ARC Review: A Lady by Midnight by Tessa Dare

A Lady by Midnight
by Tessa Dare
(Spindle Cove # 3)

On Mondays they had country walks.  Tuesdays were sea bathing.  On Wednesdays they turned their hands to gardening.  And Thursdays were their day to shoot.

Spindle Cove is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to go back in time and visit.  This time around we finally get the story Kate and Corporal Thorne.  She's soft and refined, even though she grew up as an orphan, never knowing or remembering who her parents were.  He's dark and intense, with a past that is very much a part of his every thought.  A past that involved Kate, but she can't remember.

I loved the connection between Kate and Thorne, the link in their pasts, and how they interacted in the present.  They were very well suited for each other even when they were arguing.  Although he is the typical tortured, brooding hero, he was written so to perfection.  How can you not love such a hard man who then turns around and has so much love for a puppy?  Then flip that coin and you get that burning desire he's always had for Kate. *melting* Swoon-worthy and absolutely lovable, that is how I have filed Samuel Thorne in my mind.

Although Kate was a very likeable heroine, strong and independent, I have to say she's not my favorite in this series.  I found her quick acceptance of her new family and of some of the things that were going on around her wasn't exactly how I was expecting her to react.  But in her relationship with Thorne she was everything he needed and then some.

A LADY BY MIDNIGHT is definitely another solid book in this wonderful series.  Tessa Dare yet again captivates my full attention with the intricate story of Kate's life and love, taking us through the ups and downs with even a bit of humor.  I can't wait to be WOWed again with the next trip to Spindle Cove.

A Week to be Wicked by Tessa Dare

An air of determination settled on her. The curves of her face became decisive angles. “That’s it. I’m going to Edinburgh, with or without you.”

“What? You mean to travel almost five hundred miles alone? No. I can’t let you do that. I . . . I forbid you.”

It was Colin’s first attempt at forbidding anyone to do anything, and it worked about as well as he’d expected it to. Which was to say, not at all.

She sniffed. “Stay here and marry Diana if you must, but I won’t be a party to it. I can’t simply stand by and watch.”

“God, is that all that’s worrying you?” He put his hands on her shoulders to make sure she was paying attention. “I won’t marry Diana. I never had any plan to marry Diana. I’ve been trying to tell you as much for days.”

She stared at him. “Truly?”

“Truly.”

The distant rumble of hoofbeats and carriage wheels shook the ground. As they stared at each other, it gathered strength.

“That’ll be the coach,” she said.

Colin glanced down the road. Yes, here it came. The moment of decision.

“Come now,” he said. “Let me help you take your things back to the rooming house.”

She shook her head. “No.”

“Min—”

“No. I can’t go back. I just can’t. I left a note, saying we’ve eloped. By now, they’re probably awake and reading it. I can’t be the girl who cried ‘elopement.’ The pathetic thing who gathered all her hopes and packed three trunks, and went out to stand at the road at dawn only to slink back home defeated and hopeless. My mother would . . .” She drew a deep breath, stood tall, and lifted her chin. “I just can’t be that girl anymore. I won’t.”

As he watched her, Colin was visited by the strangest feeling, unfurling warm and buttery inside him. It was a sense of privilege and mute wonder, as though he’d witnessed one of those small, everyday miracles of spring. Like a licked-clean foal taking its first steps on wobbly legs. Or a new butterfly pushing scrunched, damp wings from a chrysalis.

Before his eyes, she’d transformed into a new creature. Still a bit awkward and uncertain, but undaunted. And well on her way to being beautiful.

Colin scratched his neck. He wished there were someone nearby he could turn to and say, Would you look at that?

“You truly want this,” he said. “It means that much to you.”

“Yes.” Her eyes were clear and unblinking.

“If we embark on this journey, there’s no going back.”

“I know.”

“And you comprehend all the implications. Everything you’ll put at risk. Hell, everything you’ll outright sacrifice, the moment you leave with me?”

She nodded. “I’m exchanging my acceptance in fashionable society for standing within the Royal Geological Society. I understand this perfectly, and I think it a rather good trade. You told me to think of myself, Colin. Well, I’m doing just that.”

Turning from him, she popped up on her toes and waved her arms, signaling the coachman. “Stop! Stop, please!”

He stood by and watched her desperate gesticulations, absurdly enchanted by them. Good for you, pet. Good for you.

As the carriage rolled to a halt, she reached for her smallest trunk. She looked to him, smiling. “Last chance. Are you coming or aren’t you?”

Tessa Dare is graciously giving away a signed copy of  A WEEK TO BE WICKED. Open to all.

When a devilish lord and a bluestocking set off on the road to ruin…
Time is not on their side.
Minerva Highwood, one of Spindle Cove’s confirmed spinsters, needs to be in Scotland.
Colin Sandhurst, Lord Payne, a rake of the first order, needs to be… anywhere but Spindle Cove.
These unlikely partners have one week
to fake an elopement
to convince family and friends they’re in “love”
to outrun armed robbers
to survive their worst nightmares
to travel four hundred miles without killing each other
All while sharing a very small carriage by day and an even smaller bed by night.
What they don’t have time for is their growing attraction. Much less wild passion. And heaven forbid they spend precious hours baring their hearts and souls.
Suddenly one week seems like exactly enough time to find a world of trouble.
And maybe…just maybe…love.

ARC Review: A Week to be Wicked by Tessa Dare

A Week to be Wicked
by Tessa Dare
(Spindle Cove # 2)

I first fell in love with both characters in book one.  Colin Sandhurst, Lord Payne, is a rake, a flirt, always getting in trouble and never sleeping alone.  We heard a little bit about his "condition" of needing to have someone sleep with him or he just can't sleep but we didn't know the origin of that story.  Isn't it always the funny, unabashed heroes that have the most depth?  Well that's exactly what you can expect from Lord Payne.

While everyone in town thinks he has his sights set on Diana Highwood, it is actually her sister that has caught and stirred his interest.  Minerva is the smart one of her sisters, she never wants to outshine another so long as she is left alone with her rocks.  Well, she is very much interested in geology and has found a fascination with some underground caves in Spindle Cove.  While her mother decided to extend their stay thinking that Lord Payne might propose to her sister, she's been researching and gathering information about a footprint she's found in one of the caves.

But when she hears from the rumor mill in town that Lord Payne might be proposing to Diana so that he can access the money in his fortune earlier than he was supposed to, she comes to him with a proposition.  He can come along with her to a geology simposium so she can present her findings which will earn her 500 guineas.  He can keep the money, which will support him until his birthday in London, when he will have access to his fortune.  Tempting as this might be to a rake like him (ha!) she doesn't have an easy time of it convincing him but finds himself going anyway.

It helps that he's been attracted to her from the start for unknown reasons.  Or maybe just because she is a surprise.  They are polar opposites and they bicker and argue at every opportunity.  He teases her constantly but she gives it right back.  She's so innocent at times where he is concerned.  And she reaches a part of him that he doesn't show others easily.

I loved Colin and Minerva together so much I just couldn't put this book down!  There was never a dull moment in their adventure to get to Scotland and I was rooting for them the whole time.  And there is also a tortured past that our hero has to face head on for his girl that might've brought me close to tears towards the end.  If you like your heroines spunky and smart, crazy adventures, funny dialogues and a whole lot of sparks flying then you must read this book!

Review: A Night to Surrender by Tessa Dare

A Night to Surrender
by Tessa Dare
(Spindle Cove # 1)

Spindle Cove is a nice and quiet vacationing spot where young ladies can go to and feel free to enjoy themselves without facing the judgement of others like they would in London society.  Also known as Spinsters Cove.  The ladies here are not your ordinary historical romance heroine.  There's something that has been determined "less desirable" with each of them.  Once they are in Spindle Cove, though, they maintain a schedule.  On Mondays, they have country walks.  On Tuesdays, sea bathing. On Wednesdays, gardening.  I'll have to let you find out about Thursdays when you read the book!

Susanna Finch is the head spinster of sorts.  She pretty much runs this town, and the women have taken it over!  Susanna's control is tested when a group of men, led by Victor Bramwell, aka Bram, and soon to be known as Lord Rycliff arrives.  He's a war hero seeking her fathers' recommendation so that he can return to his post for the duration of the war.  Her dad gives him a castle, and a title, and will consider signing his papers if he manages to make the few good men of the town to make a presentation worthy of a military group.

With not too many pickings, he has his work cut out for him.  And the one thing he was not counting on is Susanna Finch.  She's spirited, opinionated, strong willed, and he can't help his attraction to her!  These two are great from the start!  Their dialogue is witty and funny and entertaining.  Their chemistry is amazing turning to hot!

The secondary characters in this book are endearing as well.  My favorite being Colin, Bram's cousin.  Lord Payne is the incorrigible rake who, in more than one occasion, turns the sweet town of Spindle Cove upside down with his antics.  I can't wait for his book next.

I am excited to see what happens with the rest of the crazy ladies in Spindle Cove!

Favorite quote:
He knew all her objections to marriage were logical. She’d built her life and village around happy spinsterhood, and the demands of his military career left no room for a wife. A hasty wedding could mean grief for Sir Lewis, scandal for Susanna, and God knew what for Bram. But he was going to marry her, despite it. Because when he looked at Susanna, all he could think was one word. It wasn’t a particularly elegant or poetic word, any more so than “like.” But it had a straightforward eloquence all its own.
Mine.

Review: Three Nights with a Scoundrel by Tessa Dare

Three Nights with a Scoundrel
by Tessa Dare
Stud Club #3

The final installment of the Stud Club series is about the remaining bachelor of the Stud Club, Julian Belllamy and the Lady Lily. Right from the first book you can see that Julian is madly in love with his murdered friend's deaf twin sister, the only person who doesn't seem to realize is Lily herself. But, as Julian gets more obsessed with finding Leo's murderers believing that they were really after him because of his very shady past, Lily gets worried for his health and makes him promise her three nights with him where he can help her in society to find a husband.

I have enjoyed this series greatly, each book has given a great couple with completely different characters, I don't think this will ever be my favourite series but I definately liked it. And, I am glad that at last I have read Julian and Liliy's book! You know from the other two books that Julian loves Lily, and so I was pleased to see them get their HEA.

Julian, I think, would go under the tortured hero catergory, after living his childhood in the gutter and then his adulthood trying to wreak revenge on the aristocracy he doesn't feel worthy of Lily. I have to say that annoyed me a little, the whole unworthy thing, I am glad that Lily was having none of it. In fact I believe Julian was my least favourite hero in this series, for some reason he didn't capture me like Spencer and Rhys did. However, Lily, I did like she adventurous and wasn't afraid to go after Julian when she realized she loved him.

What I liked most about this book was the final discovery over who the Leo's murderer was and why he was killed! This part of the story has kept me guessing all the way through! And I didn't know the answer right up until it was revealed, which was fantastic, I love that it kept me guessing. I also liked the whys of his killing, I don't want to spoil it if you haven't read it, but I thought what happened was the best explanation.

I enjoyed this book and this trilogy and I will definitely be looking out for more books by Tessa Dare.

Review: Twice Tempted by a Rogue by Tessa Dare

Twice Tempted by a Rogue
by Tessa Dare
Stud Club #2

Rhys, Lord Ashworth, has decided to go back to his childhood home despite all the violent ghosts of this past that live there. After having a hellish childhood he has tried most his life to find ways to die, but with no success, he joined the army and charged headlong into every fight, but always he survives where other men die. Now he is back and determined to build something and equally determined to have Meredith Maddox, the owner of the Inn, the only source of income on his lands, as his wife.

This was a really good book and I enjoyed it a little more then I did the first in this series One Dance with a Duke, I think this was because I preferred the characters of Rhys and Merry. I am a little bit of a sucker for a tortured hero, and Rhys definitely fit the bill with his heartbreaking childhood, self loathing and pinch of violence. And Merry, she was a stong female character and I liked that she didn't give into Rhys straight away.

This also had a small secondary romance as well! I love a book that has a secondary romance! But, I was a little disappointed that we didn't see Amelia and Spencer from the first book, I like to check in with previous HEAs make sure that all is well in paradise.

This was another great read in this trilogy, I don't think this is going to be on my favourite books list, but it is worth reading if you want some quality historical romance.

Review: One Dance with a Duke by Tessa Dare

One Dance with a Duke
by Tessa Dare
Stud Club #1
3.5 Feathers

Amelia isn't impressed with the Duke of Midnight. He descends upon a ball at midnight dances a set with one of the young and the brainless before leaving again, the ladies sighs of both desire and fear follow in his wake. However, her wastrel brother owes him money so when he next makes his melodramatic entrance she commendeers his hand; however, little does she know that that one action will cause her life to change drastically.

I know 3.5 feathers doesn't seem like much, especially as I did really enjoy this book. I liked the hero Spencer, The Duke of Midnight, he was arrogant in a way only a Duke and a hero of a romance novel can be and yet still have you lusting after him. He was also endearingly vulnrable as well at times, which just made him even more irrestible. And Amelia, I have mixed thoughts on the heroine of this story, most the time she was witty and sensible and I really liked her. BUT when it can to her brother she was totally blind. Her brother Jack was a complete leech, he takes and takes and takes from her and gambles it all away, but still she keeps on giving him more, he take complete advantage of her loving and nurturing nature and it really bugged me how blind she was to it, especially when it almost ruined her marriage to Spencer! This complete stupidity really really annoyed me and it tainted how much I liked her.

But, the writing in this was really good I liked her style, she creates a window in to her story, showing you her well crafted characters through dialogue, which flowed naturally and description that never bogged you down with too much unnecessary detail. I think what has stopped me from giving this more then 3.5 feathers was that although I liked it, I didn't love it, it didn't have that extra spark that makes me think I will be remembering this book for a while to come. It made me smile, it was romantic, I liked the characters but nothing jumped out at me as being fantastic.

This was a great read, despite what seems a luke warm review, I do recommend you read this if you are looking for a good romance with likable characters and great writing.

Review: Once Upon a Winter's Eve by Tessa Dare

Once Upon a Winter's Eve
by Tessa Dare
(Spindle Cove # 1.5)

I've been checking out this series for a while so when I saw this Christmas read for only $0.79 on Kindle I had to jump on it. I've never read this author either so it was the perfect sampler. Now I can't wait to read more.

This historical has some spunk. Violet is no wilting flower. She was in love with her neighbor, Christian, her whole life. Then one night he finally notices her and takes her virginity, only to leave town the next day. From then on, he's been referred to in her mind as The Disappointment.

She's been away from home at Spindle Cove ever since and now that is time to go back home and find a husband she receives a most unexpected guest. A bit unrecognizable, but still her Christian. She's not sure if he's a spy or just working undercover during the war but he's risked everything to come see her and ask her to give him a chance and wait for him.

I thought this was a perfect Christmas time romance, it has some intrigue and some action and the H/h are very likeable. A fast and deliciously enjoyable read!
