Hosting Berbuka for Malaysian Friends in Dubai

it’s been a long while since we have makan-makan at our place. the last time was probably one of the boys’ birthday. so that’s why this year we decided to have 2 berbuka puasa makan-makan back to back before i go back to malaysia with the kids for the long winter break.

the main dish for berbuka – my chicken curry. alhamdulillah! jamu orang berbuka kena masak sedap-sedap huhu!

Berbuka With ‘Single’ Malaysian Men in Dubai

the long winter break for school always starts way before ramadhan, so during this time in previous years, i should already be back in ipoh preparing for ramadhan while mr. khairul stayed back in dubai. he would only come back a few days before hari raya.

however, this year ramadhan 2014 was only a week away after the school holiday started so i decided to postpone my trip back to malaysia so that i can finally have a full week of ramadhan with mr khairul before balik kampungdah lama tak berpuasa berbuka sama-sama di awal ramadhan!

when i go back to malaysia without him, he would sometimes be invited over at a friend’s house for berbuka – since he’s ‘single’ during ramadhan haha and THAT is the ‘single man’ that i’m referring to here – *single* men yg married actually tapi wife and kids sume dah awal-awal balik kampung because of the school holiday.

i’m always grateful that there are kind souls out there who would offer delicious malaysian dishes for my husband, so i gladly returned the favor to other *single* men that ramadhan. delicious lauk-pauk from syigim’s kitchen!

the sambal was later smeared all over the eggs *yum!* and for veggie dish i made tumis sayur kacang.

IMG_1039

another yummy appetizer – ikan bilis ngan kacang goreng cili, love it!

IMG_1048

for after terawih – crispy crunchy popiah daging – resepi mak tersayang.

and dessert of course – a sweet, simple pulut jagung

alhamdulillah, nothing satisfies a cook than to see people enjoying their meals and taking 2nd, 3rd helpings!

alhamdulillah, solat terawih at our humble home with saudara mushil as the imam. may it adds berkat to our home.

masyaAllah saudara mushil ended the terawih with a short tazkirah. may we all benefit from his brief words.

 IMG_1075

more dessert! thanks joe for bringing this black forest cake. more yummy stuff to jamu people!

insyaAllah. Allah knows best. salam ramadhan 2014.

Kids & Firecrackers : To Let Them Play or Not?

do you let your kids play with firecrackers? mercun? bunga api cap kucing?

many unfortunate mishaps that we hear or read happened to some who suffered burns and serious wounds (lost of limbs too!) from playing firecrackers are caused by

  • the misuse of firecrackers,
  • wanabe scientists with failed experiments using potentially hazardous materials,
  • and of course, no adult supervision (sadly, some who misuse ARE adults)

so should i not let my kids play firecrackers?

my boys with their cousins : note kazim’s lack of fear for the bunga api!

let’s rewind. further back. 1986. ok stop.

i had an extremely fun experience with firecrackers when i was a kid which became one of my best memories of ramadhan with my siblings. i played with the exact same type of firecrackers – bunga api cap kucing, bunga api asap banyak yang pemegang dia belang-belang merah putih tu, dengan pop-pop bila baling kat lantai bunyi meletop!

i stayed away from mercun – the big huge one shaped like a rocket, or even the small weird ones shaped like a frog. yes, i admit – i was afraid of lighting up firecrackers that will emit extremely loud noises and huge explosions!

my best memories of playing firecrackers during ramadhan :

  1. my sisters and i would play bunga api in the front lawn right by our front door, lit them up with the lit-up panjut (oil lamps) that we hung on the fences.
  2. and mak would even let us ‘cook’ something using a pot, water and hibiscus petal. making flower tea?
  3. and when we balik my dad’s kampung teluk intan for raya, abah’s youngest sis mak cu would be the one supplying bunga api for all of her nephews and nieces! here i enjoyed the loud, explosive mercun, but left it to the older cousins to light them up, while i looked from far behind!
  4. i tagged along with my eldest sister and her wacky friends to a ‘firecracker showdown’ with the boys! we went to a very very dark field – a team on each side, and then take turns to light firecrackers and see who lights up the brightest, and loudest!

so i see no reason of depriving my boys and their young cousins of the same fun that i had when i was their age!

cousins : nuna & kahfi

we just all need to remember and be reminded – SAFETY FIRST, and ALWAYS HAVE ADULT SUPERVISION!

alhamdulillah, the kids were well-behaved – extremely curious and highly excited, and needed a few reminders – but generally careful when they handle firecrackers.

it was fun just watching them, while reminscing my own childhood…

my boys : anong khaleef, kazim & kahfi

my boys just went out of this world with excitement. hihi.

khaleef the big boy was able to play all the time, lighting his own bunga api, and do all sorts of silly stunts with the bigger boys abg haqeem and abg haiqal.

kahfi was a little apprehensive at first – just watching to see whether it’s safe enough for him to handle on his own. slowly, he started to get more curious. soon he was able to hold his own bunga api after i help light it up.

unlike kahfi, kazim was NOT scared at all. he went very close to anyone holding the bunga api. he was very curious from the start, and if i hadn’t stopped him, he would’ve wanted to hold the firecrackers himself. i didn’t let him, until the VERY LAST one, and even then, i was holding his fingers along as he held the bunga api. he was ecstatic!

* * *

i’m glad they had fun. fun in a safe environment! most importantly, this would be one of the things they would remember doing with their brothers, with their cousins, and with their mak and bapak during ramadhan. priceless memories for keeps.

MCOB Dubai Iftar 2012

the malay college old boys (MCOB) of dubai cannot call themselves just MCOB this ramadhan. they’re also seasonal members of PST – persatuan suami tunggal!

most of their wives are like me – home in malaysia for the summer holidays plus spending ramadhan with family in malaysia, plus waiting for hubbies to come home for raya. so their husbands spend iftar and berbuka sessions with each other until the day comes when they fly back to malaysia to reunite with their wives and kiddos.

but in the meantime, they’re Suami Tunggal. uhuk uhuk. so sebak.

shon v84, shamsul v86. kay v96, zaim v82, suhaimi v00

as always during ramadhan, the mcobs of dubai get together for berbuka. this year, they had it at this awesome thai place called ‘papa junior’ near dragon mart. click here for my full review including tantalizing pictures of the delicious lauk of our choices.

far into the night, they were joined by another mcob – bro kazan from batch 86 who was on transit in dubai on his way back to malaysia from london. click here for his last visit to dubai, last year.

hmm, memang dah jodoh. the one day that he was on transit to dubai, was THE day that the mckk boys had their get-together for berbuka, and can all hang out with him at the same time. the speret koleq has an aura that even i can’t understand! hihi.

well, welcome home to those already on their way. bon voyage to the rest, and may you arrive safely to your loved ones.

the boys miss you, bapaknye!

How Hot is Dubai in Ramadhan?

alhamdulillah i am celebrating ramadhan in malaysia. however, my other half is struggling in the heat of the summer in dubai. how hot can it get in dubai? let the picture speaks for itself!

this is taken by mr. khairul in the daytime. temperature was a scorching 55 degrees! according to UAE labor law, anyone working outdoors will be banned from working outside between 12.30pm-3.00pm between 15 june to 15 september. companies found to be breaking the regulation will be fined 15,000 dirham (RM12,800).

…and if you think that THAT is hot enough, perhaps you’d also think that the night would be gentler to the people and gets colder – NOT! this was taken by mr. khairul just last few nights, and the temperature shown was 49 degrees.

49 degrees. at night! ouch, that’s pretty darn HOT!

* * *

may Allah grant patience and perseverance to my mr. khairul and all our malaysian buddies in dubai in facing the summer ramadhan in such hot temperature. amin!

(time sahur minum air banyak dan jangan lupa kurma ok! pemberi tenaga!)

Iftar @ Italiannies : So Good So Share!

two great things about eating at italiannies :

1) yummy italian dishes AND 2) its HUGE portion. no wonder its tagline is ‘so good, so share’ – because the portion is definitely enough to be shared with 3-4 of you. so last weekend we went to italiannies at the curve to SHARE few dishes for iftar.

in fact, last few years we had iftar right here at italiannies the curve to with abah and umi. click here for my full review of the place.

DSC00378

thanks to my baby sis and her fiance faiz for the terrific treat! yum!

DSC00371

for starters, we ordered this tasty treat – our favorite, super-crispy fried calamari that’s arguably one of the best i’ve eaten. really. rugi takde nasik putih dengan air asam!

DSC00377

for my *italian* boys, this plate of spaghetti bolognese with two huge meatballs (meatballs that we CANNOT finish – tapau!) this plate of spaghetti will satisfy any spaghetti-lover. delicious as a good spaghetti should be, sweet-sour tomato-rich bolognese sauce without being too sour or not thick enough. highly recommended. my boys absolutely LOVE this.

DSC00379

what i came here for – beef lasagna at italiannies. i must say, quite disappointed with the texture AND taste. the texture is too thick and compact, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but personally i like my lasagna to be soft and melts in the mouth with all the richness of the cheesy bechamel sauce cross with tomato-ish bolognese sauce. yum. this one doesn’t really do that –

plus, i think there’s TOO MUCH CHEESE (yes, i’m actually complaining about TOO MUCH CHEESE eventhough i LOVE CHEESE) because this makes the lasagna so salty! we ended up not finishing this, and tapau it for sahur!

DSC00373

this is also my all-time favorite – fresh crunchy salad with all sorts of thingamajig that go with it. delicious. it’s got everything – veggies, meat AND fruits! green lettuce tossed with yummy grilled chicken and crispy croutons – and, get this : cut-up grapes AND mangoes! and they all danced so well together in the special italiannies salad dressing. i’d order this everytime!

* * *

DSC00374

DSC00381

my cheeky boys : being their usual self. hihi.

thanks again azi and faiz for the scrumptuous italian iftar at italiannies!

oh, and did i mention that with every main course that you order, you’ll get a kid’s meal for free. so we got the boys an extra plate of spaghetti carbonara white sauce (which their ‘mak su’ so conveniently finished, hihi) and a plate of freshly fried chicken fingers. i’d highly recommend you guys get the spaghetti carbonara white sauce because the portion is huge for a kid’s meal, and is oh-so-rich-and-thick-and cheesy!

yay! so where to next?

Funny Story : Smile in Ramadhan!

got this from my sister who shared it from yasmin mogahed’s facebook page. hihi.

two christian missionaries, David and Michael, were lost in a scorching desert, dying of thirst and hunger when they saw a mosque up front.

David said: “Michael, let’s pretend we are Muslims. otherwise, we will not get any food or water and we will die. my name will be Ahmed. what will be your name?”

Michael refused to change his name.

when both of them reached the mosque, the Imam received them well and asked their names.

David: “my name is Ahmed.”

Michael: “my name is Michael.”

the Imam turned to his helpers and said: “please bring food and water for Michael.” then he turned to David and said: “brother Ahmed, Ramadan Mubarak.

honesty prevails, so do not lie yah! ok chill, read, smile or laugh, it’s just a joke – have a pleasant ramadhan, people!

KLCC : Best Kenny Rogers for Iftar

both my baby sisters work near KLCC so it was just easier to buka puasa somewhere there. we ended up at kenny rogers in KL convention center – that memorable place where i had a date with anuar zain last april. hihi. klik sini untuk cerita penuh!

oppp lari topik pulak.

let me just state for the record that i had a great time breaking fast with my sisters. loved it. it’s hard to get all three together because of their crazy working hours – but here we are. ramadhan miracle!

DSC00365

syida, me, azi – sisters!

i’d say if you wanted to buka puasa at ANY kenny rogers, this is a great one to go to :

1) the surau is practically next door – not right next but in a few steps and you’re there. fairly spacious, very comfy, with enough telekung and sejadah to use

2) it’s in KL convention center which is connected to KLCC. most people would just check out makan places in KLCC for iftar, leaving THIS kenny rogers less crowded. some people comes at 7.15 and still able to get seats

3) i don’t know about other kenny rogers, but in this branch, if you get your side-dishes mixed up or got the wrong one – instead of changing your plate, they would just GIVE you an extra bowl of that side-dish. wah! rezeki bulan ramadhan!

DSC00370

berbuka with the my two favorite couples again – my baby sisters and my bros-in-law. bakal pengantin azot and faiz; and pengantin basi syidot and nash. i just sat at the head of the table, like a CEO. haha.

oh, and yes, it’s just me. mr. khairul is back in dubai to resume work, and we’ll reunite a few days before raya. missing him. hope he reads this.

MCOBA Dubai Iftar 2011 @ Abg Zaim’s

coming back to dubai after cuti-cuti malaysia, i was immediately hit with a list of berbuka dates with our dubai friends. one of them is the iftar with the mcobs (malay college old boys) in dubai held at abang zaim’s house.

to abg zaim and kak rozina; thanks for hosting this scrumptious berbuka feast!

SNC01772

from left : rashdan v89 (green t), zaim v82, faisal shon v84, kay v96, hassanal v90, suhaimi v00

mr. khairul is really big on anything associated with his beloved school mckk, so iftar with his seniors here in dubai is really a must. this year they welcomed another addition to the pack – a junior from the class of 2000, suhaimi. welcome, bro!

mr. khairul, you’re no longer the *baby* of the group! haha.

on the other hand, we’re saddened by the news that hassanal and wife hazleen are leaving dubai for good – work commitment. farewell, dear friends. for mr. khairul and hassanal, they will always have the maroon tie that binds!

SNC01774

with kak muna & kak rozina

as for me, i’m so thankful to Allah for bestowing me the kind of friendship that we have; tempat bermanja and bergelak ketawa as i had just left malaysia and my loved ones.. sob sob. thanks kak muna and kak rozina, for your warmth and kindness!

SNC01766SNC01767

note for self : taking pictures during berbuka is really impossible! you’re too busy filling your tummies! so all i’ve got are the ‘after’ pictures – plates nearly empty, bowls halfway rummaged. we had nasi putih with few lauks – i especially loved the tomyam! and we also had laksa – with homemade laksa noodle by abg zaim’s son! how cool is that?

delicious meal! alhamdulillah…

SNC01763SNC01765

serious mode, focusing on the words of wisdom from the seniors…

SNC01769

…and yet, never forget to laugh!

the boys? they STILL talk about school. no matter how many hundred times they meet. even the wives were perplexed! oh well, let them be. till we meet for raya, brothers and sisters!

Duit & Ramadhan ~ Dulu & Sekarang : Cabaran #2 Contest iPad Mysuperkids

pegang aku kuat-kuat ya. mari kita merentas masa…

* * *

anak-anak sa-karang, kalau udah dapat ber-puasa penoh, apa upah-nya? RM30? RM300? dapat x-box?

da-hulu tidak adha istilah upah duet kalau bisa ber-puasa penoh. bapak men-didek anak-anak ber-puasa bila tiba bulan ramadhan karena ia tuntut-an ugama. dan hanya orang yang ber-puasa bisa dudok me-nikmati hidang-an yang lebeh istimewa. yang tak ber-puasa hendak-lah tunggu atau makan ber-sendiri-an. sa-masa ramadhan da-hulu kala, duet bukan-lah ukur-an. yang anak-anak mahu-kan ia-lah ber-buka ramai-ramai se-keluarga. ini baru-lah meriah, di-samping men-jalani ibadah ber-puasa!

* * *

sudah-kah kamu mem-bayar zakat?

* * *

sa-karang ini, nampak duet 30 sen ber-tabur-an pon pandang sa-belah mata…

* * *

* * *

* * *

selamat ber-puasa!

Ramadhan in Dubai : Five Fun Facts

i’m still in malaysia, people – but my other significant half is in dubai. jadi maaf jika hati ni asyik teringat dubai! here are five interesting bits about ramadhan in dubai UAE (united arab emirates) :

* * *

1) in dubai, it is illegal to give to people who beg for cash in the streets!

but don’t be quick to judge – dubai is NOT being cruel – it’s just that ramadhan is the time when beggars suddenly pop out to take advantage of people’s charitable sentiments.

if you’re thinking, “..but i’m just being ikhlas (sincere) and niat untuk sedekah”, maybe you can channel your sadaqah through established means, like charity to orphanages, or offer food supplies to old folks home. if approached by a beggar, you could also suggest that they go to any charitable organization and seek help there.

personally, i’ve never actually seen a beggar along the streets of dubai, but we did once approached by a dude in a car, along with his family, telling us his sob stories, and asking for any dirham to spare. apparently, this is just one of the few methods of ‘scamming’ that had been going on in the UAE.

“what do you do when approached by beggars? police bodies in the UAE advise people to report any such cases immediately, and promise that action will be taken against beggars because not only do they bother people and distort the country's image, many of them are also involved in illegal activities.”

read full report here.

* * *

2) restaurants in dubai want to serve or deliver food BEFORE iftar? go apply – for just dhs5,060 fee!

by law, restaurants are not allowed to serve or deliver food before breaking of fast UNLESS they received permission from the DED (the department of economic development in dubai). how to get the permission? they have to apply – for a fee of dh5.060!

and even with the permission, they would have to cover the dining area – for example :

  • i noticed that starbucks in ibn battuta mall was open, but pulled their roll-down doors halfway down
  • a cafe in ibn battuta had only one light open; right above the counter
  • a restaurant in dubai marina was open, but dimmed their lights

"..any restaurant or coffee shop that serves snacks can apply to DED to get this permission for a dh5,060 fee. and those restaurants that are found violating the rules by delivering food without permission will face heavy penalties for this illegal practice.."

read more here.

* * *

3) cannon fired to indicate berbuka time!

now this is just the coolest. just when i thought that beating the tabuh to indicate breaking of fast was a thing of the past, here comes sharjah state organizing cannon-firing to tell people that it’s time to break fast. (sharjah is one of the 7 states in the UAE, just like dubai).

i wish dubai would do the same!

“police in sharjah…announced that cannons will be fired to help people know iftar times at locations across the emirate during ramadan.”

read further here.

* * *

4) 9am – 3pm is a normal, daily working hour? only during ramadan in dubai!

some call the law a bliss from the heat of summer ramadan. some say it halts the productivity of companies for that single month. call it what you want – that’s the law. muslims or non-muslims alike, ALL must abide to this rule.

there are arguments saying that ramadan shouldn’t be used as a reason to cut-short working hours, or to rest more. ramadan or not, the show must go on. that should be part of the challenge for muslims during ramadan – the fact that we have to work just the same as the rest of the year; just the same as non-muslims who can eat and drink.

when i was working in malaysia, i was just given an hour earlier to leave office; basically to beat the traffic, and be home in time for breaking fast.

“..employees should not be asked to put more than six hours during ramadan regardless of their religion, and private sector institutions requesting their non-muslim employees to work normal hours are violating the law of the land, the ministry of labour warned.”

hey, don’t get me wrong – if it’s the law, it’s the law. i can only enjoy mr. khairul’s company when he comes home really early, take care of the kids while i fix the dishes for breaking fast!

Ramadan Feature for Weekender

5) this is the first ramadhan celebrated during the hot summer time, since 1978!

2011 – delivery service, fridge to store food, air-conditioner and iftar at home. 1978 – riding camels to get groceries, no air-conditioner, and iftar was a social event done with everyone in the neighbourhood.

but these two years share one common trait – during both years, muslims fast for more than 14 hours, in the scorching heat of summer.

mr. khairul stumbled upon this well-written article; sharing the fascinating experiences during summer ramadhan in dubai. iftar feast with the entire community, soaking clothes to remain cool during the heat, man beating drums to wake people up for sahur, and many more interesting anecdotes.

“it has been 33 years since ramadan last fell in the heat and humidity of august…this year, as in 1978, muslims will fast for more than 14 hours a day…

"we never kept track of the passing hours in those days," mr mohammed said. "we would only say that the days are long and we would just get through them determinedly and patiently. i recall that one man in my family would toil away all day under the blazing sun and would sometimes faint of thirst and hunger. many advised him to eat and break his fast, but he availed himself of patience and persistence and held on."

* * *

hmm, if i were to write 5 fun facts about ramadhan in malaysia, what would my list be ye? *think*

* * *

to my other half, missing you very much. counting the days we will reunite in the middle of ramadan!
