unbend

I'm going to share our weekend at Devil's Lake with the Debbinks via photos, as a picture is worth a thousand words. It was a fabulous time--we had perfect weather and enjoyed exploring all kinds of activities at the state park. I haven't seen Chip this relaxed in a while, so that was a bonus as well.

I hadn't been to Devil's Lake in years!

approaching

Here are a few upcoming events:

1. Camping at Devil's Lake
Chip, Andy, Danielle, Gracie and I are going to enjoy the fall colors up at Devil's Lake Friday and Saturday. We're taking the kayaks and hoping to hike and bike. I haven't been there in ages, so it will be fun.

2. Korean Daisies blooming

3. Vacation in Napa Valley
Just in case you hadn't heard, Chip and I and two other couples are spending a few days in CA visiting wine country! It'll be a packed trip (so many activities planned), but we're all looking forward to it.

Last year, the Kordatzky family rented a cabin at Three Bears.

This year, we went a little bigger, and rented a Villa:

The week went waaaaay too quickly, though part of that may have been Chip and I joined the Faith Chapel canoe trip Saturday and Sunday morning on the Wisconsin River (our first overnight on a river with our kayaks), so we were exhausted on Sunday afternoon/evening (when my family all met at the campground/resort).

Some things were different (like cabin size (obviously) and free access to the indoor water park), but many things were the same. We again had more food than we could handle, though we did build in a meal made of leftovers, which helped use up several items. The pickle loaf (which is a horrible name for such a delicious sandwich) was devoured immediately, however, so there wasn't leftover of that.
We also still really enjoyed the outdoor water park called the Ranger Station, which has a nice lazy river (though no one did the basket dump this year).

The weather generally cooperated, with only one major thunderstorm rolling through Sunday night/Monday morning, disturbing much sleep. And we enjoyed completing a photo scavenger hunt throughout the three days we were there (Dad found the most flamingos). Oh--and the Marshes and the Bahrs met D for the first time, too!

We had a lot of desserts...

The Kordatzky family took a long weekend to hang out at the Jellystone campground in Warrens, WI, as it was a (mostly) central location that had reasonable rates for cabins that we could rent.

Of course, before we got there we didn't realize we'd be staying in a FEMA trailer...

"At least it's air conditioned!" became our mantra, as it was a hot and sticky weekend. We also were grateful not to be in tents when huge thunderstorms rolled through three or four times Saturday. Next year we plan to rent a slightly larger cabin so we aren't all on top of each other. It's a good thing we all like each other!

We took advantage of water activities many times over the course of the weekend, the Lazy River and Picnic Basket dump being the two main attractions.

We did a lot of our swimming at night (hence this picture looks dark), as it was less crowded then, but the area with the 'fun stuff' closed at 9 p.m.! We always had to book it after dinner because we found ourselves eating supper at 7 p.m.

The wave pool also was fun--even Brin really enjoyed the nearby water Mushroom and waves!

We also took a morning to visit a nearby county park that had a lake because Chip and I brought our kayaks! We let several people try them out:

(does this picture look slightly familiar to anyone?)

A few other activities: Mom and Dad toured the Cranberry Museum (we were in the town that has Cranberry Fest at the end of September, after all), Chip and Ruhama hiked to the top of Castle Rock at the county park, Ruhama and Gianna did the chicken dance in the kidney pool, one game of Carcassonne and one game of Seafarers, yummy food for all our meals, playgrounds and Carissa and Bryan took a trip down the big waterslide (right before the lightning started!).

We had sooo much food this weekend!

saturated sculling

Well, the annual canoe trip was this past weekend, and Chip and I have now done our first bit of camping as a married couple! Our tent came in the mail a couple of weeks ago (L.L. Bean) and we found our two-person tent to be a snug, waterproof deal. How did we discover it's wonderful water-repellant capabilities?

Why, because it thunder stormed at 4 a.m. on Sunday!

But let's back up to Saturday first. We all met at Faith Chapel at 5 a.m. to head up to the Sauk City/Mazomanie area, where we launched on the Wisconsin River. This year, Chip and I borrowed some kayaks to cruise downstream, and despite the extra energy that takes, I really enjoyed it! I look forward to having our own and being able to go out and paddle and explore more rivers and lakes.

At this point, the weather was nearly perfect--a bit overcast, but that meant less sunburn! We all paddled for a couple hours and then stopped for lunch and a swim. Then it was off to find a sandbar on which to camp. Once there, everyone unloaded canoes and set up camp, including the fire and 'kitchen'. We all started to relax: a little more swimming, some snacking and setting up the grill to make brats and hotdogs for supper. I discovered I was really, really tired, so shortly after it got dark, I went to bed.

And woke up to rain and thunder and lightning! It kept raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining and raining...

We cut our experience short--skipping church and lunch--to pack up and head back. That was sad, but the wetness was getting unbearable! As soon as everything was packed up and ready to go, the rain stopped (Murphy's law), though it remained cloudy all the way back.

All in all, it was a good trip, and like many of the others I was on, there was some adventure with the weather!

I apologize for the quality of the pictures, but it was rainy and it was a waterproof camera...
