As an act of Buddhist kindness, Basho once ingeniously reversed a cruel haiku made up by his witty disciple.
Kikaku had said:
A red firefly
Tear off its wings
A pepper.
Basho substituted:
A pepper
Give it wings
A red firefly.
Basho again:
I wish to pluck fresh green leaves to wipe away your tears

Andree,
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing your technical skill to this blog and adding all the poetry links and the bloggers to this site.--as well as all the other technical work you've done.
It certainly is a diverse, vibrant, and growing community. Thanks for making it so welcoming.
am i the only one to think that basho's 'ingenious reversal' is neither witty, nor ingenious? perhaps there's some nuance lost in the translation, but i'm calling this round for kikaku.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this site... :~)

I left two links this go-round, both with poetry, one with artwork by Andree in Vermont. Going ga ga. The point is, I wanted to haiku the heck out of this subject and get it out of my system, and for that I thank you. Come visit soon, everyone, or I will call down the forces of Ming on you!
