The Warm and Fuzzies

Sometimes I get a bit of a warm glow when I've finished a card.  Other times I think it's better suited for the bin and I am embarrassed to share it on my blog.

Thankfully today's card is one of the warm and fuzzy varieties and I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

It probably helped that I used my favourite colour, but the image was a new one for me and it was the first time I'd coloured her so anything could have happened!  The papers are also from my gorgeous Coffee in the Arbour set and I've used a floral die to frame the card.

The bad news is that the reason for making her is that it's the final EVER challenge at Top Tip Tuesday. The TTT challenge has been running for 5 years and I joined in 2011, although for the last year I've only been helping out in the background on the DT blog rather than providing samples for the challenges each fortnight. However, as it is our last ever challenge, for sentimental reasons, I've decided to play along with the theme, which is ribbons and pearls.

It couldn't be a more perfect theme for me!!

The Secret Diary of Barry Bear

Hubby bought me a mini binding machine about a year ago, and after making the calendar project that I had been itching to make, it's been in the cupboard collecting dust since then.  So I decided to pull it out and put it to use for this fortnight's challenge at Top Tip Tuesday where the theme is Stationery.

I've designed and printed out a full year of a diary, with a week's view to each page and bound it all into a mini book using some mount-board covers (I had some leftover mount-board from making my clocks).  I did actually put design paper on the front and back, but then stamped over it with some floral mini stamps to match the colour theme of the image, so you can't see much of the design any more.

I also tied little strips of matching ribbon around the rings, but wasn't sure whether I liked them after I'd done them.  I did end up pulling them off, but they were on when I took the photos.

I designed the diary insert pages to fit four weeks on an standard A4 sized sheet of paper.  I chopped the printed sheets into quarters and that's the size of the diary.  I cut the mount board slightly larger to create the covers.

This is also my final challenge designing for Top Tip Tuesday.  I've been on this fabulous team since June 2011 and have had a wonderful time with a great bunch of designers and our lovely leading lady, Samantha.  But I've been feeling in a bit of a rut for the past couple of months and decided I need to inject some change in order to get my mojo back.  I am addicted to crafting.  It's a much needed 'release' from a stressful day job so over the next month I'm stepping back from four of my longest running teams, hoping that will free up some time to enable me to go in search of my missing mojo by trying some new creative challenges.

Blondie Cupcakes

I've been testing out my 'blond' colouring again and quite like how this one turned out.  I think that the Tiddly Inks' Wryn is quite pretty as a blond too.  This card also incorporates another of my passions.  Cake!  Although I confess that my preference is eating it rather than baking it!.

This project is to support the challenge at Top Tip Tuesday where the theme is "Something Sweet".  With the cupcake in the image and on the papers, I hope that qualifies! :0)

I added some Wink of Stella to the cupcake icing which you can see in the next piccy.  Yummy.

The best laid plans ....

The theme at Top Tip Tuesday this fortnight is 'Material Girl' so I thought I'd make a baggie and stamp it with an image of a girl. (OK she's actually a fairy, but hopefully that counts!).

So I rummaged in my fabric scrap box and found some lovely ivory linen and some pink patterned fabric, just large enough to make a small tote.

I'll let you into a little secret; I'm a teensy bit impatient when it comes to measuring.  But it does help that I seem to have quite a good eye for sizing.  So never mind the ruler.  I folded both pieces of fabric in half and cut out a rectangle roughly the size I wanted the bag (allowing a smidgeon more for seam allowances).

I stitched the sides of each piece together, and then thought I'd be clever and make the bottom flat, so I sewed across the corners to make a base on both pieces.

So far, so good!

I then made two handles from strips of the leftover pink I'd used for the lining, and it was ready to assemble.

Past experience tells me that the assembly is where I usually get things wrong, so I thought I'd be extra careful and assemble the pieces the right way round, pin them, then turn them inside out to sew them all together on the wrong side.

Clever girl, good thinking!   ;0)

In went the pins to hold the lining in place, turned it inside out, popped in the handles and stitched around the top leaving a small gap to turn it inside out.

I admit that I was feeling rather smug as I turned it the right way out to admire it.  What could go wrong?

I'm absolutely delighted to confirm that I'd managed to get the lining inserted the right way, with all the messy seams hidden away on the inside.

Unfortunately, this is the point when I also discover that the handles are likewise hidden away on the inside.

Literally tucked inside the space between the lining and the outer fabric.

And to make it worse, I'd triple stitched the handles in place so they were attached nice and strongly.

D'oh!

So, when I'd finished unpicking 3 rows of stitching and restitching the handles on the right way, I stitched all around the top to seal the gap that I'd used to turn it, which also made the top seam lie flat.  I had originally intended to decorate it a bit more, but when I'd finished, I actually liked it as it was.

In theory the bag is reversible, but that would put my girlie on the inside, and she'd be hidden away.

So here's my baggie.  Not bad for a few leftover fabric scraps and a bit of trial and error (ok, more error than trial).

And because I flattened the base, it does stand up by itself, so it was quite easy to photograph.  :0)

I've not decided what I'm going to use it for yet, but rest assured, when I need it, I'll have mislaid it!

The image is lightly coloured with Derwent Coloursoft pencils as they don't run like inks do on the linen.

And finally here's a close up of the inside.

Magical

The challenge at Top Tip Tuesday this fortnight is fairies (or anything magical and mystical) so it's given me another opportunity to use one of my new LOTV fairies.  To be honest I don't need much excuse to use them, but I'll take anything that's offered!

I also used my favourite Nottingham border die, and this time also used one of the cut out flowers from it to pop in the bottom corner with a pearl centre to match.

Oranges and Lemons

Now orange and yellow are not my colours at all.  But this card kind of just happened that way! And I admit that I actually quite like it.

It is a summery kind of image, and once I'd coloured the mouse and grass, I pulled out some papers to choose what I wanted to use before I coloured the flowers something that might not match.  This paper just seemed to match the mouse, and I knew that I had some gold organza ribbon that would match which I teamed with some thin orange ribbon to create a band around the insert panel.

The gold organza was actually from a reel left over from my wedding invitations, so it's probably some of my oldest crafting stash because making my wedding invitations was my very first introduction to card-making nearly 10 years ago!

The new challenge at Top Tip Tuesday is to use 2 or more ribbons, which is covered as I've used 2 different style ribbons, and also created a double bow using a third piece of ribbon.

Barry Star Tags

I've been making some more tags for wrapping presents  I thought that I'd make these ones a bit more spring / summery themed, but I'm not sure I've got any yellow wrapping paper to match them!

I've painted the images with DI reinkers and added some Stardust gel pen around the edges.

This project is to support the challenge at Top Tip Tuesday where the theme is Shaped Cards.

Thank you

I wanted to make a clean and simple 'thank you' card for someone who (like me) likes purple.  I decided on my layout, and needed a wide ribbon.  But the ribbon I wanted to use was so sheer that the white butterflies on it didn't show up very well.   So I cut two strips of the ribbon, layered one on top of the other, and then lined up the layers so that the butterflies were in the same place on each layer.  Then I folded both layers around the card panel, sticking them on the back with tape.  The doubled-up ribbon made the purple appear darker, and therefore the white butterflies stood out more clearly.

I've also been trying to use my new Grungy Messages stamp set that I got from my visit to Leeds before Easter.  I've stamped a couple out, but each time I try them for size on a card, they seem too big, so I've had to leave them off.  This card has finally given me the opportunity to use one by making it centre stage.

This project is perfect to support the 'Monochrome' challenge at Top Tip Tuesday which starts today.

Bunny Hop

This little image seemed perfect to support the 'Here Comes Summer' challenge at Top Tip Tuesday which starts today.  It's one I've not inked up before but it was so simple to colour as I only used 3 colours!

I also managed to use a scrap of ribbon that I'd been keeping.  It wasn't quite long enough to create the long tails that I like, so I tied the bow and then wrapped the small tails around the image panel and stuck them at the back before sticking it onto my card with foam pads.

It's a date

I have a bit of a habit of buying cute boxes and other interesting items that 'one day I'll get around to decorating'.  Well I picked up a couple of these wooden calendars, and today is the day that the first one is being used.  (Well, the cupboard is getting a bit full of items, so I needed to take one out!).

I've actually not done that much though, just stamped an image onto the back panel, coloured it in with my markers, and then inked around the edges with an ink pad.  The wood was quite hard to colour on as the marker ink bled a little, but hopefully it looks ok.  This project seemed perfect to support the Numbers challenge at Top Tip Tuesday which starts today.

Mimi Easter

I don't usually send Easter cards, but wanted one for my mother-in-law, and couldn't resist this little cutie of Mimi from Stampfairy holding a little Easter chick.  Those bunny ears are just adorable!

This project is to support the Paper Piecing challenge at Top Tip Tuesday.  I've digitally paper pieced Mimi's dress, shoes, head band and hair scrunchies with the same Nitwits paper that I used on the card.

Mission Impossible

I'm on a mission to use some of the images which have never seen ink, before I indulge in any new ones.

I already know that I'm doomed to fail, but it makes me feel better to think that I might use a small fraction of my growing pile that haven't yet seen the light of day since they arrived on the doormat.

Today's theme at Top Tip Tuesday is 'cute' and this little sweetie from LOTV seemed to fit the bill perfectly, especially as I've not used it yet.

I've used LOTV papers, but they're actually scraps that were left over from other makes, so it's a thrifty card too.  They're such pretty papers though, that I'm not going to let any go to waste.

I've watercoloured the image with DI reinkers, and added a touch of shimmer with Stardust gel pens and some glossy accents on the stars.

C&S Bunny

As this project is to support the 'metal' challenge at Top Tip Tuesday, I had to pop on a little embellishment in the form of a heart charm, but otherwise, this is about as C&S as I can get, as it's almost a flat card.

Along with the lack of fuss, even the colour scheme is simple, and the charm uses the same pink monochromatic colour scheme as the rest of the card.

Snowy Trio

The new challenge at Top Tip Tuesday is 3, 5, 7 which I actually thought I would find quite difficult.  But when I put on my thinking cap, it wasn't too bad.

I used a lovely image from Purple Onion Designs, which included 3 snowmen (and 3 trees!) so that was the 3 covered.

I then realised that if I used one of my favourite shaped card bases, there are 6 pointy bits (technical term) on the base and I usually put a pearl on each one, so if I put one more pearl in a corner, that would be the 7 covered.

So I was just left with the 5.

Well, after thinking I could add 5 snowflakes, but then disregarding that because the image is quite large and I didn't think I could fit in 5 die cut snowflakes, I had a brainwave!

I used 5 Colours; red, green, blue, orange and brown.  Genius!!!  ;0)

I stamped the image twice, and fussy-cut out one set of the snowmen.  I then raised them up on foam pads to create more texture on an otherwise quite simple card.

Pink Fairy

It's a stitching theme at Top Tip Tuesday, which is right up my street!  I've actually done two types of stitching, because I've machine stitched around the banner panel, but I've also manually stitched on the button to the panel using the old fashioned needle and thread!

There is also a smidgeon of lace under the twine/button combo, but it's a little hard to see in the piccy.

I seem to be in a really C&S mode at the moment.  I'm sure that I'll be back in embellishment overload mode again soon, but while it lasts, I'll make the most of it. :0)

Girlie

I don't have many Tildas, but I realised that I've not used one for a while, so I thought I'd give one an inking.  I think this one's called 'Sweet Tilda', and I decided to opt for a fairly monochrome purple colour scheme.  The papers are a gorgeous shade from the Graphic 45 Secret Garden set, and they laid down the foundation for the rest of the card.  As there was a spot of green in the image, I added some pale green pearl accents and a little foliage behind my die cut flower.

I painted the image using DI reinkers but added some sparkly accent using a purple stardust gel pen.  I then outlined Tilda with a W1 Copic to lift her off the page a bit. (I tried to do it with my Pumice Stone DI, but it went a bit pinky when I tried to blend it, so I coloured over the top with the Copic instead).

The layers are all stitched onto purple bazzil card, and I used a little zigzag on one side to create a bit more interest.  This is something I've seen time and time again by the lovely Deanne, (here's my FAVOURITE card of hers which showcases the technique perfectly with the contrasting stitching).

This project is to support the Girlie challenge at Top Tip Tuesday which starts today.

A 'Fairy' Frequently Used Sketch

Today's card uses my most common sketch by far.  I think I might even be into double figures soon! :0)  I love it because it creates a lot of interest, with minimal effort, and only uses 2 sheets of 6x6 backing paper.

I usually stitch the panels, but was so busy getting sticky that I forgot today!

This project is to support the challenge at Top Tip Tuesday where the theme is to use your favourite sketch.  Well, it's safe to say that I've done that!!  And if you doubt me, check out this post!!

Purple Thank You

It's a Clean and Simple theme at Top Tip Tuesday this fortnight, and I've opted for my safe fall-back layout!

I'm sorry if you've seen it before (a few times), but for a C&S novice like me, it's what I feel most comfortable with.  And with this layout I don't start any OCD-induced twitching from the lack of embellishments.

I've premièred one of my new rubber acquisitions. When I saw some samples from the Purple Onion Designs blog, it didn't take long for me to give in and place an order with Michelle who runs the store.

Quite a few stamps managed to accidentally fall into my basket, and they arrived within a couple of weeks from across the pond.  They're slightly smaller than I'd expected, but they are gorgeous and stamp perfectly.  So in order that the image didn't look tiny on my usual 6" card bases, I've made a marginally smaller 5" base card for this one.  Luckily I've found a matching envelope for it.

Believe in the Magic

Woohoo, it's Christmas Eve, so only one more sleep to go!!!  At Top Tip Tuesday where we are having a huge Christmas Party for our final challenge of the year, and we want to see your Christmas projects.  Nice and easy, huh!

I seem to be on a bit of a Clean & Simple mood at the moment and they don't come much more C&S than today's card.  I've used a pretty snowflake digi paper from Bugaboo and a Sugar Nellie fairy image cut into a trimmed circle.  The sentiment is one I've typed myself in Word, in two different fonts, in different sizes, fitting the words into each other like a jigsaw.  I think the sentiment goes quite well with the sweet fairy image.  Apart from the fairy's hair, it's also a completely blue and aqua theme.

Mimi Snowflakes

The theme today at Top Tip Tuesday is Snowflakes (I love this theme!).  I've used a cute Mimi image from Stampfairy who are sponsoring us this fortnight.  They've also got a sale on so if you want any images, grab them while they're half price.

My snowflakes are a fab new die from Cottage Cutz.  It's really versatile, as it was not quite the right size circle, so I snipped the circle to make a gap, shaped it around my circle image panel, and then filled in the space that was left with flowers.  Simples!  :0)
