ARC Review: Alpha and Omega: Cry Wolf Graphic Novel

Alpha and Omega Graphic Novel
Cry Wolf: Volume I
by Patricia Briggs

When reading a graphic novel you either already know about the series, in which case you have a preconceived idea of what you are expecting of the graphic novel; or this might be your first taste and it will determine whether you will read the books.

I've been a fan of Patricia Briggs for a while now and, although I haven't caught up yet to the current Alpha & Omega novel, I do love their world.  This graphic novel picks up right were Cry Wolf starts.  Charles rescued Anna and he's brought her home.  Anna is still dealing with her past, Charles is still healing from the battle to rescue her and there's some pack issues to deal with.

As far as the story goes, I like to see new stories in the world of the series as opposed to see the book translated to a graphic novel.  However I think they did a great job at telling the story.

The graphics were ok, some pages or scenes better than others and definitely not my favorite graphic novel as far as the illustrations.  Characterizations were pretty dead on to what I saw the characters as though, so I enjoyed seeing them come to life.

I think this book would be a great read for both fans and newbies.

ARC Review: Fair Game by Patricia Briggs + Giveaway (On the Prowl Anthology)

Fair Game
(Alpha & Omega #3)
by Patricia Briggs

What happens when a werewolf is forced to kill others of his kind without any sort of break? What toll does it take on the werewolf and subsequently his mate? These questions are asked in FAIR GAME, the third and highly anticipated book in the Alpha & Omega series by Patricia Briggs.

FAIR GAME starts out with a low point between Anna and Charles’ relationship. Anna feels detached from her mate, Charles. Her father-in-law, Bran, is now making Charles hunt out-of-control werewolves without any sort of break. Whenever Charles comes home to Anna after these assignments, he is devoid of any emotion and love and this is when Anna starts to believe that his continued killing is now taking a toll on her mate. She approaches Bran and tries to reason with him, telling him that Charles will lose himself completely if he doesn’t stop this. However, as Alpha, Bran has limited people to turn to with such an important and dangerous task. In an effort to give Charles a small break, he sends Anna and Charles, as her guard to Boston where they will be working with the FBI and Cantrip to catch a killer.

Since Charles has been on edge lately, he keeps himself away from Anna to protect her from himself. But because of this, their relationship is strained. Anna wants her loving mate back, but Charles wants to keep his distance for fear of hurting her. For most part of this book, Anna and Charles work their way through the ups and downs of this strain. However, they still do a great job of working together on this case. Brother Wolf also makes many appearances that eventually help them get back to where they are meant to be relationship wise.

The romance isn’t as pronounced in this book because of the strain in their relationship. However, there are really heartbreaking moments that are simply too sweet not to share:
“She had taught him that to be brave, you have to fear losing something. I am afraid I will lose her. That they will take her from me – or that I will drive her away when she sees what I really am.”
“People as old and powerful as he should never be given someone to love.
For Anna he would destroy the world.”
Briggs opens up this book with an amazing prologue that introduces a new character named Leslie who plays a big role throughout the book. As a FBI agent who helps Anna and Charles, I found that I instantly liked her. The same can be said for Issac, an Alpha in the area. What I liked about this book was the fact that Briggs isn’t afraid to create a diverse ethnic cast. It’s always refreshing when you read about that in novels.

FAIR GAME makes me remember all the things I loved about this series: the perfect match between Charles and Anna, some mystery, and enough action to keep a girl like me happy. I only wish there were more pages!

Review: Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs

Iron Kissed
(Mercy Thompson # 3)
by Patricia Briggs

Wow. I don’t think I can write a review without gushing about this book! Iron Kissed completely surpassed my expectations, went beyond anything I could have conjured up in my mind about Mercy and seriously left me in shock by the time I flipped the last page. Seriously. Blown. Away.

As the first book dealt primarily with werewolves and the second with vampires, Iron Kissed focused mainly on the fae. Now I’m not usually a fae fan, but Briggs writes about a world that isn’t too different from ours. Mercy has to get up each morning and go to work. She’s got bills to pay and so on, but Briggs incorporates fantasy element flawlessly into her narrative and it just makes the Mercy Thompson world more appealing. I think that’s why I love Mercy so much. She’s just a regular girl who just so happens to be a coyote shifter that gets caught up in another world.

New characters are introduced in this book and I knew from the moment that Tim was introduced that he would be some major trouble. What I didn’t know was how he had the power to break someone as strong and resistant as Mercy. I’ve noticed that rape is popular in a lot of UF series. I don’t know why and I don’t see the appeal in making your heroine endure something so traumatic, but it got to me. Out of the three books so far, this one had the most heart in it. And if I didn’t love Mercy already, I think this book would have made me love her even more. It wasn’t just because I felt sympathy for her, though I did, it was the fact that she still fought Tim despite her believing that he was her love. It showcased an inner strength of true love and will more so than any other book I’ve read in awhile.

Briggs finally addressed the whole Adam/Sam debacle and she did it well. She managed to write it so that Mercy finally chooses Adam, but still doesn’t disregard Samuel as a person she once loved in the past. I thought the car scene with Sam was perfect. It was sometimes tense and angry, but also lovable. It makes it believable that Sam and Mercy can go on as friends.

And then there’s that bathroom scene with Adam and Mercy. I wish I could have Adam’s werewolf babies! I just adore him and I love how he takes care of Mercy. With Mercy so vulnerable after everything that has happened, you can see the change in Adam already. He’s still fiercely possessive and has that temper, but there’s tenderness when he’s with Mercy. I can’t wait to see how their relationship works out!

My favourite quote from this book is as fiercely passionate as the Alpha who said it. A little territorial and very honest, it’s almost as if he’s telling her he loves her. *sigh*

His hands, which had been moving in circles in my fur, stopped and took a good hold. “Ben says you might run. If you do, I will find you and bring you back. Every time you run, Mercy. I won’t force you, but... I won’t leave or let you leave either. If you can fight that cursed fairy drink, you can certainly overcome any advantage being an Alpha gives me if you really want to. No more excuses, Mercy. You are mine, and I am keeping you.”

Review: Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs

Blood Bound
(Mercy Thompson #2)
by Patricia Briggs

Blood Bound, the second book in the Mercy Thompson series was definitely better than the first! I thought the story was much more engaging in this one. There was a purpose straight from the beginning and of course, I can’t complain since Stefan has a considerable amount of page time!

Mercy, my new favourite heroine, finds herself in a bit of a situation involving the seethe and a certain demon-riding vampire named Cory Littleton. The guy ended up with a wuss name, but this creep is scary as fuck! The scene where he was pressed up against Mercy’s bedroom window, scratching the glass with his teeth made me want to go screaming for Sam. But Mercy handles her fear well. She does this countless times within this book, playing detective and using her connections to her advantage. Not only she is capable, but she’s smart as hell too!

Briggs knows how to tease me. She loves ending books with the Mercy-Adam-Samuel love triangle. My heart broke when Samuel revealed the truth about what happened when he was in Texas. Aww, the poor guy! And then there’s the fact that he kisses Mercy! TWICE!!

And what about that work-out scene with Adam? That scene served two purposes. One, readers get to read about a sweaty Adam. Cue swoons. And two, it furthers the storyline with the dom/sub issue between Mercy and Adam. I don’t see it as a problem since neither of them can control themselves around each other.

I have no idea who Mercy is going to choose because I adore both wolves equally! I don’t think Mercy is a girl who’ll leads men on. But if there’s one thing that’s got me hooked about this series, it’s the love triangle! I can’t help myself!

But this book wasn’t without its imperfections! I thought some scenes dragged on a little too long, such as Mercy’s second visit to Stefan’s menagerie. Nevertheless, this book was damn entertaining.

Interview and Giveaway with Patricia Briggs!

Drum roll, please! *Suz starts banging on a drum* UTC is thrilled to present our January Author of the Month! We present to you, Patricia Briggs! Patricia Briggs is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the vastly popular Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega series. If you haven't read any of these fantastic urban fantasy reads yet, then you are missing out majorly! Don't fret, UTC has you covered. You can check out her books on her website here.

Now without stalling any longer, please help us welcome our Author of the Month, Patricia Briggs!

Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us! Let’s get started! Tell us 5 things about you that will surprise us.

Although I have a major in German, I cannot speak it – proof that I will not quit something despite empirical evidence that I have no ability in that area. Happily I am quite good at history, which is my other major.

Outside of writing/SF conventions, I am shy. Any of you who have been to a book signing or convention I’ve attended will probably be surprised. I have trouble calling people I don’t know on the phone.

I am just starting to breed Arabian horses. Though gray is my least favourite color of horse, the first mare I’ve bred is gray – and I bred her to a gray stallion. Color actually doesn’t mean much to me in horses <grin>.

My husband and I bought an old carousel to restore and populate it with animals. I expect this endeavour to take us ten years.

I drive a Toyota. (Though my daughter’s car is a VW Jetta and we’ve had three other Jettas, two Vanagons, a Eurovan, and a Passat.)

Fair Game, the third instalment of the Alpha Omega series is releasing soon. Cue excited squeals. What can readers expect from this eagerly anticipated release?

If you haven’t been reading the Alpha and Omega books, you need to catch up because things happen in this one that will affect Mercy greatly. Also, Boston, serial killers, werewolves and fae – it’s got to be a fun ride, right?

Your books cover a combination of supernatural creatures, from shifters and vampires, to the fae and ghosts. Which one do you like to write about the most?

Werewolves are my favorite, but this is a trick question. There are so many different kinds of fae to choose from. If you add them all up then I suspect that they top even the werewolves. Especially since, quite often, I can give a nod to old fairy tales that I and about two other people in the world have read.

How did you celebrate when your first book was published?

We bought a Buick with 100,000 miles on it and a salvage title (because it had been caught it a flood in Florida – though we lived in Montana) that didn’t run because it was a pretty color. Rebuilt the engine and then drove it for the next seven years – and every darn time we drove it to my husband’s parent’s house it died (nearest available parts were 70 miles away).

When you started writing, did you ever expect to gain the success you have?

Oh, when my first book was published, I knew it would be a best seller <grin>. By the time I’d published two or three books I was just happy to be published and would never have dreamed that my career would take off the way it has. Oddly enough, I was right, though. When Masques was republished last year it hit the NY Times. So my first book hit the NY Times – fifteen years later <grin>.

What would you say is the best part of your job?

Getting up every day to go play with my imaginary friends and not getting locked up in a funny farm!
You've put Mercy through some tough situations. As an author, how do you handle that?

The best characters take a licking and keep on ticking. It’s not the only purpose of storytelling – but certainly one of them – is to show readers that bad things happen to us all, and it’s possible to move on and still be happy. Fantasy, the kind of fantasy that I write anyway, is about bringing hope to hopeless situations.

You've recently revisited some of your earlier works, like Masques. Did you change anything from the original stories? What made you go back to them?

Masques got a polish that wanted to be a deep sanding to remove all the rough spots – but I was afraid there would be nothing left when I was done. I am a better writer now than I was when I started, and I’m the better part of two decades older. It was difficult not to write an entirely different book – but that wasn’t the point of the exercise. It took me longer to do than if I’d just written a new book, but I’m pleased with the balance of old and new.

Masques had been out of print for a very long time and there was a big demand for it. I also had a sequel written that I liked quite a bit that had never been published. But I didn’t want to republish a book that wasn’t as good as my current books for fear that someone would pick it up and be disappointed. So the solution was to revise the original.

What are your plans for the next Mercy Thompson book?

I’ll start writing it tomorrow and have a better handle on it. Let me just say that I’m very glad not to be the protagonist in an urban fantasy series. Poor Mercy. Vampires, I think, this time. And the afore mentioned events that are going to start snowing trouble down on Mercy and the Columbia Basin Pack.

I think Mercy is a favorite heroine for many people in the UF genre because she seems very real. But which heroine would YOU like to take out for a drink?

I think either Elena (the name of both the werewolf from Kelley Armstrong’s Bitten/Stolen etc and the vampire hunter from Nalini Singh’s Archangel series) would be fun. And relatively safe for all of us.

If Adam could have a "guys night out" with a character from any other book, who would it be and what would they do?

I’m trying to think. Curran (from Ilona Andrew’s Kate Daniels series) would be uncomfortable, at least until they’d worked things out. Harry Dresdeon and Adam would get along just fine – but they don’t have a lot in common (Samuel would play D&D with Harry and his werewolf buddies). I think that Adam would do quite well with either Micah or Jean Claude (from Laurel K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series). He’d go hiking with Micah – or to Les Miserables with Jean Claude.

Thank you so much for stopping by UTC today and sharing with us!

Review: Masques by Patricia Briggs

3.5 Feathers
Masques
by Patricia Briggs
(Sianim # 1)

I want to mention a couple of things before I start getting into the story of this book.  I read the revised version that Ms. Briggs re-released in 2011, not the original version of the book.  This book is really more fantasy than urban fantasy, so it's good to make the distinction with readers.  Now here's what I thought of Masques.

The first thing that I loved was the intro that Ms. Briggs did telling the reader a bit of the story of how she came to work on this book again and re-release it.  It does seem like a project that was dear to her heart, as it was her first real book published, and the old issues had become a bit of a treasure to find.  For us new Briggs fans it was a nice visit into a completely different world than what I'm used to reading by this author.

I'm not really big on fantasy books but this one had an element of connection that worked really well.  Who?  Aralorn and Wolf.  She's a mercenary and she happens to rescue Wolf from certain death.  From that point on they've been emotionally attached and he will go with her and cross her path when she needs him most.

Aralorn is also a shapeshifter and works as a spy as well as a mercenary.  She is assigned with spying on a sorcerer.  Amidst the spying and the inevitable war, Alanorn and Wolf learn more about each other.  I loved their banter and their easy companionship.  They felt effortless together.

I did feel the writing was a bit choppy and the scenes changed a bit abruptly at times, but it didn't take away from enjoying the story.  I am looking forward to Wolfsbane.

Review: On The Prowl by Patricia Briggs, Eileen Wilks, Karen Chance and Sunny

On The Prowl
by Patricia Briggs, Eileen Wilks, Karen Chance and Sunny
(Alpha & Omega # 0.5)

Alpha & Omega - 4.5 Feathers

I haven’t read anything by Patricia Briggs in a long time so it was nice to go back to her writing. I forgot how well she writes. Alpha & Omega was a very quick and easy read!  I thought it was a great start to a new series for Briggs! Anna is a werewolf, an Omega to be exact and under desperate circumstances she finds herself calling the Marrok behind her Alpha’s back.

In comes Charles Cornick, Bran’s son. I found myself liking Charles in the short time it took me to read this. He’s protective, but not overly and he’s got some charm too. There was a good bit of action that I was surprised to read about in such a short read, but of course, I’m not complaining. The only thing that bothered me a little bit was Anna. She’s so shy and submissive, but towards the end, I was already feeling like she was developing as a character already.

I’m excited to read the rest of the series! I can’t wait!

Inhuman - 3.5 Feathers

I haven't read any books in the Lupi series, and this one is supposed to be in the middle. I did struggle to understand a few things, however I managed to enjoy this series quite a bit, and has me intrigued to read the actual series. However, I was a bit disappointed with the ending and that is why my rating went down to 3.5 stars. The characters in this story are likable, as you try to figure out the story. I like that Nathan is not your usual "race", I thought that was interesting.

Buying Trouble - 3.5 Feathers

This is the second time I read something by Karen Chance, and it's again a short story. I do like her writing and keep saying I'll pick up one of her books. Maybe soon. There's a bit of everything in this story and I enjoyed it. There's quite a bit of action, families that go against their own, politics of the Fae. One thing that threw me off was when she changed into her "other" form for the first time and out of nowhere at a most inappropriate time! I had to go back and read that to make sure I understood what was happening. LOL I liked the world, I liked the characters.

Mona Lisa Betwining - No rating

I couldn't get past the first few pages in this story. I didn't like that her true love had just died and here she was running around a forest wanting to have sex with another, while she had someone else offering to have sex with her to give her children. Just couldn't finish the story. Maybe if I had read the books in this series it would all make more sense to me, and I'll eventually give them a try.
