  It was a different experience to say the least.
Even though it was raining with a lot of fog we did have a good time looking at God's beauty that he created for us to see at Dolly Sods.  I have wrote several other posts of us going to Dolly Sods that you can see HERE.  I just realized that I have been there more than that without sharing some of my pictures from there so I'll share one from this summer now so you can see a comparison of what it looks like on a beautiful clear day.  It looks like you could reach up and touch Heaven there!

At times we could only see not more than 30 feet in front of us if that!  It was that foggy!

Dolly Sods Geocaching 2nd Cache

While we were exploring Dolly Sods we went on a second geocaching treasure hunt. This time I went so there are lots of pictures to share!

The narrow path was lined with small gravel surrounded by ferns and shrubbery and large rocks and trees. It was an easy path to walk.
Taking the lead of the GPS my Young Lady is in search of the Treasure! They found the Treasure and grabbed the box before I could get a picture of where it was hidden! They are fast!

The cache was in a metal box that was full of Treasures to trade.

They like to look everything over to see what it is that they would like to take from the box.

Someone before us had left a camofaluge New Testament Bible.
I opened it up to see if they had written a note inside. I found the name harper clan 7 written on the inside cover of the Bible. The kids decided to leave the Bible for someone else because they already have their own Bibles.

Before I knew it the kids had traded Treasures and hidden the metal box back where they had found it. It was in a pretty clever hiding spot don't you think?

We then headed back down the path to which we came.

This is a Survey Marker that was placed at Dolly Sods in 1995 by the Corps of Engineers - US Army. We found this at the trail head near the parking area.

Dolly Sods Wildflowers

The wildflowers were in full bloom when we were at Dolly Sods in early June. There was a beautiful orange flower that was blooming on a tree. I have no idea what the name of the flower is. All I know is that it was an unexpected sight to see.

Isn't it beautiful!

Dolly Sods Geocaching

My kids love to go geocaching when we are on vacation. Geocaching is a form of a Treasure Hunt. There are many caches at Dolly Sods. Here you will see my Little Man finding a geocache that was hidden under a rock.

The cache is in a metal box.

They looked through the box and put it back where they found it.

This is one of the Treasure Hunts that I didn't go with them on so that is why there weren't many pictures! I do have lots of pictures of another one that I went with them on so you'll get to see more of what a geocache actually is from a future post!

More Dolly Sods

My kids are braver than I am! There is no way that I will climb up on these rocks like they do. My husband goes with them and they take pictures of the beautiful scenery from them. I stand in my comfort zone and take pictures of them taking pictures!

My adventurous little man!

My beautiful young lady!

Dolly Sods

While we were on vacation at Canaan Valley we took a short drive to Dolly Sods. You know you are there when you cross the bridge below.

Not too far from there you then will see some of the most beautiful rocks and scenery you've ever seen! The Mountain Laurels were in bloom along with other wildflowers that only grow in that area.

We took a walk on a path to see the overlook. The picture below is the path! You have to watch your step as you travel this path!

It's worth the short walk though to get to see the beautiful scenery beyond it! Unfortunately it wasn't a clear day the day we went there. Usually you can see much farther than we did.

It's so beautiful nonetheless!

Go HERE to find out additional information about Dolly Sods. It is very interesting!
