The lot on which the house was to be built was steeply sloped, and Thorne's challenge was to build the house there for the same price as a construction on a level site. He created a "space platform" and built the main areas of the house below the carport, avoiding significant excavation. The four-bedroom, two-bath home was a demonstration project for Bethlehem Steel Company and Twentieth Century Homes.
