PolyPediaOnline News | FREE polymer clay “billowed-screened” tutorial & Greece 2015 classes

New FREE polymer clay tutorial - "Billowed-Screened" technique project!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Being a part of Polyforms' contributing designers group, I have been called for an exciting technique to be released on the net.
The only one request was: “Please work with Sculpey III clay.”
Being a newcomer with this particular brand of clay (never dealt with it prior to this project) I instantly began working with it, examining its qualities.
Silk screens are also fresh to me. From the time I received my test set from Polyform, my fingertips were tickling to check these out.
Soon after a couple of tries, a brand new project was created mixing the two - silk screens and Sculpey III clay -
An attractive kitchen utensil holder.
This particular project could be modified into countless additional purposes - different holders (studio equipment, cosmetics brushes) as well as big statement jewellery, for example bracelets!
The full tutorial is available on Sculpey website -
Ahoy Czech Republic! | Building Skyscrapers and seeing the INKredible; 2 days of polymer clay goodness!
When my son was young, he used to play tennis.
He was sitting next to the TV screen and updated me on any new rising star in the world, winning tennis awards.
One of these stars was Martina Navratilova from Czech Republic. She was statistically the second best female player of the 20th century behind Steffi Graf. My son knew it all. "Mom", he said, "Czech Republic is somewhere where champions come from, we must see it".
When I met the beautiful Czech Eva Susanska in Frankfurt, while demonstrating in the Creative World fair for Staedtler and later we met on Nuremberg when I gave the Brocade purses class in Staedtler's factory, we agreed that Czech Republic should be one of my future destinations.
The Czech Republic artists are slowly discovering polymer clay as a crafting medium and artists begin to emerge, seeking for advanced knowledge and higher education in polymer clay. It was the perfect timing.
Eva immediately scheduled a master class and the last weekend was the finale of those plans, 2 handsome hostesses (Eva and her husband), 2 days of wonderful weather, a beautiful country, intelligent and super professional students, good food, beer(!) and...of course, polymer clay.
After hearing so many good things about Czech Republic in general and Prague in particular, I had to visit and see all.
My other half joined me for a short 3 days trip and we toured the city left to right, top to bottom, on Segway, on foot, it was wonderful.
Second stop was Pilsen with Eva, her husband, Ladislav, as a devoted assistant and the lovely students.
I know I am repeating myself a bit, I taught the same subjects in Switzerland (INKredible and Skyscraper techniques) but for me, every teaching experience feels like a new baby being born, the discovering of new ways to use polymer (I always learn something new from my students!), the birth of a new bead, the happiness on a student's face revealing a secret, it is all so exciting even after 1000 classes.
Amazing how each and every student takes a technique to his own colors, design and style and create a completely different piece than mine.
You can see below some of the wonderful creations made by Czech Republic ladies, including some nice tricks to use on your Pearlex jars - they used a round baked clay sample (half white half black) to tell which Pearlex color is inside the jar and how it looks on the baked clay.
Why didn't I think of that?
Last day was dedicated to tourists attractions - underground historical medieval tunnels, (an amazing experience), a visit in Pilsner Urqell beer brewery and a visit in the Jewish Synagogue.
I want to send a HUGE thank you to Eva Susanska and her husband Ladislav for such a warm and pleasant welcome and stay, it was a pleasure to stay, teach, chat and hang out with you two and our wonderful students, I feel so blessed to have these opportunities - thank you!
I had a fantastic time and will definitely come to Czech Republic for more!
Another thank you for Monika Tyna Brydova for taking some of the photos posted above :)
Additional pictures (98 to be exact) are published in my Facebook account, you are welcome to drop by.
Short summary to a wonderful trip - Switzerland-Liechtenstein Classes, June 2013
Teaching in general (and teaching a group of polymer clay ladies and man in Switzerland in particular) is such a rewarding experience.
When teaching a class, I feel as much of a participant in the learning process as I am responsible for presenting the content effectively. A wonderful feeling.
For me, it is important to make sure the students have a good understanding of the material and technique, supplying them with both a toolkit of ideas and class projects, and also, I want my students to become thinkers, active and use the technique and idea to go to the next "what if" step, researching the possibilities beyond.
My Switzerland teaching trip was another proof that learning is mutual, fun and endless, no matter which language you speak.
It was wonderful.
On a nice sunny day, a group of dozens students gathered in the beautiful Liechtenstein, with landscape taken from fairy tales, both Melanie Muir and myself along with Sabine Backer as the ideal organizer, translator and host, spent wonderful 3 days of rock cuffs, skyscraper, INKredible and of course, perfect venue, clean fresh air and healthy appetite!
Look at those clean plates! :)
A visit in Zurich
Liechtenstein's view from the class
With 2 groups, each teacher was teaching two 1.5 days of classes.
I was giving my "INKredible polymer" class as a full day and the Skyscraper technique as a half day.
Students were each taking their own path in creating a design, one chose a round shape, other pointed, third created multi-beads creation - thinkers!
Working!
Some of the final pieces
There was one man in my class (only one! How come there are so few men in polymer clay?), Jean Nordmann, a very special person with a very special life mission. I will post about him and his precious humanitarian work in my next posts. Surrounded with lots of helpers he did a great job as well.
And how can we miss a Swiss tradition?
Sabine's sweetest daughter surprised us with a superb chocolate fondu!
The perfect end to a wonderful trip.
I wish to thank Sabine and to all my new and old friends for this wonderful opportunity to see the world, meet new friends I would have never met if it wasn't for polymer clay.
I cherish these moments and think of how small the world is and how happy I am that polymer clay brings us all closer together.
You are welcome to see more pictures from this event on my Facebook,
My next stop is Czech Republic at the end of August.
