Silk Ribbon Embroidery

There is a wonderful tutorial for silk ribbon delphiniums on Carol Daisy from Carol Steemson.
This would look fantastic on a crazy quilt!

And here's another silk ribbon beauty made by Danielle Roothooft featured on Stitchin Fingers.

Spiral Quilt and Modern Crazy Quilt

"Solaris" by Christel Pietschmann was featured on Lisa O'Neill's blog: A Thread from the Edge. The quilt was on exhibit at the Pennsylvania Quilt Extravaganza. Thanks for the info, Elle!

Another quilt from the same show featured on Lisa's blog is "Jacob's Coat" by Marcia DeCamp from Palmyra, New York. I love how she made it in 4 big squares.

Crazy Quilt Embroidery Inspiration

If you're interested in crazy quilt embellishment ideas, take a look at Pamela Kellogg's blog: Kitty and Me Designs, and the home of Crazy Quilt Quarterly Magazine. Pamela lives in Illinois.
I like how she incorporated that vintage photo above. And the piled buttons, and the dangling rows of beads. Not too perfect, yet not haphazard either. It's graceful.

Isn't it funny that in 1860 many people thought that crazy quilting was just a temporary fad, but here we are on the eve on 2015 and we're still loving these luxurious collages. So much for the fad idea!

Merry Christmas Eve!

Crazy Quilt Close Up

Vintage Crazy Quilt, detail, photo by Allie Aller. This quilt is from the collection of Kaffe Fassett.
I like that border. Imagine how this quilt would look loaded with embellishments! How about some tiny black seed beads and silk ribbon embroidery?

Crazy Quilt with Corner Fans

I made this crazy quilt with silk fans in the corners about 10 years ago. My Mom crocheted the little white fan in the photo below. She made it for this quilt. She also taught me how to embroider about 50 years ago, and I'm so glad she did. I love to embroider on quilts. Beads make it nice to run your hands over the surface of the quilt too. You know what I'm going to say: click here to see how to make fans.

Crazy Quilts to Write Home About

This amazing crazy quilt with the circular fan in the middle was featured by Kerri Murphy of California on her blog: Crazy Stitcher. She has lots of eye candy there for crazy quilt lovers (like the close-up below).

This stunning crazy quilt (above) was made by Stewart West in 1883. It now resides in the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. It was featured by CQ Magazine Online

Two Crazy Quilts at the American Folk Art Museum

These two star quilts are part of the "Super Star" Exhibit at the American Folk Art Museum. The quilt above was made by Mary Ann Crocker Hinman of New York State, 1880-1890. According to the info tag, this crazy quilt emphasizes piecing rather than embroidery. Well yes, but look at that embroidery below! This quilt is truly impressive in person.

This contained stars crazy quilt was made in Barnstead, New Hampshire (that's where my brother lives!) by a member of the McAllister family in 1885-1920. This quilt has a huge variety of fabrics and embroidery stitches. Notice how the 9 stars are not lined up like a Type-A person would do it? I like that; it adds charm. I also like the gold embroidery along the outer edge. I feel a crazy quilt coming on, don't you?

NYC - Part 5, My Crazy Quilt

This is my crazy quilt that I shared at Show-n-Tell at the Empirre Quilters guild meeting. You'll see more of this quilt in a new website for quilters that I will be telling you about soon. The quilt was made from silk and cotton fabrics; it's machine pieced, and hand embroidered and beaded. (The butterflies are part of the purchased brocade fabric.) I love the fans in the corners.

NYC - Part 6

I found this checkered button in London years ago at Mark's and Spencer. I knew it would someday come in handy!
My Mom crocheted this pretty little fan. She just made it up as she went along!

I love this little roller skate charm. To cover up the stitches that attach the charm to the quilt, I piled up some black beads. This looks nice, I think.
