Here is an interview with Pitchfork on the release: Pitchfork: When I interviewed Ben (Chasney) he mentioned that you sent him a bottle of Current 93. Do you own a distillery?
DT: [Laughs] There's an absinthe company in Germany and the guy who runs it used to be a big Current 93 fan. He wrote to me and asked if I'd be interested in designing a label for his new range of absinthe. I said, yeah, I'd really like to, why don't we do a special edition of, say, 93 or 100 copies with a CD with an unreleased track done especially for it. That developed into a box with a bottle of absinthe and with my label, which was signed by me. There were two absinthe glasses and an absinthe spoon and the CD. So there were 93 of those, and Ben got sent one of those. There's a charity I work with called the John Bradburne Memorial Society, a leprosy mission in Zimbabwe. I said I'd do it for the absinthe company if they made a donation-- my payment-- to the society and also put in some blurb about the society. So they did.

Gary Panter was born in Durant, Oklahoma, and grew up in Brownsville and Sulphur Springs, Texas. a painter, commercial artist, and designer as well as cartoonist, he is the recipient of two Emmy Awards for his setdesigns for "Pee-Wee's Playhouse". His work has been exhibited in Japan, Sweden, Spain and France and in galleries across America. He was one of the earliest contributors to "Slash", and his work has appeared in "Time", "New York", "Rolling Stone", "Raw", "Spin", and many other newspapers and magazines."
Around 1979 Warner Brothers asked him to do a couple of covers for Frank Zappa albums. Gary Panter also recorded with the Residents. Frank Zappa appears in Gary Panter's graphic novel "Jimbo in Purgatory". The book also includes a (one-page) list and drawings of Gary Panter's favourite vinyl recordings. It includes The Mothers Of Invention with "Uncle Meat", Captain Beefheart's "Clear Spot", an Edgar Varèse album, The Fugs, Pink Floyd, and more gems. "Jimbo's Inferno", another graphic novel, and part two of Jimbo's adventures, also includes another (one-page) list & drawings of Gary Panter's thirty-three 'best loved vinyl recordings'. The list includes Zappa's "Lumpy Gravy", Captain Beefheart's "The Spotlight Kid" and The Residents' "Duck Stab", just to name a few.

Overheat Communications in Tokyo originally issued Gary's LP in 1983. Now Overheat has just rereleased Pray For Smurph on CD with booklet and special collector's FREAK FLAG! The music is irreverent, psychedelic, swampy and a little country. Gary plays guitar and yelps and is accompanied by Ian McLagan, the Residents, Phil Culp, KK, Joe Berardi and many other fine musicians and audio technicians.
In 1989, he worked with Jay Cotton in the recording of a limited picture disc edited by his british alter-ego and almighty Savage Pencil/Edwin Pouncey and published by Blast First : "One Hell Soundwich", includes a "Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen" cover. This two delicious experimental rock recordings, for Panter fans or lovers of The Residents, ripped by Rain, and zipped with HQ scans. Thanx Alice!
PANTER: I like Beefheart. Right now, I'm listening to Nurse With Wound, 60s stuff, and 80s Virgin Prunes stuff. I get a lot of the records I never had before in garage sales. I just got a Jethro Tull record.
SECONDS: For a dollar, right?
PANTER: Yeah. In perfect shape. And I just got the soundtrack to The Bible by some Japanese composer. It's little bit like a Godzilla soundtrack. And I make radio tapes where I just take little bits off the radio - listen to clips of ten seconds of a song and a commercial and listen to it a thousand times, and get rid of things and add things in. I like Negativland and Eugene Chadbourne. Psychedelic and neo-Psychedelic and Concrete music, Electronic music.
SECONDS: You play music yourself?
PANTER: Yeah, I play in a retarded kind of way.
SECONDS: You've done a couple of records.
PANTER: I had the opportunity to put out some records. The music I have out isn't schooled or anything. I would make up these songs in my room and then I'd get a chance to go into a studio and record them. The first time I would ever hear them would be when it was going on tape. It was very amateurish and weird. It goes along with the roughness of my other work. I shouldn't really be putting out records anyway.
SECONDS: Why's that?
PANTER: I just think it's embarrassing to put out half-assed dopey records. Anyway, I enjoy doing it. I love doing the package stuff. Some people even like them occasionally.
SECONDS: You were hooked up with The Residents for a while. The Ralph Records ads used to scare the pants off me. It was as if there was some retarded guy they kept in the basement.
PANTER: They did have a retarded friend who's left-handed, can't quite put things together in the right way, and not really trying that hard to make it. I've always been interested in creepy stuff since Famous Monsters Of Filmland and monster movies. I remember seeing an ad in the paper for The Land Unknown and making my parents let me go see it when I was six. It was a double feature with The Curse of Frankenstein and I just remember having the shit scared out of me.

United Dairies was founded in 1979 to release the first LP by Nurse With Wound. John Fothergill quickly started using the label to release other artists such as Lemon Kittens and Bombay Ducks and set up the side label Experimental Records to release more rock oriented music. The other member of NWW, Steven Stapleton found these releases to be of poor quality, and eventually put his foot down when it came to the LP by Two Daughters which he insisted not be released on UD. Eventually, Stapleton took over the label when Fothergill retreated from musical activity. Up to this point, released on United Dairies were primarily on LP, along with a handful of cassettes. In 1987, United Dairies released a 32 cassette box set containing most, but not all, of the back catalog, as well as several items not released by United Dairies before. But while the box held 32 tapes, the series of cassette reissues included 34 titles (one of which was quickly deleted). Buyers of the "Untied Diaries 1979-1987" set found themselves missing at least two titles, and often more as the sets often including duplicate copies of one or more titles. The entire cassette series was later bootlegged by RRRecords, who reproduced them in large quantities without any permission from UD. Facing serious problem with their distributor The Cartel, distribution of United Dairies was taken over by People Who Can't, who eventually became World Serpent Distribution and took over manufacturing of titles as well. Through this period, UD releases were almost always by Nurse With Wound and directly related projects, with the notable exception of two disc by Volcano The Bear and a reissue of the Operating Theatre album. However, there were other things planned. Steve had hoped to release discs by irr. app. (ext.) and Earthmonkey as well, but was continually put off by World Serpent when it came to these releases. After World Serpent Distribution folded in 2003, United Dairies has been manufactured and distributed by Jnana Records.
There are two pressings of this LP. The first comes in the "monster" cover by Stapleton, while the second has the "burned man" cover by Produktion. There also exist a small number of copies in hand made sleeves.
Run out etching on Side B - "Sureal Tickler Innit". Both tracks recorded in 1980. Originally released as part of the "Psilotripitaka" box in 1990, made available separately in 1993.

John Fothergill plays electric guitar and is responsible for effects. Heman Pathak plays organ and keyboards and is also responsible for effects.
The first Nurse with Wound album, and a true oddity. Steven Stapleton was apparently offered some free studio time one weekend, and immediately called his record collecting buddies John Fothergill and Heman Pathak, persuading them to buy some instruments - none of them had played music before. The person who offered them the studio asked if he could play a little lead guitar over their "songs " and they couldnt really refuse, hence the slightly santanaesque flourishes over huge cacophonous slabs of chaos. Some of it is a bit unlistenable, but it has that rare feeling of improvised magic happening, and is quite interesting in that respect.
Stapleton added an S&M cover design, and hey presto, it was an unlikely hit! [ncw]

Hyper-rare Nurse With Wound affiliated LP on red and black vinyl. According to Steve Stapleton only 100 copies on red vinyl were ever distributed, the rest were produced on black vinyl. Original pressing of 1000 copies, though legend has it all but 300 were destroyed. Most of the sales would have been through the United Dairies mail order list. Hastings Of Malawi were John Grieve, Dave Hodes and Heman Pathak who, in one way or another, were also involved in the early Nurse With Wound records.
