Now, I know what you are thinking, who has time for this, and what a mess to clean up! But I promise you, it takes 15 minutes or less, including the clean-up. And your kids will love it. I bet you will be playing with it too.
Play dough is super easy to make, and very inexpensive. Chances are you already have most of the ingredients in your pantry. Yesterday, my daughter and I made purple play dough. We got this recipe from our kid's preschool teacher:
1 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup salt
2 Tbsp Cream of Tartar
1 cup water
1 Tbsp cooking oil
1-2 tsp food coloring
First mix all the dry ingredients. Then add all the wet ingredients all at once.
Cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. At first it will look like this.
Then it will look like this. When it begins to get "gloppy", as my daughter puts it, you know it's ready.
Scoop it out of the pot, let it cool slightly and begin to work the dough with your hands. It will be sticky, but as it cools it will lose it's stickiness. Now you are ready for some fun!
Just store it in a plastic baggie. And don't forget to rinse out your pot immediately. Surprisingly, it comes off pretty easily.
Even if you don't have small kids, it is still fun to make! So have fun, and if you try it, let me know how it works for you.

PlayDoh is definitely fun. I know that when I see it at your house I gravitate towards it. It is very soothing, that nice smooth, cool mixture in between my fingers. I dig it!

I remember making play dough as a kid and loving it. Now its something I get to do with my kids. We made a pretty pink color and shared it with our neighbor friends. I forgot how quick and simple it is to make.

@Rach--The play dough you made last week for pre-school inspired me to start making it again--I had forgotten how fun it is!

Dear Mama C. I don't think my kids will ever out-grow play dough and it's nice to know that there is a simple recipe that allows us to make our own. I bet making the dough will be even more fun that sculpting the dough. We'll try it for sure!

Thanks for the recipe! Today is a great day for a little messy fun at my house! We need to do that more often. I'll let them each pick a color! :) They'll be thrilled. Thanks!

I was given a "homemade" playdough recipe when I first started teaching. I remember one of the ingredients was a KoolAid pack of your choice. I never had the chance to try it, but I always thought it would be fun to have grape-smelling playdough! I think you would have to add the dry KoolAid a little at a time in case too much would cause the dough to dry out. It adds a bit to the expensive of the project, but may be fun for special occasions!

Oops! Forgot to mention that good smelling playdough can be very tempting to very little ones so monitor closely. :-) It will smell better than it tastes!

We love making play dough. We have come to experiment with the colors now and it's really fun. I love playing with it while it's still warm.
Great post.

Thanks I keep meaning to do this but thought it would be a big hassle. Your recipe looks very non-intimidating :)

I haven't made this in years!
We buy a pack of 4 colors at walmart for 1.88. That's hard to beat, but then again, this way you make your own colors.
I bet purple was great fun.
We will make this a winter fun activity for sure. Thanks for the inspiration.
