Skywatch Friday: Some roofs on Market Street

On the left is moza, a curry/kebab takeaway next to which is Cat's Cake Emporium and The Old Bakehouse Bistro.

On the right are the offices of two estate agents "Taylor & Wood" and "Reeds Rains".

Want to see the shop fronts? Check the original wider view on Geograph.

Hyde Town Hall Clock Tower

A couple of weeks ago I posted about the clock faces on Hyde Town Hall being removed for cleaning.

The ones on the side have been replaced but now the hands on the front face have been removed for restoration.

No doubt they'll be back soon.

St George's Roofspace

12 months ago St George's Church was having a new roof fitted - see a photo of the work on Hyde DP Xtra.

For a photograph of the new roof from the outside see our post from November 2013.

Yesterday was a Heritage Open Day and I managed to climb up the steep stone steps into the "ringing room". Access to the roof space is normally covered up but I was kindly allowed to take a look through and this is how it looks.

Other photographs of the ringing room and some of the church memorials and displays will have to wait for another day.

Reflections at Mocha Joe's

The tables at Mocha Joe's in Clarendon Square Shopping Centre provide a reflection of the roof of the mall and the sky above.

For a direct view of the roof see my post of 22nd August 2014.

For a taller view showing Mocha Joe's as well as the reflection see Geograph.

Clarendon Mall: Looking Up

The ceiling of the Clarendon Square Shopping Centre. The sky is visible through the glass panels which reflect the crossbeams whilst at the same time the sun casts shadows on the walls.

Orange sky over Gee Cross

Looking out over the rooftops of houses towards Werneth Low Road and the Hare & Hounds. The setting sun is spreading an orange light over the chimney-tops in the foreground and the clouds in the background.

The view across Hyde Central

Looking across the platforms at Hyde Central Station.

Behind the fencing are the roofs of houses on Station Close.

The white building beyond is the Asda superstore.

In the distance are the war memorial on Werneth Low and the communication masts on Idle Hill.

St George's New Roof

When I visited St George's for the Heritage Open Day in September work was being carried out to lay a new roof.

Now it is completed.

Compare the scene now with the one printed on the front of a Whit Friday programme in 1927 on Old Hyde.

Details of the early history of St George's can be found at The Annals of Hyde: St George's Church

Houses on the corner of Alice Street

A group of four cottages on Stockport Road, Gee Cross.

At one time these would have all looked the same and there would have been more houses along Alice Street. The latter street is now little more than a car park.

Over the years these properties have been improved with a variety of changes. Two have added front porches, one has a small bay window, others have double-glazing and one even has solar panels in the roof.

As the Alice Street side elevation shows, they may have small frontages but they extend backwards a good way.

Mowing the grass at St George's

At one point in its history many of the gravestones in St George's churchyard were laid flat and the area nearest the church grassed over.

The grave to the right of the tree on the left (midway between the one in the foreground and the groundsman's machine) is the neglected grave of John Chritchley Prince - see my post of 18th September.

The sides of the church currently fenced off with steel while the roof is refurbished.

ABC Wednesday: R is for Roofs

The roofs of textile factories viewed from the Clarendon viaduct.

I believe these were originally dye works but what work still goes on here, I'm not at all sure.

Skywatch Friday: Hyde Town Hall from Hyde Central Station

To the left of the Town Hall are the high rise flats, John Grundy House and Chartist House. A large leylandii tree on Cross Street seems to dwarf the larger buildings.

See the tree from the opposite direction on Hyde DP Xtra.

Skyview Friday: Pigeon over the Town Hall

I took a photo of the market last week and it wasn't till I downloaded it that I noticed the pigeon flying over the Town Hall.

It is carrying something in its beak but I can't decide what. As I was using my phone-camera this is the best close-up I can get.

The uncropped original can be viewed on Hyde DP Xtra.

Here the yellow canopy is now going back up again.
