The new style of No Smoking signs now specifically refer to E-cigarettes.

The alternatives may be popular with several shops in town promoting them, but the majority of places seem to find them equally objectionable.

ABC Wednesday: G is for Golden Charmers

Saw these golden charmers for sale on the market last week. I don't have a garden nor green fingers so didn't make a purchase. I presume they'll go golden when the flowers bloom.

Mottram Road near Longlands Lodge

This view down Mottram Road is in the opposite direction to the one posted on 3rd February.

Just down the road on the left is the end of Pudding Lane.

On the right in the woods is Longlands Lodge. At one time there used to be a school in the woods but it has long gone and the whole area is now privately owned.

Umbrella on the Trans Pennine Trail

When I was out the other week photographing first the blue sky over Swains Valley and then the flooded duckboards in Gower Hey Woods, followed by the steps out of the woods and before I recorded the clouds over the Trans Pennine Trail I discovered this umbrella stuck into the ground under the Dowson Road bridge. Knott Fold bridge can be seen in the distance.

Weekend Reflections in Black & White: Gower Hey Woods

Our part of the UK has suffered nothing in comparison with other areas but we have had some minor flooding.

Blue sky over Swains Valley

After a morning of heavy rain, a week last Tuesday, a bright sun emerged in the late afternoon bringing blue skies.

A couple of hours later after the sun had set this whole scene was white over with snow, although it had mostly thawed by the morning.

Since then there has been a lot more rain but no snow.

Behind the trees is Enfield Court, a McCarthy & Stone built block of retirement apartments.

Pedestrian Zone

Last week I posted the sign on John Street - Pedestrian Zone Ends - but I rather suspect it confused a number of my transatlantic visitors as there "jaywalking" as they call it is not allowed. Here in the UK you can walk on the road if you want to, but traffic has priority so you need to take care.

Here in Hamnett Street is the start of the pedestrian zone through Market Place into John Street.

The sign says "no vehicles" but then there is the caveat - "except for access" - so it's allowed for cars to drop people off at the shops and the pub, but pedestrians have priority so drivers have to go slowly and look out for people.

The bottom sign means - no parking - but as you can see it's often ignored.

ABC Wednessay: F is for former Frames Billiards and Snooker Hall.

The Frames billiards and snooker club on Mount Street has been closed for several years. The "for sale" sign advertises it as an industrial/leisure opportunity but also suggests that residential use might be possible, which may make the site more attractive to potential purchasers.

Outside the Town Hall, the 330 bus from Stockport to Ashton is waiting to turn right at the traffic lights.

This is a new shop that has recently opened up at the end of Borough Arcade.

If you want some blue jeans or yellow reflective jackets this might be the place to look.

Occupying the former Oddfellows public house on Ridling Lane is the Muhammadiyah House of Wisdom.

It describes itself as a centre for purification of body, mind, heart & soul.

Clouds over the Trans Pennine Trail

Earlier this week we had had a morning of heavy rain. In the afternoon the sun came out and I took walk down on the Trans Pennine Trail. Before long the dark threatening clouds returned. A couple of hours later after sunset the ground was covered in a layer of snow. By the morning though it had all thawed.

Pedestrian Zone Ends

The section of John Street behind the camera is a pedestrianised zone although a lot of traffic visiting the Royal Mail Sorting office continue up Hamnett Street and down John Street. The hanging flower baskets on the right are on the side of the Wetherspoon's pub The Cotton Bale.

ABC Wednesday: E is for Edge Clothing

The edge clothing store in Clarendon Square Shopping Centre seem to have a sale on at the moment.

I'm not sure whether it is an independent store, part of a chain or a franchise. An internet search seems to find similar stores in various towns but no head company apart from one in Australia.

The new Barratt houses at the corner of Pudding Lane and Bridestowe Avenue have been given the name "Pudding Fold".

Money Shop pawnbrokers

Between Pound bakery and the entrance to the toilets in Clarendon Square Shopping Centre is the Money Shop pawnbrokers. It is one of several such businesses that have opened up in Hyde and almost every other town in the UK over recent years.

In 2010 the shop was Dr Herbs and in 2006 it was Beijing Herbs. Before that it had been an opticians.

Shadows across the old gift shop

Although it was very cold a week ago there was a strong sun shining which cast shadows on the hair salon and the old Clarendon Gift Shop which used to have some lovely antiques for sale but sadly has been closed now for several years.

This dense wood, through which flows the Godley Brook, lies on the north side of Mottram Road, Godley opposite the bottom of Viners Way.

Reflections down Garside Street

Although it is raining heavily now, this photograph dates back a couple of months from when water was streaming down Garside Street and overtaking the drains.

But our wee problems are nothing compared to what is happening in other parts of the UK where storms have wreaked considerable havoc.

Inside the bus station are signs to assist passengers to find the right bus to their destination.

ABC Wednesday: D is for Debra

Of all the many charity shops in Hyde, the Debra shop in Clarendon Mall is one of the most spacious. We pop in most times we are passing and enjoy chatting with their friendly staff.

Debra is the national charity working on behalf of people in the UK with the genetic skin blistering condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). It has over 100 shops across the UK.

One-stop shop on Hattersley Road West

With new Barratt houses having been built across the road, the previously run-down and mainly abandoned shops have been replaced a new convenience store, a post office, a betting shop and a chip shop. One unit still remains to be let.

Woodland for sale

The A57, Mottram Road, past Longlands. The houses, built 2012, are at the bottom of Viners Way which is part of a new Barratt development off Pudding Lane.

Next to the two joggers is a sign indicating that the last parcel of woodland between Mottram Road and Pudding Lane is also for sale with planning permission for five dwellings.

Bench shadows on Hyde Civic Square

It was very cold and quiet on Hyde Market the first Saturday in February but the strong morning sun shone across creating sharp shadows.

Last year I also showed you the shadow of one of these benches on a cold Saturday in Februrary.
