Fire in a flat on Market Street
Last week I heard first via twitter that there was a fire on Market Street between the Bus Station and the Town Hall.
Later reports said it was in a flat above a pharmacy, but there are three pharmacies in that long row of shops and it didn't say which.
I was down next day and it seems that the fire was not above Lloyd's pharmacy but the Top Flight dry cleaners next door, who appeared to be still open for business.
I understand no-one was hurt but it had caused huge traffic disruption.

Godley Arches and Steps
Yesterday's photograph of the entrance to Godley Reservoir was taken from the bus stop across the road.
Turn round 90 degrees and this is the view we see.
The arches carry the Glossop to Manchester railway line over the A57. Godley station lies to the right and the entrance to the Glossop-bound platform is up the steps behind the fence. The entrance to the Manchester-bound platform is on the other side of the arches.

Simple Intelligent Parking
This is the Contractual Notice at the SIP car park off Beeley Street. The car park used to be controlled by Tameside MBC but this section now comes under the control of "Simple Intelligent Parking". The problem for some motorists though is that the adjacent car park on the other side of Beeley Street is still council-run. Some people have been parking on one side but getting their tickets from the wrong machine and have then ended up being fined, which seems neither intelligent nor simple.
The sign above the notice warns that even blue badge holders now have to pay for parking in disabled spaces.
See the sign that was there in April 2011.

ABC Wednesday: K is for Kerry Way
Kerry Way is a newly constructed road off the A57 Mottram Road to service the Kerry Foods factory. Previously HGVs had to negotiate the narrow Godley Hill Road to access the factory.

Waiting to be demolished
When I posted a photograph of Clarendon Square Multi-storey car park in March 2013 I remarked that it was rumoured it was going to be demolished.
Well the rumours were right and it is now all fenced off and waiting to be demolished.

Not a Charity Shop
Although this whitewashed building at the corner of Norfolk Street and Reynold Street looks as if it is an extension to the Tameside Animal Shelter shop across the street, it is in fact an independent commercial second-hand shop stocked by items from house clearances.

Looking down Green Street
When these red-brick terraced houses were built their residents would have mostly worked within walking distance. Nowadays almost all of these homeowners will also own a car leading to vehicles parked on both sides.

Dappled shadows across Swains Valley
The sun was shining across Swains Valley the other week and from a distance I thought I could see some spring bulbs shooting up but on a closer inspection the damp ground was still strewn with the dropped leaves of autumn.

The Weekend in Black & White: Sunset over Kirkley Street
The tower of St George's church peeps over the end of Kirkley Street. The sun is setting behind the trees on the left. The streak in the sky is a jet vapour contrail.

Major Roadworks - Delays Likely
More of Market Street is being resurfaced again. This section is by the junction with Union Street which has been closed off.
There is single lane traffic controlled by traffic lights and the delays are considerable.
If you look closely where the old tarmac has been gouged out you can see the former tramlines that have been buried.
Three more photographs of the work can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.
