redux

So I got to see more baby goats this week.

My friend Laura owns and operates her own business, Nature's Niche, thus has the need for goats to make her goat milk products! She invited several families from church out for a morning of exploring the farm. So, we braved the cold and rain, and had some fun:

tastee

I had a FrosTop rootbeer today.

It was amazing.

The taste completely took me back to childhood and the local drive-in, which was a FrosTop. I didn't expect that flavor to be so distinct, but man, I totally remember their root beer with just one drink.

And they made their hamburgers in a way we had never experienced before: it was crumbled beef piled on the bun (versus a patty). I must say, though, we didn't eat there too often, as they had code violations quite often. But the root beer was always safe.

Unfortunately, that area is now occupied by an AutoZone. My favorite doughnut joint from that spot is gone, too.

kids

I took a long weekend to visit my brother and family, as tax season keeps Chip at work for long hours and I get sad when he doesn't come home until late. While there, we dashed over to Gianna's brother's farm to visit the baby goats!

Born just two days previously, they were extremely adorable and M really wanted to take one home.

There were a couple that were a little older and were prone to jumping. This meant that D had to constantly reprimand one of the goats who really wanted to be up (even if it wasn't jumping on him--and apparently I didn't capture D getting bombarded--D would try to stop the goat).

No, baby goat, no!

I didn't mind the jumping quite as much, as you can see from my jeans...

There were also baby turkeys and lots of ducks. And pigs. And chickens. And a couple of dogs. All-in-all, a beautiful day on the farm!

Edited to add Gianna's blog post about the event!

legacy

Remember when I teased you about a family heirloom?

Wonder no more, as I've got pictures and the story about the dentist cabinet! Here's the backstory (per my mom):
The cabinet belonged to Grandma Louise Pittman. It was her sewing / thread cabinet. Grandma did a lot of sewing. I recall my mother talking about the dresses Grandma made Mom and Ellen Joy during the Great Depression. I assume that she made all of their school dresses, even with Grandpa being the manager of Thatcher Glass Co. I think she would add embroidery for decoration. Grandma was quite artistic. Grandma made some clothes for us children and always made them extra big so it could be let out and let down when we grew. Also, I remember that they would come to our house (we never went anywhere on vacation; COWS) for a week, probably every year. Grandma would use Mom's sewing machine and make slip covers for chairs and the couch. I remember Grandma having / using the cabinet when she lived at the farm in Hebron (1968-ish to 1972).
While I was growing up, it lived in my dad's workshop, so it got really dusty and a bit dirty. Because I'm using it to hold paper, I needed to clean it out and also wanted to make it pretty. I cleaned up the drawers first.

Then I cleaned and stripped the top of the main part of the cabinet. Once that was cleared, I stained the top and then moved it downstairs to my craft room. Knobs were reattached, glass panels reinserted and now it's half full of paper!
