Pirate Adventure Maths Day @ Kahfi’s School

i applaud the school’s initiative to create fun themes when they organize english day or science day – and the did a good job having a pirate-themed maths day at school. i can see the kids totally enjoyed dressing up like pirates, holding their own treasure box with stuff inside to count!

IMG_9308

my little pirate kahfi. the pants has holes on the knees, so i just cut them off, and cut frills below the pants to give him the tattered pirate look! tie up my pashmina around his waist and voila! captain jack ‘kahfi’ sparrow! left the eye patch and parrot on the shoulder though!

IMG_9304IMG_9306

i made him his treasure box, and printed out a few ‘money’ and also threw in some gold candy wrappers! looks authentic la kan haha.

  IMG_9332

i brought kazim along as the maths activities can certainly appeal to him too. there were many ‘stations’ all around the school, and each station addressed different types of maths problem – add and subtract, counting, puzzles and money transactions. i love it! parents can guide the children to various stations and play along with them. so no particular station was ever crowded and every activities went smoothly.

 IMG_9340 IMG_9336

owh the boys had fun with this one – making pizza! count the number of pepperoni (red), cheese (yellow) or veggie (green) that you need, and then use glue to stick them on your pizza! (what’’s the blue color for i wonder?)

IMG_9344 IMG_9345

‘how many legs do two beetles have?’ is just one of the many questions printed on a laminated card on the table. most stations have these cards that students can read by themselves and try to figure out. it’s fun!

 IMG_9360

how many beads do you need for a 20cm string?

 IMG_9368 IMG_9371

there was a puzzle station too. time yourself and see how fast you can complete the puzzle! kazim loves puzzle and he’s quite fast. he can concentrate well and just do the job. kahfi…haha kahfi is a bit impatient when it comes to puzzle. once stumped and unable to find a fitting piece he would just call it a day!

 IMG_9375

‘how long did you take to finish the puzzle?’ and even a sand timer is set on the table to keep you on your toes!

 IMG_9378

do you wanna make a pirate hat? kids learn to follow instructions, step by step.

 IMG_9382

my little pirates. kazim was not too happy with his pirate hat because it’s just made of folded newspaper. haha.

 IMG_9388

the end of pirate adventure maths day. we had fun! next maths day, lets do a business theme for kids dress up in little suit and tie, and three-piece suits for the girls. gonna be adorable!

Pajama Party & Storytelling @ Kahfi’s School

every year the school organized a storytelling session, and the kids come to school in their pajamas. adorable! cant get any cuter than that? it can! they were also asked to bring a favorite plush toy. so kahfi brought his favorite stuffed toy, those monster fly-buddies we get complimentary when we fly emirates.

(yes, kahfi, if you’re reading this when you’re 20, you once HAD a favorite fluffy toy. he was yellow and weird looking, and you call him puppet. once kazim spilled milk on it, you were upset and asked mak to wash it. i just threw it in the washing machine – its faced was splat against the clear washing machine lid, and looked really creepy. haha. and yes, you sleep with that yellow, pink-nosed puppet. true story.)

kahfi wore his favorite buzz lightyear pajamas and his favorite fly-buddy.

the teachers collaborate and staged a cute, simple story of the gingerbread man. there were a lot of repetitive lines from the story so that when the kids do it, they can easily memorize the lines. after the kids had their turn trying out the short play, it was the parents’ turn! most parents were reluctant – ye lah, mesti la malu-malu sikit, takkan nak melompat terus kan haha. however, i always tell khaleef and kahfi to participate actively in class – put up your hand, ask questions, be the first to answer, be part of the conversation – so i immediately volunteered, to prove my point. get in there, moms! get involved, dads!

walk the talk!

..and so i was the moo cow. mooooo~ hihi

parents can also enjoy the stories. naturally, most of them busy snapping photos. haha.

   IMG_8560

this is a fun initiative by the school because 1) the kids can enjoy an evening of story-telling, 2) they can watch their teachers in a lighter environment acting out the story of gingerbread man, 3) they have fun with friends in a more casual setting, and later act of the gingerbread man together, and of course 4) parents had the chance to goof off and put a smile on the children’s faces when it’s the moms and dads’ turn to act!

also, there was a fee to join this storytelling session, and all the proceeds go to charity. kudos to the school!

‘Oxford Reading Tree Day’ : Kahfi’s Fun at the Beach

it’s literary week at the boys’ school – first there was the ‘character day parade’, and the day after, kahfi’s batch had their ‘oxford reading tree day’ where the kids enact their favorite scene from the oxford reading tree books.

IMG_4417

kahfi my beach boy!

kahfi was given written instructions to come to school wearing a floral shirt, shorts, sunglasses, a hat and slippers. and the girls come in their summer dresses. super cute!

there was a mock beach outside in the school yard, complete with a tent, picnic mat, huge umbrellas and few large tyres in the ground, with beach sand put in the hole. what a fantastic idea for the kids to have ‘fun at the beach’ without leaving the school!

IMG_4409

this is the shell station I presumed. there were a lot of shells here that kids can dig up and the teacher asked the kids to count them, add or subtract using the shells. kids have fun AND learn too.

IMG_4415

IMG_4397

there’s even a tent put up!

IMG_4418

I appreciate the school’s effort to make learning more interesting and fun with these activities. the mock beach idea is great! the kids can explore many stations that has been set up, and they get to enjoy beach activities like collecting seashells, play pretend with the picnic basket full of fruits and veggies; in a safe environment, along with their friends and teachers.

at kahfi’s age, kids need a lot of simulations to learn better, and be more interested in learning – not just for the sake of learning, but experiencing new things; or same things in new ways. an outdoor activity in school like this will certainly boost their interest. well done, school.

I look forward for more fun activities like this!

‘Character Day Parade’ 2014 : The Amazing Spideys

khaleef had his first ‘character day parade’ in 2011, and he came as a dashing king. fast-forward to 2014, it’s kahfi’s turn to experience his first ‘character day parade’, and he insisted on wearing his spiderman hoodie and nothing else. no princely crown, no buzz lightyear, no other costume.

he wants to be spiderman.

elder brother khaleef followed suit, and came as spiderman too. if only I had the make-up for a face-mask. that would be super awesome.

(click here to see what khaleef looks like wearing a crown as king khaleef!)

if you don’t see any other pictures of khaleef, it’s because I’ve decided to spend more time in kahfi’s class and joined their activities – after all, it’s kahfi’s first. his classmates were all SO adorable! there’s supergirl, a monkey, red riding hood, winnie the pooh and lots of princesses in pink tutus.

IMG_4210

here I was about to do a story-telling session with kahfi’s class. since my costume was ‘princess elsa’ in frozen (ok, fine I didn’t have an actual COSTUME, I just had a pair of gloves! duuh...the gloves that else wore? haha) so for my storytelling, I just told them the tale of ‘king midas and his magic touch’. hey I didn’t know that I was supposed to tell a story! so that’s the one that came to me on top of my head haha. hope they enjoyed it!

IMG_4386

this girl is a cutie. they were holding hands the whole time. hihi. my kahfi & laera. sigh. I remember when khaleef was this age, he had a crush too. also filipino. haha. sama taste je dua beradik ni. dah besa sok jangan berebut gopren sudah!

IMG_4223IMG_4227

the girls are too adorable!

IMG_4228IMG_4230IMG_4232IMG_4233IMG_4234IMG_4235

these are some of the interesting ones I’ve managed to capture. kings and queens, pirates, cowboys, lots of snow whites, batman and barney; and even mike wazowski!

IMG_4389

the amazing spideys!

IMG_4243

kazim is going through the spongebob-phase right now so he was ecstatic to see a life-size spongebob!

IMG_4251

that’s kahfi getting up close and personal with spongebob! I applaud the school’s effort to cheer up the kids by hiring these famous characters – spongebob, barney, bugs bunny, hello kitty and the whole disney gang – mickey, minnie, donald, pluto and goofy!

IMG_4263IMG_4266

kahfi with bugs bunny and donald duck!
