Hawker Food @ myNEWScafe @ 1 Utama

“eat, drink, read.”

that’s the tagline of ‘myNEWScafe’ at one utama. the idea is that they offer patrons a wide variety of magazines to choose from – to read while they eat.

now this is not really a breakthrough concept haha – a lot of restaurants have magazines lying around for customers to read, but in myNEWScafe, this is their central concept, as you can see from one of the pictures i have below, where a long magazine rack adorned the whole side of one of the walls.

my youngest sis azot and i went shopping for home stuff the other day and had lunch here, as i wanted something malaysian to eat – rice dish, noodle dish, anything of the same sort!

i was craving for a rice dish, but i can’t help myself ordering this when i saw it on the menu : ‘penang fried kuey teow’. i LOVE kuey teow! for the record, i would say that this kuey teow meets my palate and i find it quite tasty. however, i knew my beloved penang boy mr. khairul would cringe even at the SIGHT of the plate, let alone the taste!

it’s really NOT like penang char kuey teow (i KNOW) – the taste is slightly off yet still yummy, and the texture is different, but this is satisfactory nevertheless. just got to remind myself not to suggest this dish to that penang boy! hihi

this is for the boys : two plates of ‘yong chow fried rice’. you can never go wrong with yong chow fried rice because it’s such a deliciously simple dish. unless you screw it up with too much salt! this one is a little bit salty than i would like, but it’s still tasty. the portion is acceptable, and it’s served with slices of cucumbe and cut up veggies, a few praws and egg sunny side up. not bad.

my youngest sister picked a rice dish too. this is ‘myNEWS fried rice’ – a spicier fried rice served with fried chicken wings, sambal and egg sunny side up. another really simple dish and equally tasty. this can easily satisfy any hungry yuppies on their rushed lunch hour!

other than local delicacies like paprik rice, asam laksa or singapore beehoon, myNEWScafe also has western dishes such as chicken chop and lamb cutlets – and they’re so cheap! i will definitely try that next!

nice comic-book art corner here in myNEWScafe

my sister said this place is packed during lunch time because it sells local food that is comparitively cheap, and fairly delicious. kalau dah takde idea mane nak makan kat OU, do try!

Gorgeous Garden @ One Utama

‘garden’ at one utama is actually a restaurant offering various types of dishes from western like lamb shanks and spaghetti, to local yummies like nasi lemak.

(yes people, i’m back home in malaysia!)

when you walk within the concrete walls of one utama and suddenly see greneries with lawn chairs and green shrubs growing across the ceiling; you’re in the right place. that’s ‘garden’ – which explains the name! what’s interesting about ‘garden’ is the interior decor. you eat there and you feel like eating inside of an english house that overlooks the garden of beautiful shrubs and trellises. beautiful place to eat.

what to eat?

the menu is surprisingly extensive. i thought that this place only serves western food, but it has italian food, and even local delicacies as well. the list of drinks is inviting too.

i was feeling a little out of this world that day, and decided to order something i don’t usually order – i went with fish and chips.

DSC07572

mine was fish and chips. i was a bit disappointed when i first saw the fish, as i expected it would be yellow tempura-fried. but this looks like bread-crumbs. but the first taste proved that it was equally delicious. a simple dish that can fairly satisfy fans of fish and chips – if you don’t mind the bread-crumbs.

DSC07574

it’s served with veggies, slices of lemon for taste, and of course the ‘chips’ or fries. the portion of fries is worth mentioning – it was huge! loved it.

my youngest sis azi went for this italian dish of spaghetti in white sauce with beef bacon i think. delicious as it could be, and she liked it. this was served with lettuce and some cut-up fresh fruits.

DSC07584

my future bro-in-law faiz picked this beautifully-decorated dish of lamb chops. it was very delicious! yes, i had a bite and it was really well-marinated, the texture was tender and the mashed potato just complements the meat. the funny thing was it was served with this kangkong. hmm. really a first for me. otherwise, it was a really good dish.

DSC07571

we also ordered this small plate of fried calamari. the calamari was freshly fried, and tasted good but i just wish that they didn’t spread the dip on the calamari. should’ve put it on the side instead of on the calamari.

DSC07569

i can’t remember the name of this drink but it was delicious! it’s like crushed-ice mango, with fruit coctail thrown in. so yummy.

‘garden’ is at one utama, lower ground floor of the new wing. it’s a beautiful place to eat, serves fairly good food. try it if you want to unwind after a shopping spree!

Wonderlicious Waffle World

big fat hot fresh waffles, plump scoop of my favorite ice-cream flavor, a trickle of hershey chocolate syrup, slices of banana, and a little cherry on top to make perfect the dish - excellent!

a year away from malaysia, this is still one of my favorite dessert spots in one utama shopping mall - the waffle world.

usually after a heavy meal of nasi ayam at the foodcourt, or laksa at penang village, or a mcd meal, we'll go jalan-jalan first before making a pit-stop for dessert. and usually, it's waffle world.

just a little cafe next to a&w at one utama new wing, it offers wonderfully delicious desserts of waffles, crepes and pancakes. sure you can go to the much posh 'paddington pancake' cafe for many more choices, but for a cheaper plate of pancakes, go to waffle world.

the place were almost empty when we came, much to our delight. the waiters were friendly, and even the outlet manager helped us make a choice.

not that he needed to help - i already knew what i wanted. fat waffles with banana, choc syrup and vanilla ice-cream!

my kahfi

khaleef and kahfi waited in high anticipation. khaleef is a real sweet-tooth and ice-cream freak, while kahfi eats anything. hihi.

my khaleef

here there are not only sweet waffles, but savory ones as well. i've never tried any of these sandwiches - made of waffles stacked on one another with salmon or turkey in between. sounds like a treat?

haven't i said enough about my hot waffles with the ice-cream and banana? that's what i ordered! i chose the 'banana waffles', while mr. khairul went further up and ordered 'banana walnut', which was basically similar to what i ordered, but with an added walnut spread on top.

...and here's my banana waffles! gemuk kan, waffle dia?

waffle may appear smaller than actual size!

that's what i really like about waffle world. the waffle is not only filling because of its size, but the texture is really wonderful - soft interior with lil bit of crispiness lining the sides. incredible, especially when you add cool vanilla ice-cream to that mouthful of hot waffle shreds. throw in a couple of banana bites, and you're in waffle heaven! hihi.

just perfect.

..and here's mr. khairul's waffle. with walnut! he also ordered this strawberry smoothies. a nice drink to complement the awesome dessert!

strawberry smoothie

open wide, kahfi!

step into waffle world today - one utama, 2nd floor at the new wing, right next to a&w. man, writing this made me wanna go there right now and have a plate of warm waffles!

check out these postings too!
