Spooky Writing

I've joined up with my friends at A Classy Collaboration as part of the Trick or Freebie Blog Hop.
Harness the Halloween spirit in your room by giving your kiddos something to write about. Cut out the spooky cards and put in a brown paper bag. Glue the directions on the bag and you are ready to go!
Your little spooks draw two cards from the bag and use them to write a narrative.

I've included a graphic organizer to help them plan their stories and a rubric to help your assessment.

Spooky Place Value and Problem Solving -- Freebie!

We gave the Constructed Response Assessments in math yesterday. I tested a small group of students and realized they had trouble working the problems because they weren't able to transfer a math problem that was written horizontally to a vertical form and place all of the numbers in the correct place value.
This freebie is a simple way to practice adding and subtracting numbers, being sure to write the numbers in the correct place value position. Students pick two cards and use the numbers to write one addition and one subtraction problem. They must write the problem on their paper and solve it.

Just click on the picture above to get the freebie.

And on a not-so-spooky note, I just received word that I'm twenty-seven on the list of the Top Fifty Teacher Blogs published by Teacher Certification Degrees. Click on the pic below to visit their site and see the list.

Asking and Answering Questions - Freebie

When I was in sixth grade, our teacher gave us Social Studies homework every night. We had to read a chapter and write questions over what we read AND had to include the answers to the questions. She used the questions almost every day after lunch to play baseball to review what we read. And guess what? We knew the material!

Click on the pic above to get a sheet to give your students to encourage them to write good questions based on a seasonal book. They work with a partner and get the other child to answer the questions.
