Shadow Shot Sunday: A560 Gateway shadows

Entering Hyde along the A560 from Stockport are some huge raised metal signs which were erected at boundaries all around the Greater Manchester area at the time of the millennium. When the sun is strong in the evening their shadows are cast across the road.

Scenic Weekend in Black and White: Grazing land at Broomstairs

Land on the south side of Manchester Road used for grazing when not flooded.

Wilson Brook flows between the trees on the left and meets the river Tame which flows behind the stables on the right.

For a coloured view see the original photograph on Geograph.

Signs approaching Broomstairs Bridge

A few yards further along Manchester Road from the view posted on Tuesday are these road signs.

Broomstair bridge over the river Tame was originally the boundary between Hyde, Cheshire and Denton, Lancashire. Now both towns are part of Tameside Metropolitan Borough.

Beyond the boundary sign are two warning road signs. One refers to horses which is not surprising as there is a stables on the left hand side and a bridleway on the opposite side of the road.

The other sign warns of cattle!

Geese by the River Tame

These Canada geese were by the side of the river Tame in the Jet Amber Fields area between Kingston and St Anne's Haughton.

Dozens more of them were grazing in the fields and trees nearby - see Hyde DP Xtra.

ABC Wednesday: B is for Big Tree

The original "Big Tree", which stood by the Diamond Row reservoir almost opposite Clough Gate, traditionally marked the boundary between Hyde and Gee Cross. Later on the reservoir was covered and the nearby Diamond Row cottages were demolished, to create an open space.

In 1983 a new "big tree" was planted at the corner of Lilly Street and Stockport Road as a memorial to sacrifices made in Northern Ireland and the Falklands.

See how it looked in 1983 on Old Hyde.

Junction Street Triangle

Junction Street coming from Hyde North Station divides here as it reaches the A627. Left leads to Dukinfield Road and Hyde. Right leads to Victoria Road and Ashton under Lyne. On the other side of the main road beyond the tree-lined grassy triangle of ground lies the Village Hotel.

Welcome to Hyde - 8 Years of Daily Photos

Sign and bus-stop on the A627 at the boundary between Dukinfield and Hyde.

Compare this with the how the sign looked on 8th April 2008 when Hyde Daily Photo was celebrating its 2nd anniversary.

Hyde Daily Photo opened with a photograph of Hyde Market on 8th April 2006.

After 5 years it went into archive mode and Hyde Daily Photo Volume 2 opened on 31st March 2011.

Volume 1 consists of 1819 posts and this is the 1047th post on Volume 2.

Additionally there are 224 posts on Old Hyde and 466 posts on Hyde DP Xtra.

That's 3556 posts in 8 years.

Broomstair Bridge Valve House

The A57 road from Manchester to Hyde crossing Broomstair Bridge over the river Tame. The building on the right is a "Valve House" belonging, originally, to Manchester Corporation Waterworks. The pipeline crossing in a girder bridge on the south side is part of the aqueduct carrying water from Woodhead to Manchester. Read more about the system on Old Hyde

Broomstair Bridge Boundary Signs

The river Tame forms the boundary between Cheshire and Lancashire and the division is clearly carved on the parapet stones of Broomstair Bridge.

The word "Township" is clearly made out but the names of the townships of Hyde and Denton are hardly discernible. Whether simply worn down or filled in I wouldn't know.

Weekend reflections in the River Tame in Black & White.

Taken from Lovers Lane across the river Tame to Jet Amber Fields. The river is the boundary between Hyde (Cheshire) and Denton (Lancashire) although both now come under the local authority known as Tameside Metropolitan Borough.

Low bridge sign

Last Friday I posted a view of Dukinfield Road.

Here today is a closer view of the low bridge warning sign. The bridge in question is the one by Hyde North Station which you can see in an old post from May 2008.

In the background, between the sign and the belisha beacon, is the sign for the Village Hotel.

Welcome to springtime in Hyde

Welcome to Hyde it says on the sign, but spring is here at last and the leaves on the trees have grown and obscure the message.

See how the sign looked in April 2008 before the council added an extra sign advertising advertising space.

ABC Wednesday: T is for Township Boundary Stone

In the middle of Gee Cross village is a stone marking the boundary between the townships of Hyde and Werneth.

I am not certain when it was erected nor whether this is its original location.

ABC Wednesday: J is for Johnsonbrook Road

Johnsonbrook Road leads from Hyde North railway station up to its junction here with Ashton Road and Birch Lane.

Once a hive of heavy industry it is now for the most part a rough cobbled road apart from this end.

The new houses are over the boundary in Dukinfield.
