Millions of Floridians miss Bush Speech
Millions of Floridians miss Bush Speech
Is this a sign from God?
Hurricane Frances barrels toward Zell who reaped the whirlwind
First things first...
Fuggetabbadit!!!!!!!!
NOTES ON BUSH SPEECH
Bla bla bla...I know nice people.
Lies about Medicare and Medical benefits.
Lies about releasing energy with tax relief.
"Nothing will hold us back" is the tagline so far.
Hyperbole about terror not happening on his watch.
More compassionate conservative bullshit.
Lies about offering clear and steady leadership.
He looks like he is on drugs.
Lies about expanding liberty in an expanding circle.
Imperialism.
"We will extend the frontiers of freedom"...meaning look out world, we are coming to take over.
Workers...suck it up.
Threatens to take away social security, etc. Old Europe, as it were.
Licking business' ass.
Reduce regulation.
Make tax relief permanent.
Bla bla bla
Stealing Kerry's idea about empowerment zones.
Bla bla bla
Sticking it to lawyers.
Plagiarized Al Gore line about doctors and patients having say so instead of:
BUSH: Government
GORE: HMOs.
"Ownership Society."
[see: Cain means Ownership]
Empty promise to America's schools.
Local people in charge of their schools.
Screw the moderates.
I'm reminded of what David Ogilvy once said:
YOU CAN'T BORE SOMEONE INTO BUYING YOUR PRODUCT...
What else is on...
MAJOR DISRUPTION!!!!!
ABC MISSES IT!!!!
ANOTHER DISRUPTION!!
PBS seems more reliable in coverage.
Bla bla bla...lies about Kerry and coalition.
Get this boring man out of my white house!
Sorry, but this man really sucks.
What was his name?
God damn what a long speech...
Freedom indeed!

Sneak Preview: Kerry Gonna Come At the Witching Hour
From Washington Irving's "Legend of Sleepy Hollow"-
...every sound of nature, at that witching hour, fluttered his excited imagination...the moan of the whip-poor-will from the hillside, the boding cry of the tree toad, that harbinger of storm, the dreary hooting of the screech owl, to the sudden rustling in the thicket of birds frightened from their roost.....
...to the cheers of hundreds at the Ohio Midnight rally!
Here's a sneak preview of what John Kerry will be saying:

Here's a sneak preview of what John Kerry will be saying:
"The Vice President even called me unfit for office last night. I guess I'll leave it up to the voters whether five deferments makes someone more qualified to defend this nation than two tours of duty."
"Let me tell you what I think makes someone unfit for duty. Misleading our nation into war in Iraq makes you unfit to lead this nation. Doing nothing while this nation loses millions of jobs makes you unfit to lead this nation. Letting 45 million Americans go without healthcare makes you unfit to lead this nation...."

Tommy Franks Was Not Endorsing Bush August 9th
It must have been an awfully tough decision for retired General Tommy Franks.
On August 9th, he said that the Swift Boat Liars' criticism of John Kerry's war record was political hyperbole and Kerry is "absolutely" qualified to be commander-in- chief.
Tonight, about three weeks later, he said America must make a choice.
He decided on Bush.
I respect him and trust that he's been independent and thoughtful about that decision.
I think about another general...Colin Powell.
As a key civilian Cabinet member, he was poorly used by the Bushites.
Tommy Franks left his command of the Iraq invasion mid-stream to retire.
I don't blame him a bit. He's done a wonderful service for this country.
Colin Powell's not coming back if there's a 'next term'. He tried to do a wonderful job for this country for these past four years, but the power-struggle among the Bushites made him politically impotent. What a damned shame.
The way I see it, both of the generals got out before it all comes down on top of the Bushites....the culmination of failed policy.
I don't think we've seen the worst of it yet. If the Bushites pull out a win, each and every failure can be covered by Karl Rove for only so long.

Ohio to NYC: A Day in the Life
Ohio to NYC
A Day in the Life
31 Aug., 2004
By Todd J. Schneider
Todd J. Schneider is a political activist from the Akron, Ohio area.
Not only is he a heartful activist, T.J.S. is also a gifted writer.
Let him tell you about A Day in the Life of an Ohio Activist in NYC.
I had looked forward to this day for nearly a year. From the moment it was announced that the Bushite junta would exploit the good people of New York one more time in order to extract the last drop of political blood from their tragedy, I knew I would be on the streets there to stand against them.
You see, New York was once my home. It was long ago, and indeed a time of personal struggle and heartbreak for this author. But my love for this place was firmly and forever established. This is the capital of the world. It is a land of constant wonder. It is a place piled high with the things of the world, and as a natural-born internationalist, its ethnic diversity serves to enrich rather than frighten my Anglo-Saxon heritage. Though I lived there but a short while, and long ago, New York welcomes me any time I return. So, with this adoration for the Grand Dame of American cities, a loathing of fascism and an equal helping of fraternity with the disloyal opposition, the die was cast in a heartbeat. I would be going home again.
Looking back on the year. Looking forward to the next battle.
The last year has seemed a lifetime - with all the political battles to be fought, then the primaries and regrouping afterwards. There were protests to attend, media consolidation to be fought, picket lines to be manned. History seemed to be being made all around us here in Akron, Ohio, and we lost no time in marshaling forces to face all the upcoming battles. My wife and friend of 28 years picked up the banner like never before, and our 14 year old had come into his own as a real political force in his own right. We formed a terrific independent group of Democrats back in February to work for the legal removal of our despised leader, and hundreds of friendships were made and a like number of dollars exchanged toward that goal. But all the sudden, it was late July and time for planning what we hoped would be the bloodless battle of defiance over the exploitation of New York City by the Republican Party, and whatever it is they claim to stand for.
We have a wonderful chapter of the American Friends Service Committee here in Akron that serves the downtrodden of the world every day. With them, I became involved in the committee to plan our part in the defiance; my part being to make sure our posse got in and out of New York without a hitch - or as close to that as possible. Any reader of this humble script who has done the 'battle by bus' thing in the anti-war movement knows the story. A parking lot in the middle of the night; the signing of the passenger list and the taking of cell phone numbers. The 8 hour bus ride and the impossibility of sleep. The half hour stops at the truck stop for fuel, food, a smoke and some anti-fascist talk. On this count, nothing would be very different.
On the way
This time there were other elements that made this trip unique. First, the response was overwhelming. In the last 7 of these trips, I had never seen such an early and enthusiastic desire to be counted. We ended up taking 3 buses from Akron and Cleveland - split fifty-fifty from each town, and sadly had to turn people away. Another element was the gymnastics routine performed by the Bloomberg/Rove administration - a routine worthy of the olympics, and designed purely to brace up the charade that nobody opposes this administration.
We really had no idea what awaited us in New York, right up to the very last moment. But the most important element for me was personal. I would be taking my our 14 year-old son Eric (his second such trip), and our 22 year-old son Andy would be taking the Chinatown to Chinatown down from Boston to yell some shit at republicans with his little brother and his old man. Though there was to be some chance of danger, this was a moment in history that I didn't want my boys to miss.
A memory a family will forever share in praise of love for their country
No words can ever express the value of this half-day we spent together. We marched together, laughed, talked about the city's part in our family's history over two centuries, and stepped on soil where our ancestors trod.
When it came time to part, there was the hug from me to my son in the tunnel of the PATH station at 14th & 6th Ave. that said 'I love you, be careful, and I will miss you'. If you know love, you know this moment - the hope, the pain of parting. These are memories never forgotten, and are the stuff that makes the world right.
By the grace of God, and the good work of UFPJ, the protest was a total and peaceful success. We returned to Akron at 2:30 am Monday morning, having left only 2 people from our bus behind. One of the buses stayed in New Jersey to wait for them, and hopefully achieved that goal. For me, it was 'back to work' at 7 am for 9 hours in the machine shop; for others it was classes at Akron U and Kent State. But it was also more. It was another act of defiance with new friends and old. It was a chance for me to stand against the exploitation of my home of long ago. It was a family memory to last forever. It was the day in the life of a family, a city, and a country.

Which America Does Bush Represent?
Which America Does Bush Represent?
One. And it's not my America.
He's never represented me.
I've paid close attention.
On NPR today, I heard Bill Frist talking about John Kerry's "flip-flopping" in the context of "two Americas".
Frist begged the question: Does John Kerry really see two Americas and is he trying to say he will represent them both?
The way I see it, the answer is simple.
John Kerry probably does see a division in America, although the "two-America" subject was primarily showcased in John Edwards' primary speeches; not John Kerry's.
If any reader here doesn't understand the nation is polarized, then I'm sorry. You must be brain-dead.
There's a 'moderate America' and the 'Dittohead/Fox News America'.
There is the top-1% "Haves"-in-America and the "Have-nots"-in-America.
Of course, there are many in the (squeezed) middle class who might tell you they can see three Americas.
Although he recognizes the polarization, Kerry will try to represent all of us as one America, unlike the radical agenda Bush has tried to push down the throats of middle-class America for the benefit of his mammonite "base".
Arnold Schwarzenegger, who ideologically represents something vastly different than the right-wing agenda for which the Bush administration has stood, said in his RNC speech that our soldiers are fighting for one America.
Arnold was right and I apprerciate him for stating the fact.
"We are one America."
John Kerry will represent America as one.
Goerge W. Bush has divided us and dwelled on only one of those Americas we all clearly see.
Who do these Republicasn think they're fooling?
I heard the shameless Bush on Rush Limbaugh's radio show the other day. That is Bush's element, you see. Dubya doesn't know how to talk to "the other America", and I don't think he cares to talk to them.
Bush only cares politically about the fundamentalists, right-wingnuts, and the top 1%, no matter how many Americas you care to count.

Zell-Out: White Trasher Hyperbole Dispelled
Zell doesn't let the facts get in his way when
he wantonly trashes his fellow Veteran, Party Member, and Senator.
Indulge Us A Moment of Factual Truth Before You Decide.
ZIG ZAG ZELL--TRASH VS. Truth
While U.S. Senator Zell Miller has signaled his support for George Bush, the facts are Miller and Kerry have the exact same record when it comes to defending the nation and Miller even called Kerry an "Authentic American Hero" who has "Worked to Strengthen Our Military."
"I've been going to Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinners in Georgia since the 1950s, so I've seen a lot of speeches," says Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.), easily the Senate Democrat most supportive of the Bush agenda. "Kerry's was by far the best speech I have ever heard given at a function like that. He talked about citizen-soldiers and he talked about the flag raisers at Iwo Jima. It was a very good, touching speech." (Salon, Aug. 10, 2001)
FACT: Zell Miller Lauded John Kerry as an Authentic American Hero
"My job tonight is an easy one: to present to you one of this nation's authentic heroes, one of this party's best-known and greatest leaders -- and a good friend. He was once a lieutenant governor - but he didn't stay in that office 16 years, like someone else I know. It just took two years before the people of Massachusetts moved him into the United States Senate in 1984." -- U.S. Senator Zell Miller (Remarks to the Democratic Party of Georgia Jefferson Jackson Dinner 2001)
ZELL'S TRASH: "This is the man who wants to be the Commander in Chief of our U.S. Armed Forces? U.S. forces armed with what? Spitballs?"
KERRY REALITY: Zell Miller Said John Kerry Worked to Strengthen Our Military; Fought for Balanced Budgets
"In his 16 years in the Senate, John Kerry has fought against government waste and worked hard to bring some accountability to Washington. Early in his Senate career in 1986, John signed on to the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Deficit Reduction Bill, and he fought for balanced budgets before it was considered politically correct for Democrats to do so. John has worked to strengthen our military, reform public education, boost the economy and protect the environment." -- U.S. Senator Zell Miller (Remarks to the Democratic Party of Georgia Jefferson Jackson Dinner 2001)
KERRY REALITY: John Kerry & Zell Miller Have Supported the EXACT Same Amount of Intelligence Funding
Kerry & Miller Have Supported the Exact Same Intelligence Funding in the Senate -- Since joining the Senate in 2000, Zell Miller and John Kerry have supported the exact same funding levels for America's Intelligence agencies. John Kerry served on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence for 6 years and is the former Vice Chairman of the Committee. Kerry joined the Committee in early 1993 and served until early 2001. Zell Miller has not served on the Intelligence Committee, Armed Services Committee or the Foreign Relations Committee in his four years in the Senate.
FY04 Intel Authorization (2003, Unanimous Senate Voice Vote 11/21/03)
FY03 Intel Authorization (2002, Unanimous Senate Voice Vote 09/25/02)

FY01 Intel Authorization (2000, Unanimous Senate Voice Vote 12/06/00)
KERRY REALITY: John Kerry & Zell Miller Have Both Supported Increases in Defense Funding -- including the Largest since the 1980's
John Kerry & Zell Miller are Both Strong Supporters of America's Military & Voted for the "Largest Increase in Defense Spending Since the Early 1980's" -- John Kerry and Zell Miller are strong supporters of the U.S. Armed Services and has consistently worked to ensure the military has the best equipment and training possible. In 2002, John Kerry & Zell Miller voted for a large increase in the defense budget. This increase provided more than $355 billion for the Defense Department for 2003, an increase of $21 billion over 2002. This measure includes $71.5 billion for procurement programs such as $4 billion for the Air Force's F-22 fighter jets, $3.5 billion for the Joint Strike Fighter and $279.3 million for an E-8C Joint Stars (JSTARS) aircraft. Kerry's vote also funded a 4.1 percent pay increase for military personnel, $160 million for the B-1 Bomber Defense System Upgrade, $1.5 billion for a new attack submarine, more than $630 million for Army and Navy variants of the Blackhawk helicopter, $3.2 billion for additional C-17 transports, $900 million for R&D of the Comanche helicopter and more than $800 million for Trident Submarine conversion. The current chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, John Warner (R-Va.) stated:
"The defense spending increase for FY03 is the largest increase in defense spending since the early 1980's-reflecting the importance of defending the homeland and winning the global war against terrorism. The funding included in this bill will help to ensure that our military has the tools it needs to defend our nation." (2002, Senate Roll Call Vote No. 239; Websites of U.S. Senators Warner, Daschle, Dodd accessed 7/25/03)

ZELL'S TRASH: "Senator Kerry has made it clear that he would use military force only if approved by the United Nations."
KERRY REALITY: "When the president says we have the same position on Iraq, I have to respectfully disagree. Our differences couldn’t be plainer. And I have set them out consistently. When it comes to Iraq, it’s not that I would have done one thing differently, I would’ve done almost everything differently. I would’ve given the inspectors the time they needed to do the job. I would have built a strong, broad coalition of our allies around the world.
And, if there’s one thing I learned from my service, I would never have gone to war without a plan to win the peace." John Kerry--Sept 1, 2004
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ZELL'S TRASH: "Twenty years of votes can tell you much more about a man than twenty weeks of campaign rhetoric."
KERRY (AND EVERYONE'S) REALITY: I think it's only fair to look back at the speaker Zell Miller and use his standard of judgement. This is the same Zell Miller who said 40 years ago that President Lyndon Johnson had sold his soul when he signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ZELL'S TRASH: "Never in the history of the world has any soldier sacrificed more for the freedom and liberty of total strangers than the American soldier. And, our soldiers don't just give freedom abroad, they preserve it for us here at home.
For it has been said so truthfully that it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech."
KERRY (AND THE SOLDIER'S) REALITY: Soldiers in Iraq have been gagged from the freedom for which they fight, risk all, and die.
Example One: CB's My War Blog *have a good time reading nothing
Example Two: Live From Iraq *have a good time reading nothing.
These are the men and women whose voices tell us the bitter truth.
They are silenced.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ZELL'S TRASH: No one should dare to even think about being the Commander in Chief of this country if he doesn't believe with all his heart that our soldiers are liberators abroad and defenders of freedom at home.
KERRY REALITY: "I want to be clear: As president, I will always remember that America’s security begins and ends with the soldier, sailor, airman, Marine and Coastguardsmen -- with every man and every woman in our armed services who has ever stood guard at the gates of freedom. Today, I salute each and every one of you for your commitment, strength and extraordinary courage." Kerry in speech to American Legion 9-1-04
Sad State of Mainstream Media
The Sad State of
the Mainstream Media:
Osama Doesn't Vote,
But If He Did..
These questions, as posed by Sam Rosenfeld, reminded me of my own headline from July (which was featured in the LA Times):
Let’s speculate: If you were bin Laden, and you had enjoyed a year and a half respite from America’s full, undivided attention, as special ops forces, intelligence operatives, and spy satellites were diverted from the pursuit of al-Qaeda to the invasion of Iraq, for which candidate might you feel the most gratitude? If you were bin Laden, and had watched the United States turn its invasion of Iraq into a cause célèbre for Islamic terrorists worldwide, which candidate might you deem the most useful and effective as a recruiting tool for your organization? [LINK]
Sam is pointing out that the right-wing mouth machine has been in such swift motion that the mainstream media (who have fully-albeit-unofficially cooperated with the Bush campaign with their old-school methods of gathering the loose "facts") is poisonous to the public's trust. The media turns lies into headlines without taking the time to investigate for truth.
If that sounds confusing, I'm not sure what to tell you. I see the mainstream media trying to keep up with the likes of Matt Drudge and some others in blogdom.
Let's have a reality check. What I am writing here is opinion. What Matt Drudge chooses to put on his site and the headlines he chooses to accompany his stories is biased. He will be the first one to tell you that.
I don't blame Matt Drudge or "news" outlets and blogs that are clearly and heavily biased. Much of the time, their news is not any more reliable than a gossip's brand of "news". I expect serious media to rise above the level of gossip and to intelligently discriminate. Too many times and to the detriment of a healthy democracy built on truth, the media has failed us.
Mainstream media is breeding a nation of complete dunces by feeding them sensational breaking news which has been found on these heavily biased sites and masquerading as "truth".
Among people on the intellectual side and the ones who simply value common sense, the mainstream media is quickly losing credibility.
What is American journalism turning out to be?
All propaganda all the time.
Fair and balanced propaganda.
Always two sides to a story weighed evenly, even when one side is clearly a lie.
Giving credibility to the lie creates conventional wisdom.
The fact that 67% of people polled back before the Iraq war believed that
al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein were in cahoots occurred because of a misinformation campaign led by our president and especially by Dick Cheney (who still lies about it insistently in absence of fact).
It was chimed resoundingly (and often) in the media until it became conventional wisdom to the unquestioning among us.
It's profoundly sad that the media, themselves, were among the unquestioning.
This is not a new story.
I've been preaching about it since I started this Blog almost two years ago.
the Mainstream Media:
Osama Doesn't Vote,
But If He Did..
These questions, as posed by Sam Rosenfeld, reminded me of my own headline from July (which was featured in the LA Times):
Let’s speculate: If you were bin Laden, and you had enjoyed a year and a half respite from America’s full, undivided attention, as special ops forces, intelligence operatives, and spy satellites were diverted from the pursuit of al-Qaeda to the invasion of Iraq, for which candidate might you feel the most gratitude? If you were bin Laden, and had watched the United States turn its invasion of Iraq into a cause célèbre for Islamic terrorists worldwide, which candidate might you deem the most useful and effective as a recruiting tool for your organization? Sam is pointing out that the right-wing mouth machine has been in such swift motion that the mainstream media (who have fully-albeit-unofficially cooperated with the Bush campaign with their old-school methods of gathering the loose "facts") is poisonous to the public's trust. The media turns lies into headlines without taking the time to investigate for truth.
If that sounds confusing, I'm not sure what to tell you. I see the mainstream media trying to keep up with the likes of Matt Drudge and some others in blogdom.
Let's have a reality check. What I am writing here is opinion. What Matt Drudge chooses to put on his site and the headlines he chooses to accompany his stories is biased. He will be the first one to tell you that.
Laughing About War-RNC Disgrace
Laughing About War-RNC Disgrace
Dick Cheney and the delegates at the RNC made me sick last night when Cheney made a joke about the war in which our nation is engaged and for which soldiers continue to die. While I listened to the guffaws after Cheney mocked Kerry's use of the word "sensitive", I thought about a soldier facing fire in Najaf or Mosul.
It's serious business.
Surely nothing to laugh about.
I saw Bush make a mockery of the war when he joked about finding WMD under his desk in the Oval Office.
This "girlie-man" verbal diarrhea rings hollow when you look at cold, hard reality.
Some things are really not funny.
