Now, I know what you are thinking, who has time for this, and what a mess to clean up! But I promise you, it takes 15 minutes or less, including the clean-up. And your kids will love it. I bet you will be playing with it too.
Play dough is super easy to make, and very inexpensive. Chances are you already have most of the ingredients in your pantry. Yesterday, my daughter and I made purple play dough. We got this recipe from our kid's preschool teacher:
1 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup salt
2 Tbsp Cream of Tartar
1 cup water
1 Tbsp cooking oil
1-2 tsp food coloring
First mix all the dry ingredients. Then add all the wet ingredients all at once.
Cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. At first it will look like this.
Then it will look like this. When it begins to get "gloppy", as my daughter puts it, you know it's ready.
Scoop it out of the pot, let it cool slightly and begin to work the dough with your hands. It will be sticky, but as it cools it will lose it's stickiness.
Now you are ready for some fun!
Just store it in a plastic baggie. And don't forget to rinse out your pot immediately. Surprisingly, it comes off pretty easily.
Even if you don't have small kids, it is still fun to make! So have fun, and if you try it, let me know how it works for you.

This next photo shows what this room regularly looked like when I had a 1 and a 3 year old. This is only a mild mess. It was usually much, much worse. Note that this sofa is a dumping ground for laundry, and the TV cabinet top dumping ground for clutter. During this phase, I usually stayed out of this room if I could help it.
I'm sure over time this room will revert back to chaos. But at least it will be easier to clean!

So, what summer goals do you have going on right now? I'd love to hear from you!
