Happy 35th Birthday, Honey Cookiedough!

for your 35th birthday, my dearest husband, I’m compiling all the poems I’ve written for your birthday for the past 5 years. enjoy. oh, and happy birthday!

written in march 2009, for his 30th birthday

from the hingus days of penang free
bicycle-ride fun and full of glee
to teen-angst years of mckk
so much work and serious play

need to grow need to get more
off to the States a lot is in store
challenges, experience and such he did get
living life full with aint no regret

in ipoh was the chance meeting
love at first sight hearts a-fleeting
9 years later a happy family at hand
three-boys is more than he could stand!

from penang to kl the humble days
to awesome dubai now he stays
such a leap for this beach jock
at thirty-5 you still rock!

penned by : your cute wife~ with love!

you conquered all, be proud be jolly!

thirty years of life

and two boys you adore

written in 2012 for his 33rd birthday

33 you're today
i always write sweet rhymes
this birthday goes some other way
a cuckoo poem this time

33 is one cool number
because it's double three
i really need to slumber
i'm so sleepy-ee.

33 has got essence
you've lived life wild and wise
this poem gonna make no sense
i'm hungry.

33 is thirtythree
when you spell it yes it's true
this poem may be weird you see
but know that I LOVE YOU!

Z is for Zero-sin
It is the way we each begin,
Free from wordly sin
So, don't let yourself forget,
Keep out of the devil's threat!

Happy 32nd Birthday, Honey!

Puisi : Anak Padang Pasir

anak padang pasir

di satu padang pasir dalam perjalanan ke oman
langit sangat biru
di balik balam-balam awan yang bagai kapas.

di atas tanah perang itu
sepohon pokok sepi di hujung hidupnya
ditemani anak-anak kecil riang ria.

ia tidak sunyi lagi untuk hari itu.

Help! I'm Blogged Out!

sometimes, when there are no words...

help! i'm blogged out
by syigim

help! help! somebody please
i ain’t got no idea
my brain is stuck, my thoughts are dry
i’m lost for words, i fear

my blog has no new posts
for many many days
i need a topic now
please help me find a way!

should i write about those ants
lining up in one long row
or do you have better ideas
any topic i could borrow?

i quickly read the papers
for any breaking news
something i could share
some thoughts, a lot or few

then i go bloghopping
to read what others wrote
perhaps i could get some idea
and make a mental note

my kids say something funny
i should blog right away
i listen, laugh, record and write
whatever that they say!

talking might be good
so i called my elder sister
an idea could come up
out of the news from her

i could just get a picture
a really pretty shot
find words that go along with it
but ideas i have not!

i guess it’s best to write
a topic that i love
food? travels? kids? anuar zain?
or all of the above!

first i need a title
must be catchy, must be nice
contain key-words google-able
put zest to it, and spice

now it’s time to write
a short one is okay
describe the experience or feelings
is there any other way?

i need a nap, i need a rest!
a short break would be good
perhaps i need to go and raid
the kitchen for some food

after a while, after a sec
back to my blog i go
i type, i look, i delete, i stare
still no words out, oh no!

(first appeared in mombloggersplanet. click here for more of my writings on blogs, blogs and erm..blogging.)

oh, by the way, in two weeks, i'm turning 31. wow.

Mak's Little Soldiers

colonel khaleef, captain kahfi & cadet kazim

mak's little soldiers
by syigim

soldiers should wear green
and must look really mean
we fight, we kick, we punch
and eat bad guys for lunch!

colonel khaleef heads the boys
in puting back the books and toys
captain kahfi makes a mess
spilling water and his food no less!

cadet kazim follows order
making sure things are proper
after that he sleeps all day
and then wakes up only to play!

we may look very small
it's no problem at all
there are the three of us
warn those who makes a fuss

so those bad guys out there
be very scared, beware
do not disturb our mak
and even our bapak!

hiyark!

If the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) Visited You

i wish i had written this. too good not to be shared. read and reflect!

If the Prophet Muhammad visited you,
Just for a day or two;
If he came unexpectedly
I wonder what you’d do.

Oh! I know you’d give your nicest room
To such an honored guest;
And all the food you’d serve to him
Would be the very best.

And you would keep assuring him,
You’re glad to have him there;
Your hospitality would be beyond belief
And service beyond compare.

But… when you saw him coming,
Would you meet him at the door
With arms outstretched in welcome
To your honored visitor?

Or… would you have to change your
Clothes before you let him in?
Or hide some magazines and put
The Qur’an where they had been?

Would you still watch movies
On your trusty TV set?
Or would you rush to switch it off
Before he gets upset?

Would you turn off the radio
And hope he hadn’t heard?
And wish you hadn’t uttered
That last loud nasty word?

Would you hide you worldly music
And instead take Islamic books out?
Could you let him walk right in,
Or would you rush about?

And, I wonder… if the Prophet spent
A day or two with you,
Would you go right on doing the things
That you always do?

Would you go right on saying the things
You always used to say?
Would life for you continue
As it does from day to day?

Would your family conversation
Keep its usual pace?
Or would you find it hard each meal
To say a table grace?

Would you keep up each and every
Prayer, forcing back a frown?
And would you always jump up early
For every prayer at dawn?

Would you sing the songs you always do
And read the books you read?
And let him know things on which
Your mind and spirit feed?

Would you take the Prophet with you
Everywhere you normally go?
Or would you , maybe, change your plan
Just for a day or so?

Would you be glad to have him meet
Your very closest friends?
Or would you hope they’d stay away
Until his visit ends?

Would you be glad to have him stay
Forever on and on?
Or would you sigh with great relief
When he at last was gone?

It might be interesting to know
The things you would do
If the Prophet Muhammad, in person,
Came to spend some time with you.

Syair Tiga Putera

if you're my facebook friend, you might have already seen these shots of my three kay boys. with kahfi constant moving and amusement looking at a confused kazim, and khaleef singing 'the itsy bitsy spider' at the top of his lungs - it was a tough shot!

this was the best i could get, people!

the first ever shot of big brother khaleef, younger brother kahfi and new baby brother kazim. a world premiere, so to speak! hihi.

enjoy my syair, a malay classical poem with a sing-song style when read. man, how long has it been since you last read a syair, eh? in your form 5 BM class? dedicated to my boys, it's entitled 'the poem of three princes' - enjoy!

* * *

Syair Tiga Putera
karya syigim

tersebutlah kisah satu cerita
tiga putera permata bonda
alangkah kacak tidak terkata
siapa terpandang pasti teruja

putera sulong bermata bundar
khaleef namanya bijak dan tegar
untuk adik sayang tak pudar
bantu bonda kala senang dan sukar

putera tengah nakal sekali
si manja kahfi nama diberi
bising bergolek lompat berlari
lagak dan ketawa jadi penyeri

inilah dia putera bongsu
ahli istana yang paling baru
nama pilihan kazim yang satu
kesayangan abang sentiasa selalu

pesan bonda dengarlah sayang
rajin belajar hidup kan senang
berbuat baik sesama orang
ingat Ilahi jiwa kan tenang

no words could describe the incredible joy and syukur i feel when i see this photo. as silly as it seems - with kahfi's feet up in the air, kazim's awe, khaleef's cheekiness and mr. khairul's sudden 'interference' - if i had arms as wide i would hug 'em all at once in an instant.

may Allah never let me forget how lucky i am!

khaleef, kahfi, and kazim are my treasures, khairul is the chest, and i hold the key!

i've not been too long in this blogging business. i just started in 2008, when my life changes as we moved to dubai and i started becoming a stay-at-home-mom. so there were so, so many trips and travels that i didn't blog about.

i felt so rugi looking back at my holiday pictures because i forgot so many interesting details about that particular holiday. after korek-korek, i'd like to share with you some of my holiday destinations, with a few great memories to share.

with that i would like to thank my abah and my cookiedough for all the trips - i'm so lucky to have a father and husband who enjoy travelling!

where : great ocean road, victoria, australia
when : circa 2004
who : with abah and my youngest si azi
what : most beautiful, scenic coastline drive ever. sepanjang jalan nampak batu-batu besar di tengah lautan - grotto (caves in the middle of sea), the 'twelve apostles' (12 huge standing rock formations)
memorable moments : it was extremely cold, and we weren't prepared in terms of our clothings! however, the view was oh, so breathtaking. cantik ya amat!
tips : check the weather forecast first before going!

* * *

where : musandam, oman
when : jan 2010
who : with mr. khairul, my boys and in-laws
what : dhow cruise along scenic rock mountains, and the high possibility of seeing dolphins
memorable moments : hanging out on an arabic dhow, enjoying the magnanimous sight of the rock mountains. and the sight of the jumping dolphins were priceless! oh, and also learned a new word, 'fjord' which are rock mountains.
tips : don't worry if the dhow moves when it sees doplhins in a distance - they just want the dolphins to swim along with the boat!

where : melaka, malaysia
when : circa 2006
with : mr. khairul and khaleef
what : historical city which is listed as UNESCO world heritage sites, a magical place to go back in time during the malaccan sultanate period
memorable moments : our first full-fledged family vacation. also, got to know the BEST ikan bakar place in the world - sg. duyung.
tips : if you got lost, ask the locals for directions. very helpful. one of them actually rode his bike to lead us to sg. duyung!

when : circa 2004
with : kak arin (driver), kak laily, and the rest of melbourne msia hall girls
what : an open air museum with a whole town re-created to look like scenes from the 'gold rush' era, where gold was first discovered in ballarat. the shops, furnitures, roads, people all look like they came from the past!
memorable moments : digging for real gold at one of the man-made creek in the middle of the 'museum'.
tips : nak jimat, bring your own sandwiches and drinks. also map your way well as you walk so that you cover every single stop including the comboy 'schools' and 'bowling alley'.

where : sky tower, auckland, new zealand
when : early 2005
who : with abah, syimot, syidot and azot. i think yong didn't join because she just had baby haqeem.
what : an observation tower in the middle of auckland CBD, the tallest free-standing structure in the southern hemisphere, the 14th tallest in the world.
memorable moments : the main observation level has a particular spot on the floor which has a 38mm thick glass section, giving a view straight to the ground! scary gile berdiri atas glass tu! also, met a group of 4 japanese girls who wanted to take pictures with us! comel diorang!

* * *

where : pulau perhentian, terengganu
when : early 2008 (first trimester with kahfi)
who : with mr. khairul and khaleef
what : white sandy beach, and crystal-clear water where snorkeling is one of the best experiences with beautiful corals and marine life.
memorable moments : well, for mr. khairul, it's diving into a 3-storey deep ocean sea-bed with baby sharks, 'nemo' and many more. also, finding out that turtles can actually swim really fast! for me, the boat ride to the pulau was super-scary - the strong waves made the ride extremely bumpy so i was very, very afraid that khaleef might get flung out, or i might have a miscarriage since it's quite early in the pregnancy!

a page for you, a page for me
a page for comments, for all to see
so watch your words, mind your manners,
be kind be polite, don’t be a whiner

you disagree, you disapprove
it’s good to share it’s a fine move
but if you don’t have good words to say
just keep it in well it’s okay

a perfect comment i’ll tell you now
support or suggest, or appreciate that’s how
short and fast, and to the point
evoke good thoughts and others will join

when you read a blogpost, a story
make an interesting observatory
train your brain to think of something
so your comments won’t be empty with nothing!

blogging is a networking tool
use it well, or you’re the fool
make your presence felt by all
leave a comment for one, for all

when your comment other bloggers see
they wonder who is he or she
if they like what they see, they click
on their blog they will put your link!

the comments page can be put to use
don’t forget don’t let it loose
from list of comments, ideas will come
expand it into a blogpost, then you add some

an old favorite blog is nice to go to
but do go and visit new blogs too
new ideas you will get, new friends you will make
reflect on new thoughts, stir, move and shake

say your piece, and join the shout
expose yourself and try to reach out
the blogosphere is for all to be
the comments space is for you for me

but something you must know it meant
not all blogpost attracts comments
next time you know what works what’s not
you can write stuff that others like a lot!

you frown, you rejoice, you sigh, you smile
when you see in ur blog, comments in a pile
to each comment you should respond
your exchange of words can go beyond!

you like the attention of yes you do
now it’s time to treat other blogs too
take the time to go and visit
after you read, leave a comment in it!

To the Sharifuddin Sisters

untitled
by syigim

so far, so long, a million of mile,
someone, somewhere dreams of a smile,
i look for ants to keep myself busy,
i wouldn't i won't miss them like crazy.

each night, each noon, each minute of day,
i long for their chats, their talk, their say,
their face in my eyes, their voice in my mind,
another same company, nowhere can i find.

the first is feminine, a teacher so sweet,
but wait till you hear, wait till you meet,
her nuna is chubby, cute and cuddly,
with the H brothers so loud and ever so bubbly.

no words can describe, no vocab too fit,
the second is bursting with charm and great wit,
weirdo no doubt, wacky most certainly,
without her the party of 5 would be gloomy.

the brain of the 5 is in the middle
a princess she has, no wait, she got a couple,
she's the mami jarum too, the gossip queen
sharing things that she heard, things that she's seen.

the fourth one is doing 'time' down under,
a student, a tourist, a traveler, an adventurer,
on trains, on busses, on trams and on foot,
an attitude she has and a smart head to boot.

the clown in the family is the little one,
funny, cheery, lots of laugh, lots of fun,
though youngest she is, the tallest of all,
with her in the 5 life's really quite a ball!

today, tomorrow, for the rest of the year,
i count, i wait for the day to come near,
more gifts more souvenir, more goodies to pack,
another flight home, another trip back.

star light star bright, i wish i might,
see them soon, and the 5 will unite,
friends, buddies, sisters at most,
without them i'll surely be at a lost!

teringat kat uia, we were analysing a poem about loss, and missing someone. kehilangan. kerinduan. when my lecturer asked, "what is the theme of the poem?" and picked one guy from the lot. he answered, rather unsurely -

"err. the theme of the poem...is...missing."

missing? ilang ke mane? haha. ok enough iklan.

miss you, sis!

Guru O Guru

happy teacher's day to teachers everywhere! especially to teacher syimee who left the high-paying rat race, workstation and desk job to devote herself to the joy of teaching, instead of someone who resorted to teaching just because it's the last thing that they could do. this is a person who chooses to be a teacher because she can, not because she had to.

and doing a very good job at it too! also, most importantly, she's enjoying it. i'm so proud of you teacher syimee!

teacher syimee surrounded by her students in flower costume

to my primary class-teacher puan zamrudah who believed that i could be more, to puan cheah who taught english and english literature, my fav subjects in school (duuh!), to puan hasnah for her sincere care for her students and mr. ooi for his warmth, puan chan for her loveliness that makes lab sessions a little less boring, to mr. cheang for his coolness in showing how easy maths should be.

teacher's day is not complete without this moving poem by the great usman awang. dedicated to yong, my teachers at methodist girls' school, ipoh, mr. khairul's teachers at penang free and the malay college, lecturers at uia and uni melb.

to my just10 pals cikgu syuhada, cikgu elmy, lecturers madam niraku; my buddies madam put, madam aisha, mr. abby ashraf and my uncle rosli, also teacher aida in winchester school, dubai not forgetting aunties jo, jennifer, dora, haida and mohana - just to name a few! selamat hari guru, semua!

Guru o Guru
Usman Awang

BERBURU ke padang datar
Dapat rusa belang kaki
Berguru kepala ajar
Ibarat bunga kembang tak jadi

Dialah pemberi paling setia
Tiap akar ilmu miliknya
Pelita dan lampu segala
Untuk manusia sebelum manjadi dewasa.

Dialah ibu dialah bapa juga sahabat
Alur kesetiaan mengalirkan nasihat
Pemimpin yang ditauliahkan segala umat
Seribu tahun katanya menjadi hikmat.

Jika hari ini seorang Perdana Menteri berkuasa
Jika hari ini seorang Raja menaiki takhta
Jika hari ini seorang Presiden sebuah negara
Jika hari ini seorang ulama yang mulia
Jika hari ini seorang peguam menang bicara
Jika hari ini seorang penulis terkemuka
Jika hari ini siapa saja menjadi dewasa;
Sejarahnya dimulakan oleh seorang guru biasa
Dengan lembut sabarnya mengajar tulis-baca.

Di mana-mana dia berdiri di muka muridnya
Di sebuah sekolah mewah di Ibu Kota
Di bangunan tua sekolah Hulu Terengganu
Dia adalah guru mewakili seribu buku;
Semakin terpencil duduknya di ceruk desa
Semakin bererti tugasnya kepada negara.

Jadilah apa pun pada akhir kehidupanmu, guruku
Budi yang diapungkan di dulang ilmu
Panggilan keramat "cikgu" kekal terpahat
Menjadi kenangan ke akhir hayat

i've taught really big dudes. and really small dudes. boys who are becoming men, and boys who still acts like babies. so to those who says that teaching teenagers are more pain-staking than teaching children or vice versa - they are very wrong.

teaching is like custom-made for the people we're helping to educate. be it 25 or 5, each comes with their own idiosyncracies, challenges and brand of amusement. rebellious teens or kids with temper-tantrums. older kids who confide in you about their problems or little children who tells you about their weekend at the zoo. students who make you proud by finally getting the A they had wanted, or students who make you beam when they can finally write an 'A' without help.

there's no way i could squeeze the amount of memorable anecdotes i have teaching teens and children alike in this posting - from cuddling teen couples at the back of a lecture hall to a boy who fell asleep as i taught him to read! from coaching the student-emcees for a convocation night to guiding the children to pronounce their elocution properly. priceless memories!

but i have pictures!

with my students on their convocation day. can you spot me?

with my students on our trip to pangkor - yes, that's me in the orange t-shirt!

i really miss teaching. being in a class with young minds waiting to be filled with knowledge and experiences. i love the preparation. the lesson planning, thinking of the most creative ways to run the class. the reporting. (ok, not so much the reporting hihi) the post-mortem. the works!

ms e, please save a space for me coz i still want to teach when i come back!

check out these postings too!
